UEBE 1323 Building Services Tutorial 2, Flow Rate Calculation

1) A factory requires water distribution pipes to supply 20 water closets, 24 wash basins, and 4 sinks. The total loading units is calculated to be 128. The required flow rate is about 1.5 liters/sec. 2) For a 6m copper pipe with 1 elbow and 1 tee, the permissible head loss is calculated to be 0.176 meters/meter for a 28mm pipe and 0.192 meters/meter for a 22mm pipe. The 22mm pipe can supply 0.42 liters/sec and is most suitable. 3) For a 15m copper pipe with 4 elbows requiring 1.8 liters/sec flow, a 35mm pipe with permissible head

1) Determine the design flow rate for a cold water distributing pipe supplying 20 W.

C , 24
Wash basin and 4 sinks in a factory/ (Refer to industrial building) loading for sink is 4
20WC x 2 = 40
24 Wash basin x 3 = 72
4 Sinks x 4 = 16 Loading units
20x2+24x3+4x4 = 128 loading units
The flow rate required for 128 loading units would be about 1.5 liter/s
2) Calculate the permissible loss of the head per meter run of pipe and decide the most cost-
effective diameter of copper pipe when the copper cold water distributing pipe having an
actual length of 6m, with 1 elbow and 1 tee in the run is required to discharge 0.35 liter/s
under a constant head of water of 1.5m

(Assuming diameter used is 28 external , 26 internal diameter)

effective length = 6m + ( 1.0 + 1.5) = 8.5m
Permissible loss of head = 1.5/8.5m
= 0.176meter /meter run
Proposed pipe can supply flow rate of 1/s This is more cost effective.
(Assuming diameter used is 22 external , 20 internal diameter)
effective length = 6m + (0.8+1.0) = 7.8
Permissible loss of head = 1.5/7.8m
= 0.192 meter /meter run

Proposed pipe can supply 0.42 Liter/s , Therefore 22MM copper IS THE MOST
SUITABLE BECAUSE ITS ABLE TO PROVIDE A FLOWRATE OF 0.42 litre/s
approximately which higher than the required flow rate of 0.35 litre/s

3) Propose the most suitable size of pipe when a copper cold water distributing pipe having
an actual length of 15m, with 4 elbows in the run is required to dischardge 1.8 liter/s
under a constant head of water of 6m.

Assume 28mm external diameter, 26 mm internal diameter.

effective length = 15m + (4 x 1.0) = 19m
Permissible loss of head = 6/19m = 0.316 meter/meter run
Proposed pipe can only supply 1.5 liter/s and is lower than required. Therefore this pipe is
inappropriate
Assume 35mm external diameter, 32 mm internal diameter.
effective length = 15m + (4 x 1.4) = 20.6m
Permissible loss of head = 6/20.6m = 0.291 meter/meter run
Proposed pipe can supply 2.2 Liter/s and is higher than required. Therefore this pipe is
appropriate

4) A factory needs to be fitter with a water tank after going through a major renovation.
After the renovation. The area of factory has been increased to 2560m^2 which includes
100M2 office area. The office area has its own toilet. While the factory operation area is
housing 8 water closets in it centralized toilet. Decide on the most suitable water tank size
for this factory base on 24 hours emergency supply after the renovation. This factory
does not have a canteen and the number of staff in the factory is uncertain due to high
turnover/ The constraint here is, the office toilet and factory operation toilet are far apart.
Office and factory must have their own tank, Therefore there should be 2 tanks
Office = 100 x 1/10 = 10 persons
Factory = 30persons x 8 = 240 persons (Ignore if head count is provided in question)
Water storage calculation
Office = 40 x 10person = 400 liters (400 liter tank is proposed for office)
Factory = 40 x 240 person = 9600 litres (9600 liter tank is proposed for factory)
