Project Title:
A proposed title of the project
“Study of waste glass powder as partial replacement of cement in constructions"
Abstract/Summary:
Please provide some background about the project, company, situation and overall summary
as to the nature of problem and what is required, and what is the expected outcome of the
project (approx. 500 words)
One of the major environmental concerns in the world is the amount of waste materials
generated by various industrial sectors, Which is continuously increasing and causing
irrefutable environmental problems. It has been agreed that re-using waste is the best
available way to reduce the amount of solid wastes that may end up in disposal sites
with all the disastrous environmental consequences and economical loss generated.
Glass is one of these waste products and is unsustainable as this does not
decompose in the environment (non-biodegradable). On the other hand replacing
this hazardous waste with material with is contributing highest to Co2 emission in
the world will multiply its sustainability impacts.
Glass is majorly composed of amorphous silica which if it brought down to size of
micro-scale it can gives the properties similar to pozzolanic materials. Pozzolanic
materials are extensively being used as the supplementary Cementous Materials
(SCMs) in construction industry due their economy and sustainable environmental
effects. These materials includes Flyash, GGBS( slag), Silica fume, etc.
Waste glass powder is of the potential pozzolanic Material, however, has not
become commercially in use due to lack of experimental studies in term of its
performance as a supplementary material. Glass powder has not only potential of
SCMs but also can be a very good filler material. It can act as a compacting filler

material and strengthens the micro-structure of cement, which can be reflected by
the increase in compressive strength of concrete by test and also in theoretical
concept of Packing density of UHPC. The most evident and useful benefit of using
glass powder is the Resistance to chloride and other durability parameters.
Durability of glass powder replace cement is expected to be high because of low
permeability/conduction of charge. In the studies of previous researchers the results
of durability were very conclusive, however, their result of increase in strength and
workability reduction are not very conclusive.
Objective of this project is to find the various harden and plastic properties of
partially replaced cement with Glass powder at different replacements, like 10%,
15%, 25%, and 30% replacements. Project will be followed by the conduction of
respective tests i.e, cube compressive strength test for strength, slump for
workability, RCPT for durability parameters. Only after conduction of standard
testing we can conclude our study on the use, pros, cons and sustainability favours
of Glass powder replaced cement.
Brief background / Literature survey of the work, including sustainability and ethical
aspects?
These should be testable in some way.
Studies of previous researchers show that use of glass powder waste has successfully meets
the sustainability triple bottom line, which in terms of Co2 emission reduction, Use of non-
biodegradable material , Cost, better performance.
Objectives
List all objectives of the project. These should be measurable and will be used in part
assessment in determining the level of achievement of the project.
(Can be a breakdown of what you are trying to achieve and can be representative of
activities/ phases that are to be conducted in arriving at the project deliverables)
Objective of this project is to study the use and impact of waste glass Powder on the
performance of concrete. Which include:
Durability
Optimum dosage of replacement
Strength
Workability

Project Outcomes:
Provide a list of key outcomes of the conducted project (can be for each of the above
objectives/ stages) these can be studies, reports, recommendations etc
Outcomes will be the benefits and disadvantages of this waste Material in replacement of
cement. This project will have following outcomes.
service life prediction of concrete
sustainable of new material
improved harden properties
effects on fresh properties of concrete
Why are you interested in the project?
Provide a reason for your interest, what greater general interest it serves (In Industry or as
part of Research) and who it could benefit (the target audience(s) that this project would be
beneficial to)
Sustainability is the key reason for interest in this project. It not only reduces the
carbon foot print by reducing replacing with cement but also incorporating non-
degradable material for useful purpose. Use of this material will directly affect better
environmental and green- Earth progress. It is also beneficial for construction
contractors and companies due to better performance concrete with better cost
constraint.
What are the key questions the project attempts to answer?
These should be testable in some way.
This project will answer the following questions.
Either service life will be better or not?
How much sustainable it can be?
Do we get better strength with this replacement?
Do we need to use any kind of water reducer in combination of Glass powder?
