Lesson
A measure of central location/tendency is a single numerical value that
attempts to represents a data set by identifying the central position. There are three
commonly used measures of central tendency – mean, median, and mode.
The mean is the most stable and used measure of central tendency. This is
primarily because it takes into account each and every score in the distribution. While
the mean is the most stable measure of central tendency, it fails to serve the purpose
in the presence of outliers that distorts the mean and significantly influences the central
location of the distribution. In cases where these outliers, or scores extremely big/small
when compared to the rest in the data set, then the median is the more appropriate
measure of central location. The median score is the middle data value in the
distribution when the scores are arranged from lowest to highest. It is the score that is
greater than or equal to half the scores in the distribution and also less than or equal
to the other half of the scores in the distribution. The mode is the measure of central
tendency that is easiest to spot. It follows the concept of plurality and supports the idea
that the central position must be where the most scores are. While the mode is easiest
to spot, it is also the least used in terms of statistical treatment of data. Normally, it is
used when the purpose is to give an initial measure of central tendency, and when the
focus is plurality.

Q4Week No.6 Competency Code: M7SP-IVj-1, M7SP-IVj-2
Answer the following questions:
a. What is the mean, median, and mode of the active cases in Parañaque City as
of March 10, 2021?
b. What is the most appropriate measure of central tendency to use in the given
data? Why?
Solution:
a. Finding the mean, median and mode:
▪ To find the mean, add all the data values, then divide the sum by the number
of scores in the distribution.
82+11+11+21+28+12+39+6+35+41+26+15+26+31+19+37+1
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 = 17
441
𝑀𝑒𝑎𝑛 = = 25.94 = 𝟐𝟓
17
▪ Since there is an odd number of scores in the distribution, then the middle
score after the data values have been arranged in ascending order is the median.
Given data: 82, 11, 11, 21, 28, 12, 39, 6, 35, 41, 26, 15, 26, 31, 19, 37, 1
Arranged in ascending order:
1, 6, 11, 11, 12, 15, 19, 21, 𝟐𝟔, 26, 28, 31, 35, 37, 39, 41, 82
Thus, the median is 26.
▪ The mode is simply the score with the highest frequency.
1, 6, 𝟏𝟏, 𝟏𝟏, 12, 15, 19, 21, 𝟐𝟔, 𝟐𝟔, 28, 31, 35, 37, 39, 41, 82
Hence, the modes are 11 and 26.
b. The appropriate measure of central tendency to use is the median because
there is an outlier (82) which affects the value of the mean (25). Also,
there are two modes in the given data (11 and 26).

Drawing Conclusions from Tables and Graphs

Tables and graphs are two useful and effective ways of presenting data. They
are visual representations that organize information to show patterns and
relationships. A table is a set of facts and figures arranged in columns and rows. A
graph is a diagram or drawing that shows the relationship between changing things.
Common graphs used are line graph, bar graph, pictograph, pie graph, and histogram.
Example: Let us examine the table below and answer the questions that follow.
Pandemics and Epidemics in the Philippines before COVID-19
Pandemics and Epidemics Approximate Number of Deaths
SARS (2003) 2
Spanish flu (1918-1919) 85,000
H1N1 or Swine flu (2009-2010) 3
Source: https://thesmartlocal.com/philippines/pandemics/
1. What is the table all about?
2. Which of the pandemics and epidemics have the highest and least approximate
number of deaths?
3. What conclusion may be drawn from the table?
Solution:
1. The table is all about the pandemics and epidemics that occurred in the
Philippines before COVID-19.

Q4Week No.6 Competency Code: M7SP-IVj-1, M7SP-IVj-2
2. SARS has the least approximate number of deaths while the Spanish flu has
the highest approximate number of deaths.
3. It can be concluded from the table that among the pandemics and epidemics
that occurred in the Philippines before COVID-19, the Spanish flu is the
deadliest.

ACTIVITIES
ACTIVITY 1:
A. Determine the outlier/s in each set of data.

3. 88, 98, 93, 95, 189, 90, 95, 99, 91 4. 159, 167, 107, 161, 173, 163, 170

5. 21.3, 1.1, 14.3, 16.9, 22.2, 18.4, 20.5, 23.7, 17.9, 55.5

B. Tell what the most appropriate measure of average should be used to the following
situations.
1. most popular brand of soap 2. monthly income of a family
3. middle age from a group of teachers 4. favorite anime of students in
G6-Rizal
5. most frequent score in a Filipino summative test.
ACTIVITY 2:
A. Read the situation below. Decide on whether to use the mean, the median or the
mode. Justify your choice by explaining your answer in no less than two sentences.
Ellison is a manager of a tour company. Every time they have a tour, their
Diesel- powered bus is pumped in their first stop which is Quezon City. He
understands that it is impossible to always be going to the same gasoline station
because the tours also have different routes. Hence, in planning the budget, he
wants to have an idea of how much is per liter of gasoline in Quezon City. The
report from the Department of Energy for March 10, 2021 reflected the following
data:
Flying
Petron Shell Caltex Phoenix Unioil Seaoil PTT Independent
V
38.15 40.75 39.60 41.40 38.00 38.00 41.41 38.19 35.75
Data Source: https://www.doe.gov.ph/sites/default/files/pdf/price_watch/petro_ncr_2021-mar-11.pdf

If you were Ellison, what figure are you going to use in budgeting the cost (Do
not consider adding allowance as the Diesel is only one of the entries)? Why?
B. Look at the given graph below. Draw conclusions from it by answering the questions
that follow.
1. What is the graph all about?
2. How many parents preferred the radio-based
instruction for their children?
3. Which of the learning modalities are the least
and most preferred by the parents?
4. What conclusions may be drawn from the graph?
