(Template) Hmine 223 Assignment 1

This document contains two questions regarding mine ventilation assignments. Question 1 involves calculating the equivalent resistance of an airway network system and determining the airflow quantity through one of the airways. Question 2 involves drawing fan performance and efficiency curves based on test data, and using that information to determine the fan operating point, power, and efficiency if installed in a duct of given specifications. Students are instructed to submit their assignments as PDFs on Google Classroom by July 18, 2021. Late submissions without a good reason will result in reduced marks.

HMINE 223: MINE VENTILATION ASSIGNMENT 1

QUESTION 1
a) Nine airways are shown in the sketch below and these form part of a ventilation network.
An airflow quantity of 50m3/s intakes through airway 8 and is exhausted through airway
9.

(In the above sketch, airways are numbered and shown circled while airway resistances are
shown to two significant decimals in Ns2m-8)
i. Calculate the equivalent resistance of the system based on network analysis
technique. (10)
ii. Determine the airflow quantity through airway 7. (5)
b)

The pressure drop over the parallel airways A and B shown in Figure above is 900 Pa. The air
density is 1.15 kg/m3. Determine the size of regulator required to reduce the quantity of air
flowing in airway B to 60m3/s. (10)

QUESTION 2

The following figures were obtained from a fan test conducted on a direct driven axial flow
fan (results shown in the Table below):
 Fan speed: 13.5 r/s
 Air density: 1.012 kg/m
Figures were obtained from a fan test conducted on a direct driven axial flow fan:
Quantity (m3/sec) Pressure (Pa) Fan Input power (kW)
0 930 3.6
2 840 4.6
4 870 5.9
6 910 7.8
8 860 10.0
10 730 12.4
12 490 14.7
13 310 15.0
14 0 14.6

From these figures draw:

 A complete fan performance curve, including power and efficiency curves.
 Determine the fan operating point, input power and efficiency of this fan if it is to be
installed in 760 mm galvanised duct, 54 m long, having a friction factor of 0.0035
Ns2/m4 at a prevailing density of 1.012 kg/m3.
Tip: A real graph paper is required (25)
