Describe the sport of boxing. What do the boxers do? What are the rules and where does the sport
happen?
Boxing is a sport that has been around for thousands of years, becoming an official Olympic event in
688 B.C. There is even evidence of boxing occurring in ancient Egypt. Modern day sport boxing involves two
athletes punching each other with padded gloves, trying to knock their opponent down and out. These fights
usually last three to twelve rounds, with each round usually lasting three minutes.
Boxers find their own time table which leaves them in the best shape. Too much training
(over training) can be disastrous. Timing and reflex actions can be off. Then there's the making
weight side,coupled with the hydrating after the day before the fight weigh in. Fighters differ
drastically in their weight loss and gain procedures while keeping their bodies healthy.Protein and
diet are extremely important.
But the usual road work and regular exercises to loosen up before getting into the bags or
sparring. Sparring in training is nothing like the fight itself. But boxers use sparring differently,
depending on what type of style or orthodox, south paw opponent they are facing. Every training
camp is different from the sparring stand point,but most of the routine workouts are what they do
before or while in serious training.
Some boxers prefer to get away from the media and the city. Some like to train at high
altitude.
It also has a lot to do with what a boxer can afford to be around … trainer, environment and
equipment wise. Not all fighters are contenders with great coaches and facilities.
Rules of Boxing
There are several different rules that are followed in professional boxing. Some common ones include:
A referee much be present in the ring.
A boxer cannot wrestle or hug their opponent.
If a boxer gets knocked down, he must get up on his own with any assistance from other people.
Boxers are classified based on their weight (boxers only fight an opponent in the same weight class)
A boxer hanging helplessly on the ropes is considered knocked-down
A boxer cannot punch an opponent who is knocked down
Gloves must weight between 8-10 ounces in professional fights
A boxer cannot punch their opponent below the waist
