Critical Review On The Animation L'Ondée by David Coquard-Dassault

Flavia Ferrucci provides a positive critical review of the animated short film "L'Ondée" by David Coquard-Dassault. She compares it favorably to the 1929 documentary "Regen" by Joris Ivens, noting their similar techniques of using contrasting black and white cinematography without dialogue to illustrate the effects of relentless rain on everyday city life. Both directors make the rain the main protagonist, linking the places and times depicted. Overall, Ferrucci praises how Coquard-Dassault's delicate pencil drawings effectively set a melancholic and uncertain atmospheric mood through the medium of rain falling on an unnamed city.

Critical review on the animation L’Ondée

by David Coquard-Dassault

A sudden rain surprises the city: umbrellas are opened, the traffic intensifies,
people seek shelter when they can. A pencil-drawn picture to illustrate a relentless
storm that paralyzes the activities of the anonymous inhabitants of an unknown place. In
this meditative and dialogue-less short, the director manages to communicate a
melancholic and uncertain atmosphere with no aid from the spoken word: the shades of
black and white and the delicate trait of David Coquard – Dassault perfectly render the
grey mood of a rainy day.

In many ways, “L’Ondee” can be considered the modern and animated

equivalent of “Regen1”,  the 1929 documentary by Joris Ivens that illustrated the effects
that rain has on the everyday life of Amsterdam. The contrasted black and white, the
absence of dialogue, the static and fragmented shots of people and places under the
relentless Dutch rain can all be found in Coquard-Dassault’s short.

Both directors make the rain their main protagonist, not just a background voice,
and so it becomes a sort of ideal bridge that links two opposite places in history of
cinema and brings the two films together. The works also end in the same way, with the
return of hesitant rays of sunshine that accompany the slow rebirth of the city.

1) Even though a critic might express his or her opinion/ judgment on the work that
is being analyzed, a critical review must be well justified so that the
interpretation is credited by the audience. Overall, is Flavia Ferrucci’s review
positive or negative? How does she justify her opinion?

Answer: I couldn't see if her criticism was a positive or a negative one, she
talked more about the technical aspects of the movie but I think it was positive
because she talked only about the best and more unique parts of the movie.

2) Do you agree with her interpretation? Would you add anything?

Answer: I wouldn't add anything, I think she did great with her words even
comparing with some other movies, it shows that she really has the knowledge
of what she works with.

3) What does she say about the narrative elements (setting, character development
and plot) of L’ondee?

The setting of the movie is an ordinary city where during the rain, the rain itself
is the protagonist of the story showing how it affects the city and disappearing in
the end where now there is sunshine and a slow "rebirth" of the city.

4) Have a look at the adjectives underlined in the text. Choose three that you are

Grammar reference

Adjectives in English always come before the noun and sometimes there
can be two adjectives in a row, such as “a handsome young man”. In the
text above, the author used compound adjectives, such as “pencil-drawn
picture”, referring to the animation made of pencil drawings, and
“dialogue-less” short (mute).

Sometimes it’s possible to have three adjectives in front of a noun, but

this is unusual:

a nice handsome young man

a big black American car

that horrible big fierce dog

It is very unusual to have more than three adjectives, but it may

happen.

Adjectives usually come in this order:

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8

General opinion Specific opinion Size Shape Age Colour Nationality Material

Example:

● I love that really big old green antique car that always parked at the end
of the street.
● My sister adopted a beautiful big white bulldog.
