Guidelines for Students' Technical Paper Competition, 2021

Theme of the Competition:


Recent Developments in Maritime Sector

Sub-themes:
(a) Sustainable Developments in Shipping & Future of the Marine
Vessels,
(b) Implementation of Nanotechnology in ships,
(c) EEXI - Energy Efficient options for ships in line with IMO
Requirement
(d) Effect of Environmental Regulation on Shipping & its Impact on
Ship Design,
(e) Intelligent Engines - Decarbonisation of shipping,
(f) Cyber security – Regulatory Aspects and Data Theft in Maritime
Industry,
(g) Role of Big data and Artificial Intelligence in Maritime Operations,
(h) Implementation of Innovations in Shipbuilding Industry,
(i) Human issues in the current shipping scenario.

Last date of submission of the papers – 31 August 2021

Length of the Papers


Papers should not exceed 2,000 words in length and should not carry more
than 5 illustrations / photographs.

Paper Submission
Submission of a paper implies: that the same has not been submitted/
published before; that it is not under consideration anywhere else; that its
publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the
responsible authorities of the institution. INSA will not be held legally
responsible should there be any claims of any nature.

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have


already been published elsewhere are required to clearly mention the details
of the source. This should include the name of the publication/ website. The
same should be also mentioned in ‘References’ with more details of the
source, e.g. full website address; details of the publication etc. Any material
received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the
authors.

Online Submission
Paper should be mailed in soft copy to [email protected]
The file should be in MS Word format. Calculations, if any, should be in MS
Excel format. No other types of files must be forwarded. Other details are as
follows:
Font: Arial 11 points or Time New Roman 12 points.
Spacing between lines – 1.5 lines

Title page
The title page should include:
 Title of the paper
 The name(s) of the author(s)
 Email addresses of all authors
 Name of the course in which the author(s) are studying, including the
year of study. E.g. B.Tech. (Marine Engineering), Second Year.
 Name of the Maritime Training Institute, including its address; Name
of a contact person with personal phone number and email address.
(This person may be the Head of the institution or any other
responsible person).

Chapters in the paper


The submitted paper should have chapters in following sequence:

1. Abstract – It should be of 150 to 250 words and provide a brief


summary of the paper. It should also have 4 to 6 keywords which can
be used for indexing purposes.
2. Introduction – This should have the importance of the topic and its
relevance.
3. Main body of the paper – This may be in more than one chapters, if it
is necessary. The headings of these chapters may be suitably given.
4. Conclusion – Summation of the paper, including any ideas for further
work.
5. References – The list of references should only include works that
have been referred and used by the author(s). The entries in the list
should be numbered consecutively.
 Journal article
‘Name of the author(s), ‘name of the journal’, month of publication,
page number.
 Book
‘Name of the author’, in ‘title of the book’, (Publisher and the year of
publishing), p. number(s).
 Online document/ information
Complete address of the website, including the referred page, accessed
on ‘date of accesses.

6. Declarations –

(a) Consent to participate - A declaration form, as per the provided


format, should be included.  This must be filed up, as
necessary, signed by the Head of the Department/ Head of the
Institution. This is a declaration that, if selected by INSA,
author(s) will be permitted to visit Mumbai on the decided date
for formal presentation.
(b) Consent for publication - Paper, once selected for presentation by
INSA, would become the property of INSA and it may permit
publishing of the paper in any journal as deem fit. The author(s)
or the Institution will have no right on the paper.

English Language Editing


It is imperative that the author(s) need to ensure the English language is of
sufficient quality to be understood. It may be better that an English
language teacher or any other faculty member of the Institution review the
paper for clarity. It should also be noted that the quality of language carries
weightage for evaluation.

Plagiarism
Plagiarism is copying the exact words of another author without using
quotation marks and without referencing the source. It also includes using
the ideas of another author without referencing the source and copying
another student’s work (current or previous) in any format.

Important note: INSA may use software to screen for plagiarism.

Basis for shortlisting


The papers will be initially assessed and shortlisted on the basis of following
criteria:

Relevance to the theme


Originality of the work
Suitability of the research/study method
Structure of the paper
Standard of English
Discussion and Conclusion
Clarity of figures, tables and other images
Adequate references and cited properly
Overall evaluation

The performance of the presentation, adherence to the allotted time, clarity


of the topics and performance in the question & answer part shall be added
in the initial performance for the award of final prizes.

The decision of the assessment team shall be final.

Confidentiality
Authors should treat all communication with INSA as confidential which
includes correspondence with direct representatives from the Journal such
as Editors-in-Chief and/or Handling Editors and reviewers’ reports unless
explicit consent has been received to share information.

selected for presentation by INSA, would become the property of INSA and it
may permit publishing of the paper in any journal as deem fit. The author(s)
or the Institution will have no right on the paper.
