DRESS AND APPEARANCE
Students are expected to come to school looking clean and neat, and dressed in a manner that is
accepted as being in good taste. When a student’s appearance at school or at a school-sponsored
activity violates the dress code, the parent may be requested to bring alternative clothing and/or
the student could be subject to disciplinary action.
The following dress code is consistent with the minimum standards set by the school district.
Shirts, blouses, and other garments worn above the waist must have sleeves. Clothing that exposes the torso is
not allowed, nor is clothing that exposes cleavage.
No messages, pictures, symbols or clothing may be worn or displayed which portray ideas that are
harmful to the health, safety, and welfare of students, e.g., messages which relate to drugs,
smoking, alcohol, sex, gangs, profanity or violence and messages that can be demeaning to others on the basis
of gender, race, religion, race or ethnicity. The following examples which are considered to
be unacceptable are, but are not limited to: tube tops, tank tops, spaghetti straps and halters,
bare back or midriff clothing, skin-tight clothing, see-through clothing, bathing suits.
Skirts, skorts and dresses may be no shorter than 2 inches above the top of the knee. Shorts must
be no shorter than 4 inches above the top of the knee. No board shorts (boys’ bathing suits), or soffees are
allowed.
Pants, jeans and slacks must be worn to the top of the hipbone or higher. All garments with belt loops must be
secured and belted at the hip, must not be baggy or oversized, and the hem of pant legs must not drag on the
ground. Clothing which is not worn appropriately, not properly fastened, has tears, holes, or is frayed (even if
something is worn underneath) will not be permitted. Undergarments shall not be exposed, i.e. boxer shorts,
underwear, bras. Leggings are permitted, but must be covered by a dress, skirt, skort, or shorts that are in dress
code length (skirts, skorts, and dresses may not be shorter than 2 inches above the knee; shorts may not be
shorter than 4 inches above the top of the knee). No clothes or accessories with metal studs, spikes, ornaments,
chains, or other objects which can scratch furniture, damage property, or cause harm to oneself or others may
be worn. Neither pajamas nor slippers shall be worn to school.
Shoes must be worn at all times. For safety reasons, tap shoes, shoes with cleats or shoes with
wheels may not be worn. Shoes with built in containers are prohibited. Shoes with laces and/or
straps must be secured at all times. Athletic shoes may be required for Physical Education classes.
Blankets are not allowed and their use as jackets is prohibited.
Hats, sunglasses, Bandanas and all other confiscated items may only be picked up by a parent.
No backpacks may be brought to WLC and purses and handbags must be no larger than 8 X 10 inches. If a
student needs to bring a larger bag to school, the student will leave the bag in the front office.
Consequences for dress code violations will be as follows:
1st Offense – Call to parent for replacement clothing
2nd Offense –After School Detention
Future offenses—Meeting with parents
