Van Mahotsav Saptah 2021

Let’s know about the History

A botanist called MS Randhawa had organized the first Indian national

tree plantation week in 1947. In the same year, Khurshid Ahmad Khan, the then
Commissioner of Delhi inaugurated the first event by planting Bauhinia
saplings. In 1950, the plantation drives were declared as a national activity by
the then Minister of Food and Agriculture Kanaiyalal Maneklal Munshi. Later
in the same year, Munshi moved the event to the first week of July and renamed
it as Van Mahotsav.

Introduction

 Van Mahotsav 2021 will be a week-long celebration across India, which

will start on July 1st and conclude on July 7th, 2021.

 The Van Mahotsav is celebrated every year in the first week of July to
raise awareness of tree plantation and forest conservation.

 Van Mahotsav is celebrated in India by planting tens and thousands of

saplings. It is a festival that encourages the citizens of India to plant more
trees.

 Forests and trees help in lowering the carbon footprint and maintain
ecological balance. Van Mahotsav's celebration in the first week of July
also coincides with the onset of the monsoon.

Van Mahotsav celebration by our IOM ENVIS RP

As a part of our planting campaign – Green initiative, we took honor in

planting saplings to commemorate the Van Mahatsav day.

As we have planned to celebrate the day, we were also very keen that the
day should not be a single day celebration and it should also bring the
awareness of plants and the uses of plants to our society and to our environment
surrounding. We made sure and believe that by seeing our initiative, at least
some would have realized and start planting the trees in their premises, either in
their terrace, schools, colleges, universities etc.,
We invited Anna University Convener Committee Member
Dr. Rajani Parthasarthi Professor, Dept. of Information Science and
Technology, to plant trees and to celebrate along with our IOM ENVIS RP
team. Dr. Rajani Parthasarthi madam was very happy and accepted our
invitation to plant in our ENVIS Garden.

We invited Anna University Estate Officer Dr. K. Gunasekaran,

Professor, Dept. of Civil Engineering, Division of Transportation Engineering,
to plant trees and to celebrate along with our IOM ENVIS RP team.

We also invited our Director i/c of IOM and ENVIS Coordinator

Dr. B.V. Mudgal and Researcher Dr. Hema Achyuthan and our Institute for
Ocean Management Staff to join and celebrate along with our IOM ENVIS RP
team.

On July 6th, 2021 all our invitees and our department staff were exultant
to celebrate the day along with us by planting trees. We have planted Magilam,
Nochi, Pungam, Ranagali, Arali, Pirandai, Aloe vera and some seeds too.
