GE 131 – Engineering Mechanics
(Common to all branches except Marine Engineering)
(Regulations 2001)

Time : Three Hours Maximum : 100 Marks

Answer all questions


Part – A (10×2=20 Marks)

1. Explain principle of transmissibility and state its significance.

2. State the necessary and sufficient conditions for equilibrium of a particle in two
dimensions.
   
3. Two forces F1 = 5i and F2 = 8.66 j pass through a point whose co-ordinates are
(2, 1). Calculate the moment of the force about the origin.

4. Explain perpendicular axis theorem.

5. Define principal axes and principal moment of inertia.

6. What is called the coefficient of static friction ?

7. Explain dry friction.

8. The motion of a particle is defined by the relation x = t3 – 16t2 – 22 where x is


expressed in metre and t in seconds. Determine the acceleration of the particle at
t = 3 s.

9. What is meant by time of restitution ?

10. Define angular acceleration.

11. a) i) A flywheel starts rotating from rest and is given an acceleration of 1 rad/s2. Find
the angular velocity and speed in rpm, after 1.5 minutes. If the flywheel is
brought to rest with a uniform angular retardation of 0.5 rad/s2, determine
the time taken by the flywheel in seconds to come to rest. (8)
ii) What is angular acceleration of the pulley shown in Fig. Q. 11 (a) (ii) turning
under the action of two masses ? (8)

b) A tripod is acted upon by forces at ‘p’ as follows : 20 kN along positive direction,
40 kN along the negative y direction. Three legs rest ground at points A (–4, 0,0),
B(5, 0,2) and C(–2, 0, –3). Height of above origin is 10m. Coordinate of P(0, 10, 0).
Find the forces in leg tripod.
12. a) Three concurrent forces in spaceF1, F2 and F3 are acting at A as shown in
Fig. Q. 12 (a). An unknown force F , attached to the system makesthe particle
A in equilibrium. Find the magnitude and direction of the force F . (16)

b) A 200 kN vertical force is applied to the end of a lever which is attached to a


shaft at B as shown in Fig. Q. 12 (b). Determine (i) The magnitude of horizontal
force applied at A which creates same moment about B (ii) The smallest force
applied at A which creates the same moment about B (iii) How far from the
end B, a 400 kN vertical force must act to create the same moment about B ?
(iv) Replace the given system of force at B. (16)

13. a) Determine the moment of inertia about the centroidal axes for the section shown
in Fig. Q. No. 13 (a). Also, determine the radii of gyration about the centroidal axes.

b) Determine the principal moments of inertia and locate the principal axes for
the angle section shown in Fig. Qn. 13 (b).

14. a) i) A force of 3 kN is required to just move a certain body up an inclined plane


of angle 15° with the horizontal and the force is acting parallel to the plane.
If the angle of inclination of the plane is raised to 20°, the force required
again parallel to the plane is 3.5 kN. Find the weight of the body and the
coefficient of friction. (10)
ii) A rope thrown from a ship to a pier is wrapped two full turns around the
pier. The tension in the rope is 7500 N, by exerting a force of 150 N on its
free end a dock worker can just keep the rope from slipping. Determine the
coefficient of friction between rope and pier and also determine the tension
in the rope that could be resisted by the same 150 N force if the pier wrapped
3 full turns. (6)

b) i) A particle is thrown vertically upwards from the ground level with a velocity
of 30 m/s . Four seconds later another particle is thrown vertically upwards
from the same point with a velocity of 40 m/s. Determine when and where
the two particles will cross each other. Also find the direction of their motion
and velocity of each particle when they cross each other. (10)
ii) An automobile travels 360 m in 30 seconds while being accelerated at a
constant rate of 0.5 m/s2. Determine its initial velocity, final velocity and
the distance traveled during the first 10 seconds. (6)

15. a) i) Two identical spheres A and B strike each other as shown in figure 15(a)(i).
If e = 0.9, find the velocity and the direction of each ball after impact. (10)

ii) A 3 kg stone is dropped from a height ‘h’ and strikes the ground with a
velocity of 30 m/s . Determine the kinetic energy of stone as it strikes the
ground and the height ‘h’ from which it was dropped. (6)

b) i) The system shown in figure 15(b)(i) is released from rest. Block A and B
weigh 500 N and 800 N respectively. The coefficient of friction between
block A and plane is 0.2. Find the acceleration of each block, the distance
moved and the velocity of each block after 5 seconds. Also find the tension
in the cable. (8)

ii) Each of the two slender rods shown in figure 15(b)(ii) is 0.75 m long has
a mass of 6 kg. The system is released from rest when β = 60°. Determine
the angular velocity of the rod when β = 20° and velocity at D at the same
instant. (8)
