INSTRUCTIONS: Attempt ALL the questions. Each question has equal weight.
Please present your work logically and neatly, and cross-off any rough work that you do not want the marker to see.
Marks will be deducted for messy, disorganized presentation. Use the back of the page for your rough work, if needed.
1. Consider an ideal gas that occupies 2.25 L at 1.33 bar.
(a) Calculate the work required to compress the gas
isothermally to a volume of 1.50 L at a constant
pressure of 2.00 bar followed by another isothermal
compression to 0.800 L at a constant pressure of 3.75
bar.
(b) Compare the result with the work of compressing the
gas isothermally and reversibly from 2.25 L to 0.800 L.
Express your answers in unit of J.

2. One mole of a monoatomic ideal gas initially at a pressure of 2.00 bar and a temperature of
273 K is taken to a final pressure of 4.00 bar by the reversible path defined by P/Vm = C, where
C is a constant and Vm is the molar volume.
(a) Show that C is 0.176 bar mol L−1.
(b) Calculate the final temperature for this process.
(c) Calculate the values of U, w, q, and H for this process. Assume the molar heat capacity at
constant volume, CV,m, to be 12.5 J mol−1 K−1. Express your answers in unit of kJ.

3. A quantity of N2(g) at 298 K is compressed reversibly and adiabatically from a volume of 20.0 L
to 5.00 L. Assuming ideal gas behaviour and the molar heat capacity at constant volume
CV,m = 5R/2, calculate the final temperature.

4. Consider the process when one mole of an ideal gas is taken from T1, V1 to T2, V2, and we can
assume that the heat capacity at constant volume, CV, does not depend on the temperature.
T V
(a) Show that S C V ln 2 nR ln 2
T1 V1
(b) Calculate the value of S if one mole of N2(g) is expanded from 20.0 L at 273 K to 300 L at
400 K. Assume the molar heat capacity at constant pressure CP,m = 29.4 J K−1 mol−1.
Express your answer in unit of J K−1 mol−1.
