ROLL OF NCC CADETS DURING CORONA PANDEMIC
The covid-19 pandemic is the defining global health crisis of
our time and the greatest global humanitarian challenge the world
has faced since World War-II. The novel corona virus which
originated in the city of Wuhan, China has quickly spread to
various countries with many cases having been reported
worldwide. The whole world is suffering due to corona viruses
rising cases.
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2(SARS-
COV-2),which causes corona virus disease (covid-19) was first
identified in DEC 2019 in Wuhan , china which then spread to
many countries according to the document which was filed in MAY
8th 2020 by World Health Organization (W.H.O) the total number
of positive cases then was 3,759,967 and the death toll attributed
to COVID-19 had reached 259,474 worldwide .
Till now 212 countries and territories have confirmed cases of
SARS-COV-2 infection due to which W.H.O declared COVID-19 a
“Public Health Emergency of International Concern”.
India with population of more than 1.34 billion the Second
largest population in the world facing more difficulties in
controlling transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome
corona virus-2 (SARS-COV-2) among its population. Multiple
strategies are required to handle this outbreak; which includes
computational modelling, proper health care system by
government, statistic tool, well PPE kits and qualitative as well
quantitative analysis to control the spread as well as the rapid
development of new treatment.
The name of corona virus is derived from Latin “corona”
meaning “crown” or “wreath”. It’s was coined by June Almeda and
David Tyrrell who first observed and studied human corona virus.
The word was first use in print in 1968 by a informal group of
virologists in the journal “NATURE” .
Corona virus was first discovered in the 1930s, when an acute
respiratory infection of domesticated chicks was shown to be caused
by infections bronchitis virus (IBV) which was found in North Dakota.
Later in 1940s two more animal corona viruses. Mouse hepatitis virus
(MHV) and transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) were isolated.
Human corona virus was discovered in late 1960s. Other
human corona viruses have since been identified, including
• SARS-COV in 2003,
• HCOVNL63 in 2004,
• Hochiki in 2005,
• MERS-Cove in 2012, • SARS-COV in 2019.
Corona virus in a group of related RNA viruses that causes
diseases in mammals and birds in human, these viruses caused
respiratory tract infection which may change from mild to lethal. The
symptoms of corona virus in different in differ species. There are no
vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent or treat human corona virus
infection.
Infected carries are able shed viruses into the environment .The
interaction of corona virus spine protein with it’s complementary cell
receptor is central in determining the tissue tropism infectivity and
species range of the released virus . Corona virus mainly target the
epithelial cell . They are transmitted from one host to other
depending on the corona virus species , by either an aerosol, forint or
faceal-oral route. Human corona virus infect the epithelial cells of the
respiratory tract where as in animal epithelial cells of digestive tract .
EX-SARSCoV infects via an aerosol route the human epithelial cell of
the lungs by binding to the angiotensin covering enzyme 2 (ACE2)
receptor.
4 Human corona virus produce symptoms that are generally mild
• Human Corona Virus OC43 (HCoV-OC43)
• Human corona virus HKUI (HCoV-HKVI)
• Human corona virus 229E (HCoV-229E)
• Human corona virus NL63 (HCoV-NL63)
3 Human corona viruses produce syndrome that are potentially
severe :-
• Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus
(MERS-CoV)
• Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus
(SARSCoV)
• Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus
(SARSCoV-2)
The SARS-CoV-2 has 96% similarity with a bat corona virus so
it is widely suspected to originate from bats as well, The
pandemic has resulted in travel restriction and nation wide
lockdown in many countries .
The ministry of Health & Family welfare of India has raised
awareness about the recent outbreak and has taken necessary action
to control the COVID-19 . The both central and state government are
taking several steps to achieve the goals . More over the Indian
government implemented a 55 days lockdown throughout the country
on March 25th, 2020 to control the transmission of virus . The outbreak
had affected inextricably lined to the economy of the nation as it has
dramatically stopped all the industrial sector. First case in India was
reported in state of Kerala in January 30th,2020 after that the number
of cases of COVID-19 raised drastically.
According to ICMR, cases on May 5th 2020, total 1437788 suspected
and samples sent to NIV, Pune among which 56342 cases were
positive.
An easy way to decrease SARS-CoV-2 infection rates is to avoid virus
exposer . As there are no vaccines or antiviral drugs to prevent it .
People of India should avoid travelling to countries highly affected
with the virus , practice proper hygiene and avoid consuming food that
is not home cooked. Necessary preventive measures such as wearing
mask regularly ,hand washing avoiding direct content with infected
person . Currently according to the ICMR guidelines, doctors prescribe
a combination of Lopinavir and Ritonavir for severe COVID-19 cases
and Hydroxychloroquine for Prophylaxis of SARS-CoV-2 infection. In
collaboration with WHO, ICMR will conduct a therapeutic trial for
COVID-19 in India . The ICMR recommends using the US-FDA-approved
cloud real time RT-PCR systems such as GeneXpert and Roche
COBAS6800/8800 ,which are used to diagnose Chronic Myeloid
Leukemia and Melanoma, respectively . Antibody based rapid tests
were validated at NIV ,Pune and found to be satisfactory ; the rapid
test kits likes;
• SARS-CoV-2 Antibody test ,COVID-19
• IgM & IgG Antibody rapid test, etc .
As a step further, on technological aspect, the Union Health
Ministry has launched a mobile application called “Aarogya setu” that
works both android & iOS mobile phones . This application constructs
a user databases for establishing an awareness network that can alert
people & government about possible COVID-19 victims.
The Narendra Modi government has decided to rope in NCC
volunteers aged 18+ to help Indian civil infrastructure fight against
widening coronavirus outbreaks . The NCC has moved to help the
civilian authorities by extending services of it’s cadets under program
called “Exercise NCC Yogdan”
NCC which operates under the ministry of Defence is the
largest uniformed youth organization of the country . With an
approximate strength of 14 lakhs. It is a tri service organization ,
comprising the Army, Navy and Air wing engaged in grooming the
youth of the country into disciplined & patriotic citizens . It was
activated on JULY 16th 1948 , having it’s Head Quarters in New Delhi
.
The motto of NCC is “UNITY & DISCIPLINE” which was
approved by CAD meeting on 12 OCT 1980 NCC accts as a one of
the greatest cohesive forces of the nation , bringing together the
youth handling from different parts of the country & moulding
them in to united , secular & disciplined citizens of nation which is
headed by a Director General with the rank of Lieutenant General.
In a statement released , the NCC issued guidelines for
temporary of its cadets to boost relief efforts and functioning of
various agencies involved in battling the pandemic . As of now
25000 local cadets are being mobilized to provide necessary local
assistance . The takes for cadets include manning of helpline/call
center ,distribution of relief material medicines /food essentials
commodities , community assistance date management and social
distance and traffic management.
Cadets those are in home can also play there role and sever
community during the pandemic . The can help government to
win in this time of exigency . They can spread awareness about
the COVID -19 among their friends , family, and societies. They can
people to maintain social distance planting tress to encourage
environmental activities . Encouraging the people of their society
about practicing proper hygiene and avoiding consumption of
food that is not home cooked , how to take care of elders and
older people also small children as they are more prone to be
affected by the disease .
They can also inform them about the symptoms of corona virus
such as
• FEVER
• DIFFICULTY IN BREATHING (BREATHLESSNESS)
• SORE THROAT
• COUGH
• FEVER
They should also aware about people having disease like
diabetes , cardiovascular disease , chronic respiratory disease,
cancer, are high risk of getting affected with COVID – 19.
Every religion activity has been a halt in lie of corona virus
outbreak and if we see any of the gathering its our responsibility to
guide them and report if required so, its our duty to spread right kind
of accurate information about COVID-19.
The NCC cadets are helping the administration and distribution
of ration / food to the needy. In supply chain and data management.
They are also guiding the public in maintaining social distance . The
NCC cadets who are extending help to the administration in Delhi is
working on the basis of a detailed plan for 11 districts . Since April 1
almost 2,000 cadets are already giving voluntary services in 12
states and Union Territories and the numbers are increasing. More
than 50,000 have volunteered so far, where they are working with
the civil authorities they are provide with proper safety equipment
like mask, gloves, etc during their deployment . And most
importantly they are under supervision of officer, Junior
commissioned officer, PI staff and ANO of NCC . This is done in an
effort to ensure the safety of cadets.
So, far Tamil Nadu has deployed 306 cadets, Gujarat 295, Delhi
290, Madhya Pradesh 57 as per the sources.
Against corona virus stands the best of humanity inform of NCC
cadets along with countless youth or young people who are keeping
their community helping them to recover from pandemic . It is not
corona virus dangerous , but it’s rate of spread which threats all . The
only things which can help all of us to fight this pandemic is unity,
strength, our dedication to our motherland, humanity and practicing
social distancing properly . Together we all can combat it and win over
it, as India is nation example of “UNITY IN DIVERSITY”.
