Unbreakable Cable: Phone Charger Technical Report

I.
Theoretical Background
The theory behind this innovation was based on Devin N. Perkin's (2014) research
article titled E-Waste: A Global Hazard. According to the article, the waste from the end of life of
electrical and electronic equipment is called e-waste and it is one of the fastest-growing world
problems as technology advances. E-Waste, one of the fastest-growing sources of waste
around the world by 2020, global e-waste generation is estimated to reach 50 million tons, with
an annual growth rate of 4% to 5%. The amount of brand new mobile phones that sold in the
year 2020 is around 1.3 million total sales and in 2021 it is currently at 1.5 million and still going
up. Brand new mobile phones usually come with a charging cable and the quality of the cable it
comes with is not that great would tend to break in a short amount of time.
Charging cables are known to break over time and the longevity of their lifespan
depends on how people use and take care of their cables. But no matter how much the cable is
taken care of it would still have a chance to break sooner or when it is less expected. Brand
new mobile phones would come with a stock charging cable and its quality is not as good as
third-party mobile phone chargers and would not also last for a long time of everyday usage.
People use their mobile phones all the time whether indoors or outdoors a high quality and
durable charging cables are important especially on outdoor occasions. Most people would just
buy new charging cables every time their charger breaks and would not consider fixing it
because it is a hassle and time-consuming.

The proposed solution to this problem to charging cable being easily broken and
contributing to the rapidly growing world problem of e-waste is the unbreakable phone charger.
The unbreakable phone charger is designed to be convenient to consumers. The convenient
feature of the unbreakable phone charger is that a consumer can fix the cable with ease without
difficulty. Not only it would be easy to fix it would also save time and money for the consumers
because it would make them buy fewer charging cables. The product would also help decrease
the e-waste coming specifically from charging cables.

II. Product / Project Description

The unbreakable phone charger cable is an innovation of the phone charger cable that
is commonly used today. Unlike the standard cables, the unbreakable cable allows the user to
be able to reuse the cable once the small portion of cable at the charger port is torn. All the user
has to do is to cut off that small portion that is broken and re-plug the remaining cable to the
micro-USB end of the cable. Easy as that.
The cable features zinc alloy, a copper core, and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) material
which is used to make the cables flexible and withstand various deformations and still work
100% to their full capacity. TPE allows the cable to be detachable or cut off and re-plug into the
micro-USB end of the cable and still function like it was never cut off. The cable can be applied
to iPhone and Android Type-C cables (Drobny, 2014).
This product will benefit everyone who has a phone as it is a common struggle in today’s
world that phone charger cables tend to break loose when it is pulled the opposite way. Not only
is the product durable, but also recyclable. As mentioned above, electronic waste is one of the
major problems in today’s world, and this product innovation will help reduce the percentage of

electronic waste because of its recyclable attribute. (See Figure 1 in the next section for a
concept of the product).

III. Process / Mechanism Description

The idea of this product is derived from the never-ending problem of USB cabled looping
and breaking itself exposing its wires. This product solves that problem by introducing a cuttable
and re-attachable cable.

Figure 1: Cable End Design

The cable design has a liftable lock at the micro-USB end of the cable. Making the main
cable detachable from the micro-USB end.

Figure 2: Detachable Cable Design

The detachable cable design features a patented flat cable which makes the cuttable
cable functional. The wires for each of the four needed cables of every USB cable (Red for
main electricity, white for data but colored light gray in the figure for easier visibility, green for
more advanced data, and black but colored in a bit lighter shade for the same reason as the
white-colored wire is for the ground.

IV. Assembly and Testing

To assemble the product, we must first go through the specifications or the contents of
said product. As stated earlier, the cable will contain zinc alloy and thermoplastic elastomer,
micro-USB (IOS or Android), and copper wire. The thermoplastic elastomer will be used as the
container for the wires. As for the micro-USB, it will have a liftable lock which is where the cable
needs to be connected and then start working.

Assembling the product is simple enough. After buying the product, for you to connect
the wire to the micro-USB, you have to cut the edge of the cable first, about 2cm. After cutting,
you can connect the cable to the micro-USB and charge your phone away. As simple as that.

V. Discussion
Making the product is the most challenging part of the whole process. We had to find the
proper materials for it to work. But we didn’t just make an unbreakable charger, we also had to
figure out the right proper current so that the cable can function properly and efficiently. The
pandemic is one of the factors that gave us difficulty in completing this product. Making this
product with less interaction with co-workers made it more challenging than it should’ve been.
Another problem that arose while working on this product is different ideas that were cluttered
during meetings. Other employees had other innovative ideas for the product that were not
approved and it made tension inside the work environment.
This product supports both Android and iOS users. You can choose to remove the
microchip to fit your respective phone. This product also contains a pure copper core, which
means it has fast-charged. Another detail that consumers need to know is that the
recommended cut of the cable when opening for the first time is 2cm. This product is not safe
for consumption so make sure to keep the cut parts of the cable away from children and
dispose of them immediately.

SOURCES OF RESEARCH

GED 106 Group 6 FEXW

The idea of the Unbreakable Cable for Phone Chargers was inspired by the

frustration that people when their phone chargers are broken. As innovators, the idea of

creating a phone charger that will eliminate that frustration came to mind. Hence; the

innovation of the typical phone charger was created.

With the e-waste’s rate constantly rising, the disposal of phone chargers is one of

the key contributors to e-waste. Unbreakable Cables for Phone Chargers eliminate that

instance and replaces it with a recyclable cable that can withstand for years more than the

typical phone charger. The idea of contributing to the reduction of e-waste strengthened

the researchers to truly pursue innovating the typical phone charger into something that

will benefit the people and nature.
