Flowchart Symbols And Definitions

A flowchart is designed to be used from start to final repair. It's like a map showing you the shortest distance. But beware: if you go off the "map"
anywhere but a "stop" symbol, you can easily get lost. The image shows a list of symbols and their respective definitions. These symbols will show
up in the flow charts.

Verifying Tight Electrical Connections

NOTE:
^ The term "Intermittent Failure" is used in these charts. It simply means a system may have had a failure, but it checks out OK at this time. If
the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) on the dash does not come on, check for poor connections or loose wires at all connectors related to
the circuit that you are troubleshooting (see illustration).
^ Most of the troubleshooting flowcharts have you reset the Engine Control Module (ECM) and try to duplicate the diagnostic trouble code
(DTC). If the problem is intermittent and you can't duplicate the code, do not continue through the flowchart. To do so will only result in
confusion and, possibly, a needlessly replaced ECM.
^ "Open" and "Short" are common electrical terms. An open is a break in a wire or at a connection. A short is an accidental connection of a
wire to ground or to another wire. In simple electronics, this usually means something won't work at all. In complex electronics (like
ECM's), this can sometimes mean something works, but not the way it's supposed to.
^ If the electrical readings are not as specified when using the test harness, check the test harness connections before proceeding.

Troubleshooting Procedures
1. VERIFY THE PROBLEM
Operate the problem circuit to check the accuracy of the complaint. Note the symptoms of the inoperative circuit.

2. ANALYZE THE PROBLEM

Refer to the schematic diagrams in CHASSIS ELECTRICAL DIAGRAMS. Determine how the circuit is supposed to work by tracing the
current path(s) from the power source through the circuit components to ground. Based on the symptoms noted in step 1 and an
understanding of the circuit operation, identify one or more possible causes of the problem.

3. ISOLATE THE PROBLEM

Make circuit tests to prove or disprove the preliminary diagnosis made in step 2. A logical, simple procedure is the key to efficient
troubleshooting. Test for the most likely cause of failure first. Try to make tests at points that are easily accessible.

4. REPAIR THE PROBLEM

Once the specific problem is identified, make the repair using the proper tools and safe procedures.

5. VERIFY THE REPAIR

Operate the circuit to check for satisfactory circuit operation. Good repair practice calls for rechecking all circuits that have been worked on.

Voltage Test

VOLTAGE TEST

This test measures voltage in a circuit. By taking measurements at several points (terminals or connectors) along the circuit, you can isolate the
problem.

To take a voltage measurement, connect the negative lead of the voltmeter to the battery's negative terminal or any other known good ground.
Connect the positive lead of the voltmeter to the point you want to test. The voltmeter will measure the voltage present in the circuit.

Voltage Drop Test

VOLTAGE DROP TEST

Wires, connectors, and switches are designed to conduct current with a minimum loss of voltage. A voltage drop of more than one volt indicates a
problem.

To test for voltage drop, connect the voltmeter leads to connectors at opposite ends of the circuit's suspected problem area. The positive lead
should be connected to the circuit connector closest to the power source. The voltmeter will show the voltage drop between the two points. Any
switches in the circuit should be ON during this test.

Continuity Test

CONTINUITY TEST

Before performing a continuity test, disconnect the car's battery. Zero the ohmmeter by holder the test leads together and setting the meter to zero.
Isolate the circuit to be tested. Connect the ohmmeter leads to opposite ends of the circuit's suspected problem area. The ohmmeter will show the
resistance across the circuit. Continuity can also be tested with a self-powered test light.

CAUTION: DO NOT use an ohmmeter or self-powered test light on solid state or computer related circuits. The voltage that an ohmmeter/test
light applies to a circuit could damage these components.

Short Test Using Voltmeter

SHORT TEST USING A VOLTMETER

To locate a wiring short to ground, remove the blown fuse and disconnect the load. Connect the voltmeter leads to the fuse terminals. The positive
lead should be connected to the terminal closest to the power source.

Starting near the power source, move the wire harness back and forth while watching the voltmeter. If the voltmeter shows a reading while moving
a particular section of the harness, the harness has a short to ground.

Short Test Using Ohmmeter

SHORT TEST USING AN OHMMETER

Disconnect the battery. Zero the ohmmeter by holder the test leads together and setting the meter to zero. Remove the blown fuse and disconnect
the load. Connect the ohmmeter leads to the fuse terminals.

Starting near the power source, move the wire harness back and forth while watching the ohmmeter. If the ohmmeter shows a low or no resistance
reading while moving a particular section of the harness, the harness has a short to ground.

Current Test Using Ammeter

CURRENT TEST USING AN AMMETER

To measure the current in a circuit, connect the ammeter leads to the connectors or terminals in SERIES with the circuit. The ammeter will show
the current through the circuit.

Preliminary Inspection
NOTE: Perform this step after Verifying Customer Complaint and performing a Visual Inspection.

NOTE: System fault codes are cleared whenever the control unit or the battery is disconnected. Therefore, all fault codes should be read prior to
any vehicle power interruption or troubleshooting.

Any Of The Following Should Not Be Overlooked As The Possible Cause Of A Driveability Problem;

Checking the Basics

CHECKING THE BASICS
All troubleshooting must begin by "CHECKING THE BASICS". Certain basic faults can be undetectable by the self-diagnostic systems of the
fuel and ignition control units and in some cases can actually interfere with the self-checking and fault memory operation.

System fault codes are cleared whenever the control unit or the battery is disconnected. Therefore, all fault codes should be read prior to any
vehicle power interruption or troubleshooting.

Prior to any teardown, repair or component replacement, the following steps should always be considered.

COMPLAINT VERIFICATION
Whenever possible the repairing technician should personally verify the complaint. Having experienced the malfunction, the technician is less
likely to try to repair non-existent faults.

MALFUNCTION VERIFICATION
Today's sophisticated automotive systems are easily misunderstood, which can lead to repairs that attempt to force a particular system to perform
in a way that it was never intended to operate. Therefore, the troubleshooting technician should compare the system operation to the nominal
system operation as described in the section DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION. Furthermore, the technician is also encouraged to compare
the problem vehicle system operation with a known good vehicle.

PREVIOUS REPAIRS
The vehicle repair history can provide explanations to unusual complaints which seem to elude normal troubleshooting attempts. Incorrect
components or unapproved repairs can have subtle influences on seemingly unrelated systems.

BATTERY STATE OF CHARGE

Batteries in a state of partial discharge can have a dramatic effect on control units and related components.

POSITIVE BATTERY CABLE INTEGRITY

All B+ connections must be in perfect condition for trouble-free electronic system operation. Refer to ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC
DIAGRAMS for B+ interconnects.

FUSE INTEGRITY
Fuses are employed to prevent possible damage to electrical components and wiring harnesses. The fuses and their connections must be without
dynamic resistance. Dynamic resistance can only be checked using the voltage drop method of testing.

NEGATIVE GROUND CONNECTIONS

As all electrical circuits complete a circle, all B- connections must also be checked and verified to be in perfect condition. A poor "common"
ground point will cause seemingly unrelated systems to influence one another. High current systems which encounter a poor "common" ground
can back feed through other electrical systems causing unusual operation and perhaps inexplicable component failure. As with the B+ side of the
electrical system, the ground side should be checked dynamically using the voltage drop technique.

POWER TRAIN CABLE ATTACHMENTS

Metal cables attached to the engine or transmission which appear overheated and/or discolored indicate the need to thoroughly test all ground
connections.

POWER SUPPLY RELAYS

The system relay as well as its' plug connection can be a source of intermittent operation which will not set a fault in control unit fault memory.

CRANKSHAFT POSITION/SPEED SENSOR

Monolithic sensors should be checked statically and dynamically. Physical mounting and condition of the sensor must be assured.

HIGH TENSION COIL AND SECONDARY COMPONENTS WIRING

The secondary ignition system should be checked visibly as well as with a suitable engine analyzer and scope. All components should be
examined for tight connections and freedom from carbon tracking, moisture and corrosion.

FUEL DELIVERY

https://manuales-taller.sellfy.store/ [email protected]

Honda & Acura Integra (RS, LS) L4-1834cc 1.8L DOHC PFI 8
Fuel delivery must begin at once when cranking and the pressure in the fuel rails must be within specifications. Fuel pressure retention must be
maintained between the fuel pump outlet and the pressure regulator after engine shutdown.

SPARK PLUGS
If out of specification, spark plugs can significantly impair engine performance. Spark plug type, condition and gap must verified according to
specification.

AIR/FUEL RATIO
When troubleshooting idle quality or driveability complaints, it is necessary to consider the following:

^ Injector spray pattern quality

^ Presence of unmetered air leaks
^ Evaporative purge system
^ Excessive engine oil dilution
^ Substandard fuel or unapproved additives
^ Carbon build-up

Service Check Connector

1. Connect the Service Check Connector terminals with the SCS SHORT CONNECTOR.

Malfunction Indicator Lamp

2. Note the failure code. The Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) indicates a system failure code by its blinking frequency. The MIL can
indicate any number of simultaneous component problems by blinking separate codes, one after another. Problem codes 1 through 9 are
indicated by individual short blinks. Problem codes 10 through 59 are indicated by a series of long and short blinks. One long blink equals
10 short blinks. Add the long and short blinks together to determine the problem code.

DLC & SCS Connector Locations

1. Turn the ignition switch off.

2. Install the two pin Service Check Connector (SCS) in the dummy connector block located under the glovebox hinge.

NOTE: If the SCS service connector is left with its two pins connected together and there are no Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC) stored in
the Engine Control Module (ECM), the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) will stay illuminated when the ignition switch is turned ON.

Back-Up Fuse Location

3. After performing all necessary repairs, remove the "BACK UP" fuse (7.5A) from the under-hood fuse/relay box for 10 seconds. This will
reset the ECM fault code memory.

NOTE: Disconnecting the "BACK UP" fuse (7.5A) also cancels the anti-theft/radio presets and clock settings. Make note of the presets (and
anti-theft radio codes if so equipped) before removing the fuse.

Troubleshooting Guide (2 Of 2)

System Symptom Troubleshooting Guides

1. When the idle speed is out of specification and the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) does not blink Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 14,
check the following items:
Adjust the idle speed
Air conditioning signal
Alternator FR signal
A/T gear position signal
Starter switch signal
Brake switch signal
PSP switch signal
Fast idle thermo valve
Starting Air Valve
Hoses and connections
Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve and its mounting 0-rings

2. If the above items are normal, substitute a known-good IAC Valve and readjust the idle speed, refer to Adjustments/Idle Speed.

If the idle speed still cannot be adjusted to specification (and the MIL does not blink code 14) after IAC Valve replacement, substitute a
known-good Engine Control Module (ECM) and recheck. If symptom goes away, replace the original ECM.

Diagnostic Trouble Code Index

If codes other than those in the image are indicated, verify the code. If the code indicated is not listed in the image, replace the Engine Control
Module (ECM).

The Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) may come on, indicating a system problem when, in fact, there is a poor or intermittent electrical
connection. First, check the electrical connections, clean or repair connections if necessary.

The MIL and D4 indicator light may light simultaneously when the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 6, 7 or 17 is lit. Check the Programmed Fuel
Injection (PGM-FI) system according to the PGM-FI system troubleshooting, then recheck the D4 indicator light. If it lights, see Automatic
Transmissions Troubleshooting Chart.

The MIL does not come on when there is a malfunction in the A/T F1 signal or Electrical Load Detector (ELD) circuits. However, it will indicate
the codes when the Service Check Connector is shorted.
