• Disconnect battery ground cable.
• Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with
timing gear(s) removed.
• Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
• Turn crankshaft in normal direction of rotation
(unless otherwise stated).
• If fitted: Mark position of crankshaft position
(CKP) sensor before removal.
• Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other
gears.
• Observe all tightening torques.,

Valve timing procedures

• Engine No.4 cylinder at TDC of compression
stroke.
• Crankshaft gear timing mark at 11 o'clock
position D.
• Align camshaft gear timing mark fJ and install.
• Check camshaft thrust clearance is
0.0015-0.0050 in. 8.
• If clearance is less than 0.0015 in. replace
spacer rings.
• If clearance is more than 0.0050 in. replace
thrust plate.

Valve timing procedures

• Removal/installation of timing chain(s) requires:

Timing belt removal.
• To remove timing belt refer to the Autodata
timing belts manual.
• Engine NO.1 cylinder at TDC.

o Corvette: Align crankshaft mark with

• Crankshaft sprocket installer - o Remove the used crankshaft pulley bolt.
Chevrolet NO.J-41665. o Install a new crankshaft pulley bolt B !J and
• Flywheel/drive plate locking tool - torque to 37 ft. Ibs. + 140°.

General precautions
• Disconnect battery ground lead.
• Do NOT turn crankshaft or camshaft with
timing chain removed.
• Remove spark plugs to ease turning engine.
• Turn engine in normal direction of rotation
(unless otherwise stated).
• If required: Mark position of crankshaft position
(CKP) sensor before removal.
• Do NOT turn crankshaft via camshaft or other
sprockets.
• Observe tightening torques.

Valve timing procedures

• Removalfinstallation of timing chain(s) requires:
o Oil pan removal.
NOTE: Corvette: Mark position of crankshaft
pulley and crankshaft before removal.
• Crankshaft sprocket timing mark at 12 o'clock
position D.
• Camshaft sprocket timing mark at 6 o'clock
position 6.
• Install chain together with camshaft sprocket as
an assembly.
• Ensure timing marks facing each other on center
line between crankshaft and camshaft D & 6.

• Install lower timing chain and idler sprocket as an
assembly.
• Ensure 'blue' colored link aligned with idler
sprocket mark fl.
• Ensure 'yellow' colored link aligned with
crankshaft sprocket mark B.
• Retract lower timing chain tensioner and lock
using a pin 19.
• Install the timing chain tensioner and remove the
pin. Tightening torque: 97 in.lbs.
NOTE: Camshafts can be turned without
valves contacting pistons when crankshaft
set at 90° BTDC No.1 cylinder.
