What I Need to Know
In this lesson, you will learn how to write a summary of various text
materials presented. With this, you are expected to:
• identify the elements present in a text read
• summarize various text types based on elements
Your eagerness to start and discover your skill in telling a selection, story, or
statement will be tested once you begin turning the page of this module. So, what
are you waiting for, go on and enjoy learning new ideas and information!
What I Know
In your previous lesson, you have learned about the four text-
types according to features and purpose. Read and analyze the following
paragraphs and tell if each shows enumeration, classification, explanation
or time order. Note that it is possible that the paragraph might show two or
more text-types.
1. Did you know that the biggest animal in the world is blue whale? It
grows more than 30 meters in length and weighs 160 tons if fully
grown. Today, these blue whales become rare due to killing and
hunting by men.
4
2. Eggs and tadpoles stay in the water at the early cycle stage. First, a
fertilized egg grows into a tadpole. Then, as it grows, its hind legs
develop and legs appear. As the legs develop, its tail progressively
becomes shorter. The gills then start to disappear while lungs appear.
Finally, when the lungs become developed the frogs can now live on
land and in water.
3. The Philippines never fail to commemorate three national holidays
regularly each year. To give tribute, we celebrate National Heroes’ Day
every 30th of November, Rizal Day on the 30th day of December and
Independence Day during the 12th day of June. These are the holidays
that Filipinos certainly remember. They are the most widely observed
celebrations throughout the country.
4. Ultrasonic power is an electronic device that drives away annoying
animals from a specific area. This new discovery uses high frequency
sound. It forces these unwanted animals to leave the place. While the
sound irritates the animals, it never bothers people. The environment
is never harmed too.
5. Some birds sing for the love of singing, while others sing for other
purposes. Each kind of singing bird has its own song. The songs,
however, are not used for communication. One of the best singers is
the sparrow while the worst singer is the crow because of its an
unpleasant voice.

Have you experienced receiving a special gift from your father?
What did you feel about it? Were you able to express your gratitude towards
your father’s effort?
This time, read the letter of Amira on how grateful she was to her
Papa upon receiving a very special present.
What’s in
December 26, 2019
Dear Papa,
How are you there? Is it really a white Christmas where you
are right now? Are there snows everywhere in your place? Here at home,
you know that the season wouldn’t be the same without you.
Anyway Pa, we received the packages you sent us and
unboxed them after the Noche Buena. You made us all smile amazingly!
6
Thank you so much for working so hard since the day you left the country
to have career opportunities in a greener pasture in New York.
You know Papa, I felt surprise not only for the new Apple laptop
but for your extra 3,000.00 pesos cash gift. I am not used to receiving
Christmas presents with such big amount so it made me overwhelmed
because I’ll be able to buy all the things I need for my Journalism class.
Do you want to know what I bought with the money you gave
me? I bought a dozen of pencil, a dozen of multi-colored ball pens, Bob
Ong’s Alamat ng Gubat book, a back pack, 8 reams of intermediate paper
for writing feature’s articles, a dictionary containing not only the meanings
but also synonyms and antonyms, a book of inspirational stories and
quotes and Wattpad romantic stories, which I initially decided not to tell
you but I need to.
The remaining money will be spent for my bus ticket going to
Tuguegarao City. Dad, I’d like you to know that I am a qualifier for the
National Schools Press Conference. I hope to get the first place just like
you did when you’re at my age.
With so much love,
Amira

5. Did Amira spend the cash gift for nothing? Why?
6. What important role does Amira perform in her school?
7. Were the stuffs she bought essential for her schooling? Why?

9. Is telling everything like what Amira demonstrated shows how you
value the person? Why?
10.If you were Amira, how would you spend the cash gift you received?
What’s New
The appreciation letter you have read is one of the various forms
of text. Like stories, letters are created out of the basic elements of a text
that highlight important information. The key elements are the answers to
the classical questions—who, what, when, where, why, and how.
These questions are necessary to get the main idea and the
relevant details of the text. The needed key information from the materials
you are reading or listening to will be extracted by simply summarizing the
8
original source. It only means that only the important points are included
in the brief discussion of the text.
Now, study the summarized version of the appreciation letter you
have read. Pay attention on the presented key ideas and facts.
when where who
Summary
what
On the 26th day of December, at home,
Amira writes to her Papa how she spent the 3,000.00 pesos why
cash gift as a surprise extra Christmas present from him.
She is not used to receive cash gifts but feels overwhelmed
how
about it. She lists down the eight things she bought with
the money: a dozen of pencil, a dozen of multi-colored ball
pens, Bob Ong’s Book, a back pack, one thousand pieces
of intermediate paper for writing feature’s purposes, a
dictionary of synonyms and antonyms, a book of
inspirational stories and quotes and a love story wattpad
that she is hesitant to talk about. She also surprises her
father by telling him that she’s a National Schools Press
Conference qualifier.
In the presented summary above, you can still determine the key
elements found in the original letter of Amira. Therefore, you should keep
on your mind that in preparing the summarized version, focusing on the
necessary details of the material is needed.
9
Remember, the most important details answer the questions-
who, what, where, when, why and how. In other text-types, the answer for
who is not emphasized especially when explaining certain condition or
phenomenon in the field of science. On the other hand, if it is a text-type
that talks about biographies and other notable inventions, of course, the
answer for who question exists. In stories, fantasy or reality, the elements
such as the setting, major and minor characters, plot, resolution and theme
are always the focus of your summary.
This only means that the key elements present depend on the type
of text you are going to summarize. Another thing that you remember is to
not summarize any material without strong evidence. Sticking to what is
with the original text will enable you to have a sensible, reliable and
informative summary. Following these guidelines, you can complete a
shortened version of the story, article, or any work of fiction (fantasy) and
nonfiction (reality) you have read or listened to.
What Is It
A. Read and study the article lifted from the school paper. Fill out
the chart with the needed information. Then, write down the summary of
the text on your notebook.

Attitude matters
George Harrison B. Kline
Editor-in-Chief
As our society gets better; kids get worst. Before
90’s kids always respect and obey their parents. Now, when
parents ask you to do something, you will just act like you
did not hear them because you are busy on your mobile
phones.
Kids in this generation are always busy on their
mobile phones. Some of them even stay up all night that
affects the way they think. This is the probable reason why
they disobey their parents. They tend to neglect what their
parents are saying because they are focused on their gadgets.
Another reason why kids disrespect is that they
want more time to play than to study. Sometimes when their
parents force them to study, they got mad. They even say bad
words to their parents because they do not want to be
disturbed.
Parents and kids should respect each other. But
kids need to obey or respect their parents because their
parents are their best friends for a lifetime.
Parents somehow need to discipline their kids so
they will learn how to respect them.
11
Kids, obey your parents.

The Plants That Did Not Die
Many places on earth have dry or sandy soil, because there
is no fresh water close by. For a long time, people believed plants could
not grow in sandy soil.
Scientists began experiments in one part of Israel. They tried
growing 180 different kinds of plants on sandy hills and irrigated
them with seawater. Even if there was no fresh water close by, the
plants lived and now cover the hills with green plants. Other scientists
used seawater on potato plants in Spain. They used seawater on
barley and on wheat in India. All the plants grew very well.
With seawater, plants are growing today where nothing grew
before.

The Space Robots
Robots are complex machines that have
similarities and dissimilarities to human. They can perform a
lot of things that people can do. Much to our surprise, they
can do other things that people cannot. They do not need to
be fed nor do they drink. They do not get lonely because they
do not have feelings.
Robots can do the same things over and over exactly
the same way. They do not get bored. They do not get tired
and best of all, they can do things that are too dangerous
when people perform them.
Because of this, the National Aeronautics and
Space Administration (NASA) sends robot as part of the
exploration of phenomenon happens in the outer space. For
instance, this government agency has invented robonauts
that can move like human in space exploration.
A robonaut looks a similar to a person. It has head,
arms, feet and upper body. A robonaut may go outside the
International Space Station and may work with astronauts on
spacewalks. This only means that robots are exceptional
invention.
16
What I Have Learned
Various text-types may appear too long that is
why summarizing the text you have read or listened
would be helpful in order to get the most essential part
of material
When you write a summary, it should be brief and
concrete. The details answer the questions when, where,
what, who, why and how.
What I Can Do
Suppose your teacher asked you to report in front of the class
about the editorial article that was published in your school newspaper.
Apply your learned knowledge on summing up key ideas from the attached
article below. Write the summarized version of the text on your notebook.

Be a buddy not a bully
Queen Aizer B. Tagatac
The 2012 Indicators of School Crime and Safety shows that
adults were only notified in less than half or 40% of the 100% bullying
incidents. So, the fact that younger individuals do not ask help from
the adults is alarming.
Whether done in person or through technology, the effects of
bullying are similar. According to studies, bullied youngsters are more
likely to use alcohol and drugs, skip school, experience in-person
bullying, become unwilling to attend school, receive poor grades, have
lower self- esteem, have more health problems and worse part of it is
to commit suicide. Bullying happens everywhere but most reported
bullying happens in the campus buildings particularly during or after
school hours. It comes in different types so watch out if these happen
or happened to you.
Bullying comes in different forms. It can be verbal, physical
or social. It can also be encountered through cyber bullying.
Today, we, the millennial, possessed things such as
electronic gadgets which may expose us so social media sites that are
often used to hurt people through text messages or emails with
embarrassing pictures, videos, websites or fake profiles.
Life is indeed a matter of choice and now that we are fully
aware of what bullying is, how bullying happens as well as its effects,
18
the choice is ours to choose between creating a better world or creating
a chaotic world full of depressed bullied individuals with evil-dead
bullies.
As for me, being good individuals does not give us any harm
and choosing a bully-free world is the BEST path to take. So, be a
buddy not a bully.

What I Can Do On My Own
The next text that you are going to read is a fiction story that
contains essential elements like setting, characters, plot (series of events),
and theme. From the given details, compose a summary of the story. Your
output will be written on your notebook.
A Gift for Papa
It was one Saturday morning when I woke up with the sun
gazing at my face. On the right side of my bed rested the three eggs
I’ve gotten from a hidden place in the forest near our house. A lady
frog gave it to me after telling me that the eggs will give my family the
three greatest things we need.
I remembered that event as the celebration of the Father’s
Day. I thought of the three eggs as a special gift for my beloved
father. So, I rose up from my bed to greet papa. Everyone was there
at the dining table waiting for me. I greeted everyone “Good Morning”
directing my smile to my father. I told him the merriest greeting of
“Happy Father’s Day”. Father returned my smile and said, “Thank
you Precious! Come on wash your face and let’s eat.”
20
When I sat at the dining table, I gave the three eggs to my
father. “These are for you, Papa!” All of them laughed at me. “Those
are the same with chicken eggs but actually, they are from a frog. A
frog gave them to me!” “Oh no!
We can’t believe you!” All of them were amazed at the same
time. Then, I told them to open the eggs so we could see what
will happen next.
Father opened the three eggs one by one. Everybody opened
their eyes with awe on their lips. Ten gold coins, ten carabaos, and ten
hectares of rice fully cultivated appeared before our very eyes.
Everyone can’t believe what really happened. Even father got this day
very special and memorable. Thanks to the frog who gave these
fortunes to us!
