System Description
Air Intake System with Pulse Compressor Jebel Ali
During operation the compressor of the gas turbine takes air from the atmosphere via the filter
house, the evap cooler, the intake elbow, the silencer and the air intake duct into to the com-
pressor inlet cone. An air intake flap inside the intake bend allows the isolating of the combus-
tion air duct during air intake system outages to avoid ventilation and the entry of moisture into
the compressor.
• Weather hoods
• Bird Screens
• Coalescer
• Filter Modules
• Evap Cooler
• Roof
• Plenum
• Doors
• Hoists
Basically the filter house consists of the filter modules, which form the front wall of the filter
housing walls. On it’s back the housing is bolted to the silencer. A general staircase for all units
in combination with inconnecting walkways, platforms and ladders allow easily access for all
operation and maintenance facilities. For all lifting facilities an additional crane is installed too.
The control cabinets for the operation and monitoring of the air intake duct are placed on the
platforms of the filter house.
The air enters the filter house from the front side through the filter modules. All intake openings
of the modules are roofed over with weather hoods to protect them against rain. The plenum is
the space inside the house between the modules and the silencer. The filtered air passes the
evap cooler, the plenum and the silencer on its way to the compressor.

The weather hoods protect the air intake openings against rainfall via a roof consisting of trape-
zoidal sheet metal. Hollow section frames form the supporting structure. The entire structural
component is a flange construction to be bolted to the front of the intake opening.
Profile Bars
Metal Coalescer
Cassettes
The coalescer wall reduces the amount of moist in the combustion air by de-tearing the air flow.
It consists of the coalescer frames with profile bars and the metal coalescer cassettes. Each
cassette contains front and rear grids and the coalescer pad.
The coalescer is designed to remove humidity from air streams feeding a gas turbine. In addi-
tion the metal coalescer pads remove a broad range of water soluble contaminants, from the air
stream to protect the turbine against corrosive and damaging contaminants.

System Description
Air Intake System with Pulse Compressor Jebel Ali
A coalescing filter intercepts liquid aerosols and coalesce them into larger droplets which are
easily removed by gravity. These larger droplets pass through the filter medium and drain into
the coalescer housing sump. Here the droplets are collected and guided into the drainage sys-
tem of the plant.
Filter Frame
Grating
Each pulse filter module consists of the module frame and the pulse filters. Every pulse filter is
mounted to the module via a tripod holder with a central threaded rod each, a filter cap and a
wing grip to secure the assembly.
When the pressure drop of the filter cartridges reaches an adjustable value the installed pulse
system (see chap. 2.1.1.8) blows compressed air into the clean airside of the filter cartridges in
order to blow dust and dirt away.

System Description
Air Intake System with Pulse Compressor Jebel Ali
The plant is fitted with an automatic Dust Evac System with hoppers, a purge conveyor and a
downpipe with collecting bin. The fallout dust from the pulse system is collected and conveyed
into the bin. The conveying cycle starts automatically after the last pulse cycle, the conveying
time can be set in the menu of the pulse control system.
The evaporative pre-cooler reduces the air temperature of the combustion air of the turbine by
adiabatic humidification of the intake air. By decreasing the air temperature the density of the
intake air is increased and, therefore the mass flow of air through the turbine rises. A higher
combustion air mass flow through the turbine results in a higher amount of oxygen and leads to
an increase of the power output of the turbine.
Functional principle of the cooler is the distribution of water over aerated cooling pads. The
pads are arranged in small channels and passed by the intake air stream. Therefore the intake
air is humidified and cooled simultaneously. For further information please refer to the corre-
sponding separate manual of the evaporate cooler.
Downstream the evaporative cooler the air intake system is fitted with an additional weather
louver to reduce the amount of moisture in the combustion air.
The weather louvre is a droplet separator made of aluminum air guiding profiles of special de-
sign. Inside these profiles the intake air stream is accelerated and deflected in a manner that
makes it impossible for the entrained water droplets to follow due to their inertial force. There-
fore the droplets are torn off directly into the pockets of the profiles and then are drained in the
direction of the force of gravity.

In addition the house is fitted with implosion doors to prevent the construction from any sudden
pressure drops due to malfunction or sucked in foreign objects. Any opening of the counter-
weighted doors during operation is monitored and will generate an alarm.
2.1.1.3 Silencer
The silencer and the silencer casing are designed to ensure the specific noise limits. For this
purpose two rows of silencer baffles are installed inside the silencer casing. The casing itself
consists of double wall design with a acoustic insulating inlet and is bolted to the filter housing.
To meet sound insulation requirements the air intake system is carried out in a sandwich design
with interior insulation from the lower duct up to the silencer.
Downstream the silencer a trash screen made of stainless steel with 10 x 10 cm openings is
installed to protect the turbine against suction of foreign parts.

System Description
Air Intake System with Pulse Compressor Jebel Ali
For transport and installation requirements the intake bend and the vertical intake duct consist
of several sections:
• Intake Elbow
• Transition piece
• Expansion joint.
The intake elbow is bolted to the silencer casing. It consists of double wall design with a acous-
tic insulating. The general task is to guide and to turn the combustion air and to serve as a tran-
sition piece to meet the dimensions of the vertical duct.
The upper part of the vertical intake duct is bolted stress-free to the intake elbow via a bellow
expansion joint. All sections are flanged together and contain of double walled elements with a
acoustic insulating. The general task of the vertical air duct is to guide the combustion air and to
meet the dimensions of the air intake flap. For maintenance and repair facilities the last section
(transition piece) above the air intake flap is fitted with a manhole accessible via the service
platform of the flap drive.
For acoustical separation between the air intake duct and the filter house the vertical intake duct
is fitted with air flexible expansion joint. Additional sound insulation panels are mounted around
the expansion joint to meet the required sound insulation requirements.

System Description
Air Intake System with Pulse Compressor Jebel Ali
The air intake flap is an isolating device for the compressor inlet for the full cross section of the
duct. If the gas turbine is out of operation the air intake flap is closed to prevent ventilation and
therefore the entry of moisture into the compressor inlet during air intake system outages. In
addition, the compressor inlet is fitted with dehumidifier connectors to allow the scouring of the
turbine with dry air during a stand still (air dryer by others).
The shut-off-flap consists of a blade segment arranged upstream the compressor in the airflow
of the duct. In the “closed”-position the damper blade shuts the duct by swiveling from vertical to
horizontal position. Here the damper is sealed by means of a stainless steal lip opposite of the
intake duct. To avoid corrosion, the companion part of the duct is also equipped with a stainless
steel plate.
The position of the air intake flap is monitored via limit switches. The control of the flap drive is
carried out by the gas turbine control system.
The task of air intake duct is the low-less guiding of the combustion air into the compressor
without any turbulence. Therefore it is fitted with a inner inlet cone with a shaft protection for the
turbine shaft and a special designed outer inlet cone and a bell mouth. The duct is fastened to
the flange of the compressor by means of holding-down bolts. A special seal (Burgmann) is in-
stalled between the gas turbine and the outer cone.
Inside the inlet cone the driving shaft proceeds from the turbine to the generator. For mainte-
nance and service facilities the section is fitted with an access door. With a suitable mainte-
nance platform it is possible to maintain all the supply lines, overflow-oil lines and measuring
devices.
The air intake duct is fitted with a blade cleaning system. A special loop line in front of the com-
pressor inlet is fitted with adjustable nozzles for wet-cleaning the compressor blades (supply
with detergent fluid by others).
For transport and installation requirements the air intake duct consists of two sections:
• Upper Section
• Lower Section
The lower section has to be fastened to the foundation. It contains the connections for the air
dryer, the detergent for the blade cleaning system and the drainpipe.

System Description
Air Intake System with Pulse Compressor Jebel Ali
The combustion air of the gas turbine is filtered in the pulse filter elements of the filter house.
During operation the dust accumulation of the filter elements and therefore their pressure drop
rises gradually. The pulse system monitors the pressure drop and starts an automatic pulse
cleaning cycle, if the pressure drop rises above a set value (for settings see chapter 2.4.3.6).

The pulse system consists of 16 headers and 196 pulse valves. Fourteen (or seven) solenoid
pulse valves (2,5”) are screwed directly into every header. The outlets of the pulse valves are
connected with blowpipes which are situated on the clean airside of the filter cartridges and are
equipped with a blow out nozzle at the center of each cartridge.

If the pressure loss of the filter cartridges has reached the set value, the solenoid pulse valves
open one by one automatically for the pre-set pulse time, so that the compressed air pulse
reaches – via the blowpipe opening (nozzle) - the clean airside of the filter cartridges.

The air pulse generates a shock wave inside the corresponding filter cartridges, so that the ad-
herent dust particle cake on the outside of these elements will be blown off in pieces and rinse
downwards the filter wall.
If the measured pressure loss over the filter cartridges falls short of the set point for pulse stop,
the actual pulse cycle is finished and the pulse cleaning stops.

System Description
Air Intake System with Pulse Compressor Jebel Ali
The control cabinet for the pulse system mainly consists of the RM-400 C control unit , the pulse
system pressure transmitter, the connecting bus modules on the headers and the flow monitor
in the main pulse air supply line.
If the pressure transmitter detects that the pulse filter pressure drop exceeds the set value, a
pulse cycle is started automatically until the pressure drop falls short of the set point for system
stop.
The bus modules RM-V16 on the headers trigger the solenoid valves in accordance to the set
pulse width and interval time. A common serial IMC bus connects the bus modules in daisy
chain with one another and the RM-400 C controller.
Header Solenoids
The control unit monitors the correct functioning of the pulse solenoid valves via the resulting air
flow variations in the main feeding line of the filter house. A missing air flow after triggering the
solenoid valve indicates a defective valve or stuck diaphragm, while a remaining air flow after
closing a solenoid is an indication for a leak in the valve seat or the diaphragm. In addition the
current through the valve is monitored by the corresponding bus module (for settings see chap-
ter 2.3.4.2.3).
In case of failures the corresponding valve and the detected failure is indicated on the text dis-
play. For details see chapter 2.3.4.2.2.
If the local humidity will increase about a set value (see chapter 2.3.4.3.1) the dust cake on the
filter cartridges can get more stuck and may bake on the filter surface after drying. Therefore the
system is fitted with an additional humidity sensor to release a cleaning cycle under these
weather conditions, even if the filter pressure drop is below the set value.

System Description
Air Intake System with Pulse Compressor Jebel Ali
Recent experience shows that the average pressure drop of filters left continuously in automatic
cleaning cycle will decrease in comparison to those who don’t. .Therefore the filter cartridges
will be pulsed automatically once a day if GT is down and power of control cabinets remains
switched on.
The supply of the pulse system with compressed air is realized by a compressor skid. The out-
put air pressure is monitored via a JUMO pressure controller. For details refer to the ATLAS
COPCO documentation in chapter 4.

System Task
Evaporative coolers serve to cool gas turbine intake air by means of adding moisture to the air flow.
The objective of this cooling process is to increase gas turbine performance. This increase in output
results from the effect of increasing the density of the air at lower temperatures, and the related lar-
ger mass flow rate.
The cooler module comprise a stainless-steel frame which contains the coolant medium. Sprinkling
and wetting of the cooler modules is effected by introducing water from above. The air flows side-
ways through the cooler module. It receives moisture and is cooled at the large surface owing to the
evaporating water.
A supplementary water supply skid comprising two pumps (MBL40AP001, MBL40AP002) is located
near the filter compartment. This skid serves to supply water to the cooler modules, and to accom-
modate non-evaporated water which is returned from the cooler modules. Water tanks
(MBL40BB001 – MBL40BB003) are located below the evaporative cooler pads in the filter house.
A pressure transmitter (MBL40CP001 501) is used to monitor the operation of an evaporative cooler
pump (dry run protection). C
Likewise integrated is a conductivity measuring system (MBL40CQ101 501) used to monitor the in-
creasing mineral concentration in the circulating water. If the conductivity exceeds a specified value,
the concentrated water is discharged (blow down) via a motor valve (MBL40AA002).
Fresh water is fed into the system via motor valve (MBL40AA001), as needed.
Chemicals (e.g. H2O2) to eliminate algae growth are added via a dosing system with the manual dos-
ing pump (MBL40AP003).
A manual sample point is provided in the discharge-line of evaporative cooler pumps for on-line
sampling analysers.
System Design
The module is designed for use with Siemens Model SGT5-4000F (4) gas turbines, which have cor-
responding air intake parameters (mass flows, temperatures and pressures) and the required noise
control requirements.
The module functions together with the air intake system and the demineralised raw water supply C
system. For information about the quality of demineralised raw water see Appendix II.

2 Mode of Operation
Sufficient water must be stored in the tank to allow sufficient sprinkling of the media.
At ambient temperatures below 5°C (during winter time) the system has to be switched off com-
pletely and shall be secured in accordance with the supplier Operation and Maintenance Instruction.
Startup
The module can be put into operation either locally at the control cabinet or centrally from the power
plant control room.
The pump is started. There must be sufficient water stored in the tank to allow the sprinkling function
to operate. If this condition is not signalled by the upper level meter, the solenoid valve opens the
water feed line. Once the required water level has been reached, the pump is started.
Shutdown
The module can be shut down either locally at the control cabinet or centrally from the power plant
control room.
The water feed valve as well as the concentrated water discharge valve are in the closed position.

VAE267 Page 6
The increasing concentration of minerals in the circulating water is monitored by means of a conduc-
tivity measuring system. If the measured ACTUAL conductivity exceeds the set SETPOINT conduc-
tivity (450 – 550 µS/cm), the concentrated water discharge valve (demineralizing) is opened. In order
to prevent constant actuation of this valve, a hysteresis is programmed. The valve opens at a certain
value and closes at another certain value. During interim periods, it always remains at the last
switching status position.
In case the evaporative cooler media starts to home algaes, which depends on the environmental
conditions and does not appear in all cases, a flange connection with a manual injection pump
(MBL40AP003) can be used to inject a biozid (e.g. H2O2 from a 30l storage tank). After dosing, the
result should be checked after one day and if necessary the procedure can be repeated. The initial
intervals between dosing should be 1 week.
