Reading Section
The following text is for questions 16 to 19.
Bats are members of the order Chiroptera meaning “hand-wing”. Like all mammals, bats have warm blood and
hair. They bear live young and nurse them with milk. Their wings are supported by long finger bones covered with two
thin layers of skin, like the webbing between your thumb and first finger. This skin covering extends to the legs and, is
some species, between the legs to the tail. Bats can use the wing and tail membranes to scoop insects.
Bats have small, movable thumbs on the top of their wings for grasping and climbing. Their back feet are use for
hanging.
Less than 1/10 of 1 percent of all bats are believed to carry rabies. Infected bats are rarely aggresive and soon die
of the disease. Nonetheless, always avoid contact with any bat. If you are bitten or strached by a bat, or any other wild
animal, or have any contact with the animal’s saliva, report it to your doctor and local health authority immediately.
Capture the bat, if possible.

Okutama, Japan (CNN). Four years ago, Naoko and Takayuki were given a house. For free. It’s a spacious, two-
storey home nestled amid trees on a winding country road in the small town of Okutama, in Tokyo Prefecture. Before
moving, the couple and their childern-two teenegers and a five-year-old were all living with Naoko’s parents.
“We had to do a lot of repair work (on our new home), but we’d always wanted to live in the countryside and
have a big garden,” said Naoko, 45.
A free house may sound like a scam. But Japan faces an unusual property problem: it has more homes than
people to live in them.
In 2013, there were 61 million houses and 52 million households, according to the Japan Policy Forum, and
the situation is poised to get worse.
Japan’s population is expected to decline from 127 million to about 88 million by 2065, according to the
National Institute of Population and Social Security, meaning even fewer people will need houses. As young people
leave rural areas for city jobs, Japan’s countryside has become haunted by deserted “ghost” houses, known as “akiya”.
It is predicted that by 2040, nearly 900 towns and villages across Japan will no longer exist-and Okutama is
one of them. In that context, giving away property is a bid of survival.
“In 2014, we discovered that Okutama was one of three Tokyo (prefecture) towns expected to vanish by
2014,” says Kazutaka Nijima, an official with the Okutama Youth Revitalization (OYR) departement, a goverment body
set up to repopulate the town.

Sandstorms occur when winds strengthen to the point where they are able to lift grains of sand off the ground
and blow them through the air. They tend to happen most frequently in sandy areas, such as deserts. For example,
sandstroms are quite common in the Sahara Desert.
Similar stroms can arise in many areas around the world. When the top layer of soil consists primarily of dirt and
rock rather than sand, these stroms are usually called dust stroms. Some people use the terms interchangeably,
although one term or the other is usually more correct depending upon what type of particle is being blown about the
wind.
For example, many dry, flat areas of the United States, such as Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and
Arizona, experience dust storms and sandstorms frequently, especially during periods of drought. Moisture tends to
hod particles to the ground, so dry conditions often lead to particles being picked up more easily by the wind.
Areas of China, Mongolia, Africa, and the Middle East also often see these tyoes of stroms. Sandtorms and dust
storms that result from microbursts or downbursts from thunderstorm cells are often known by a special name:
haboob. This name comes from the Arabic word habb, which means “wind”.
Sandstorms can arise quickly and without much warning. Wind speeds as low as 25 miles per hour can cause
sandstorms, so it doesn’t take hurricaneforce winds to get sand particles moving through the air. The faster the wind
blows, the higher and farther the particles can be blown.
Sandstorms can be very dangerous. Since they can reduce visibility to near zero, sandstorms make travelling
difficult. Blowing sand and dust particles can also find their way into the tiniest cracks and crevices in machinery,
causing frequent mechanical breakdowns.
Sandstorms can also pose a variety of health problems, since sand and dust flying through the air can find its way
into your eyes, nose, mouth, and lungs. During a sandstorms, people should wear some type of mask that will filter
out these particles.

34. What should we do after understanding the passage?
A. Building a good house.

...” (in the line 18).
The underlined word can be replaced with ....
A. points
B. gaps
C. flows
D. blocks

A green flash, which occurs more commonly at sunset -but can also occur at sunrise-is a phenomenon in
which part of the sun can be observed suddenly and briefly changing color. It usually lasts only a second or two-which
is why it is referred a flash-as the sun changes from red or orange at sunset, for example.
The green flash is viewable because refraction bends the light of the sun. The atmosphere acts as a weak
prism, which separates light into various colors. When the sun's disk is fully visible above the horizon, the different
colors of light rays overlap to an extent where each individual color can't be seen by the naked eye.
When the sun starts to dip below the horizon, the colors of the spectrum disappear one at a time, starting
with those with the longest wavelengths to those with the shortest. At sunrise, the process is reversed, and a green
flash may occur as the top of the sun peeks above the horizon.
It is a primarily a green flash because more green light gets through and therefore is more clearly seen.
Sometimes, when the air is especially clear, enough of the blue or violet light rays make it through the atmosphere,
causing a blue flash to be visible. However, green is the most common hue reported and captured in photos.

The following text is for questions 34 to 36.
This large waterbird is unmistakable due to its unique ‘shoe-shaped’ bill which gives it an almost prehistoric
appearance – reminding us of birds’ dinosaur ancestry.
Found in nine countries across Africa the species has a large range, but exists in small localized populations
concentrated around swamps and wetlands. Individuals are highly solitary – often the male and female in a breeding
pair prefer to occupy different ends of their shared territory.
The nest is large and flattened, built amid swamp grasses or sedges and usually on a mound of floating
vegetation or a small island. The construction can be up to three meters wide. Although a clutch of up to three dull,
chalky-white eggs is laid, typically only one nestling survives due to inter-sibling rivalry, where the larger (generally
first born) chick will out-compete and/or kill its siblings. The breeding season varies, being dependent on Africa’s
seasonal flood cycle.
The Shoebill is undergoing a continuing decline owing to the effects of habitat destruction and degradation,
pollution, nest disturbance, hunting, and capture for the live bird trade. The global population is currently estimated at
between 5,000-8,000 birds and the species is classed as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.
This species’ inhabit wetland habitat, preferring large, seasonally flooded marshes with dense vegetation and
areas of floating vegetation often formed by papyrus. They are highly solitary and they forage by ‘walking slowly’ or
standing. Large fish such as lungfish are the preferred prey item, but it will feed on a variety of aquatic animals
including amphibians, water snakes, young crocodiles, as well as rodents and waterfowl chicks.
