Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this course, student teachers will be able to:

1. explain children literacy and language development in ESL learners.(C6, A4, P2,
PLO3, CTPS3)
2. evaluate the roles of teachers and family in developing literacy. (C5, PLO3, CTPS2)
3. create age-appropriate activities with materials developed for language learning, in
groups. (C6, P7, PLO4, PLO5, CS3, TS1)
4. design assessment tools to evaluate the development of language literacy. (C6,
PLO2, PLO3, CTPS5)
5. elaborate on the significance of understanding literacy to the teaching of language in
the primary ESL classroom. (C6, A2, PLO3, PLO6, CTPS5, LL2)

This coursework project is evaluating learning outcomes 3, 4 and 5

COURSEWORK OBJECTIVES:

The coursework will enable student teachers to:

1. review, analyse, evaluate and explain learning theories, basic concepts and elements
of children literacy development in the teaching and learning process with reference
to current resources in the form of a critical review essay.
2. create language learning materials with corresponding activities for a primary
English language class
3. organise a group presentation to explain and present the materials and activities
created.

4. Produce an assessment tool which includes test items and rubrics, based on a table
of specifications for a primary English language class.

Task 1: Acaemic Essay (20%) Individual – 800 words

Literacy is essential to developing a strong sense of well-being


and citizenship. Children who have developed strong reading
skills perform better in school and have a healthier self-image.
They become lifelong learners and sought-after employees…

Write an essay based on the statement above.

1. This is an individual task. Write an 800-word critical review of the task given.
2. The essay must include:
• suitable children literacy and language development
researches/articles in ESL learners principles.
• Suggest how understanding literacy makes an impact towards
language teaching in primary ESL classroom.
3. Appropriate academic language should be used with a cohesive and coherent
organisation.
4. Evidence of appropriate and credible references to related literature should be
provided (academic articles, syllabus, etc).
5. Upload the completed essay.
6. Create a file folder that contains all the information and transfer it to the class
Google drive.

Marking criteria

The assignment will be marked against the marking criteria given.

Task 2a: Age- Appropriate Activities : Materials Production (20%)

All children can develop a strong foundation for literacy and reading
development when they are given opportunities to engage in purposeful,
meaningful language and early print activities. Effective early literacy
instruction provides preschool children with developmentally appropriate
settings, materials, experiences, and social support that encourage early forms
of reading and writing to flourish and develop into conventional literacy...

Based on the above statement, in groups of not more than 3 members:

1. Choose a suitable theme and skills based on the DSKP English Language Syllabus.
Produce materials which are appropriate for the targeted age that integrates
relevant children and literacy elements with other online sources -– (Note: Students
MUST refer to the Primary Year 1 to 6 English Language DSKP in alignment
withTSLB3073 as KPPB requirement. )
2. The materials production must include a manual/procedure with clear explanation and
another necessary teacher’s guide.
3. Upload the materials you have created.
4. Create a file folder that contains all the information and upload it to the class Google
drive.

Marking criteria

The assignment will be marked against the marking criteria given.

Task 2b: Group presentation (30 minutes) (10%)

Application of the Material Production created in Task 2a, based on the appropriate age
and topics in Primary English Language Year 1 to 6 DSKP.

1. Work in Groups of 3
2. Conduct a 30-minute presentation which uses the materials production created.
3. Each group member has to conduct a lesson presentation using the age appropriate
activities created.
4. Each group member has to conduct a lesson presentation on a different aspect or
way of using the materials.
5. Video record the lesson presentation.
6. Upload all the visual and audio materials used in the production.
7. Create a file folder that contains all the information and transfer it to the class Google
drive.

Marking criteria

The assignment will be marked against the marking criteria given.

Task 3: Designing Assessment Tool : Individual work (20%)

Based on the depiction given, each student teacher must:


1. Individually, design and produce an assessment tool to evaluate the development of
language literacy that contain test items and rubrics to assess any receptive and
productive skills, grammar and vocabulary for your class. Your assessment tool can
be based on the Material Production on Task 2a.
2. In your assessment kit, you should describe clearly the following elements :
- the skill or content to be tested
- table of specification
- item types and tasks
- how the test will be scored and reported to students.

3. Individually, student teacher must upload a folder which contains the following :
- Clear images/ complete materials of the assessment tool
- Any audio-visual materials

Marking criteria

The assignment will be marked against the marking criteria given.

A GOOD ASSIGNMENT SHOULD SHOW:

1. a good understanding of the task


2. originality in presentation
3. appropriate language use
