BELT DRIVE
1. A belt is a looped strip of flexible material, used to
mechanically link two or more rotating shafts.
2. They may be used as a source of motion, to efficiently
transmit power, or to track relative movement.
3. Belts are looped over pulleys.
4. In a two pulley system, the belt can either drive the
pulleys in the same direction, or the belt may be
crossed, so that the direction of the shafts is opposite.
The amount of power transmitted depends
upon the following factors:
The velocity of the belt.
The tension under which the belt is placed on
the pulleys.
The arc of contact between the belt and the
smaller pulley.
The conditions under which the belt is used.

TYPES OF BELTS
1. Flat Belt
Mostly used in the factories and workshops, where a moderate
amount of power is to be transmitted, from one pulley to another
when the two pulleys are not more than 8 meters apart.
2. V-belt
The V-belt is mostly used in the factories and workshops, where a
great amount of power is to be transmitted, from one pulley to
another, when the two pulleys are very near to each other.
3. Circular belt or rope
The circular belt rope is mostly used in the factories and workshops,
where a great amount of power is to be transmitted, from one pulley
to another, when the two pulleys are more than 8 meters apart.

MATERIAL USED FOR BELTS
The material used for belts and ropes must be
strong, flexible, and durable.
It must have a high coefficient of friction.
The belts, according to the material used, are
classified as follows :
Leather Belts
Cotton or fabric belts
Rubber belt
Balata belts
ADVANTAGES OF BELT DRIVE
They are simple.
They are lubrication-free.
They require only low maintenance.
DISADVANTAGES OF BELT DRIVE
Speed is limited to usually 7000 feet per minute (35 meters per
second).
Power transmission is limited to 370 kilowatts (500 horsepower).
PULLEYS
The pulleys are used to transmit power form
one shaft to another by means of flat belts, V-
belts or ropes.
The pulleys may be made of cast steel or
pressed steel, wood and paper.
The cast materials should have good friction
wear characteristics.
The pulleys made of pressed steel are lighter
than cast pulleys, but in many cases they have
lower friction and may produce excessive wear.
CHAIN DRIVE
Chain drive is a way of transmitting mechanical power from one place
to another.
It is often used to convey power to the wheels of a vehicle, particularly
bicycles and motorcycles.
It is also used in a wide variety of machines besides vehicles.
These wheels have projecting teeth of special profile and fit into the
corresponding recesses in the links of the chain.
The toothed wheels are known as Sprocket wheels or simply sprockets.
Most often, the power is conveyed by a roller chain, known as the drive
chain, passing over a sprocket gear, with the teeth of the gear meshing
with the holes in the links of the chain.
The gear is turned, and this pulls the chain putting mechanical force
into the system.
