“EXCELLENCE IS OUR BUSINESS AND OUR COMMITMENT”
FOUNDATIONS OF SHORTHAND
Week 2
Topic: Efficient use of steno pad; The Concept of “you right what you hear”,
Learning Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the learners should be able to:
1. Demostrate the efficient use of steno pad
2. Demonstrate the concept of writing strokes by its sound.
I. LESSON DISCUSSION
Effiecient Use of Steno Pad.Shorthand notebook are divided into two columns to help the note-taker to move
quickly. If you write using the whole line, from far left to the right side of the page, it takes considerably more
time-twice the time, in fact than it takes to bring ypu pen back from the middle line to the left. The middle line
helps to keep your hand “travelling” unnecessarily across the page.
Notebook Management
1. Use a two-column steno pad. This type of pad is best for writing shorthand
2. Use one column at a time. In order to minimize wasted return writing motions, you should write your
shorthand notes in one column at atime.
3. Use one side of paper. In order to avoid wasting time turning pages, you should write on one side of the
page only. When you reach the end of the notebook, turn it aroung and proceed to write on the back at
all pages.
4. Date the notes. Each day you use your steno pad, write the current date first. This will avoid much
confusion later.
5. Separate your notes. Draw a line across the column to clearly indicate the separation between the letters
or other notes.
6. Maintain good posture. You will have greatest writing speed when your arms are fully supported by the
writing surface. Use your free hand to steady the notebook. Have your steno pad opened flat. When
turning the pages, do not waste time tucking the used pages underneath the pad.
7. Select the right pen. You should select your writing instrument with care. Pencils should definitely be
avoided. The ideal pen allows the ink to flow freely. It writes a relatively fine line with a minimum of
friction on the paper. The ink should be dark enough to be clearly legible.
The Concept of “write what you hear”
In Shorthand silent letters are omitted and other letters may have different sounds. The following are some
words with their shorthand spelling and explanation of the sounds.
Words Sounds Explanation
name nam e is silent
right Rit gh is silent
navy nave y sounds like e
stay Sta y is silent
face fas c sound like s
phone fon ph sound like f
snow sno w is silent
safe saf e is silent
age Aj g sounds like j
home hom e is silent
lead led a is not heard
large larj g sound like j
copy kope c sound like k; y like e
Shorthand is written by sound; thus name is written as nam, safe is written as saf. Since we are learning short
hand to save time in writing. It is necessary to ignore those letter that aren’t pronounce.
