B. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is to help advanced students (IELTS bands 6.0 – 6.5) of English
achieve an IELTS Band Score of 7.0+. All the parts of the IELTS Speaking
Test are subsequently taught during the course. It includes 13 lessons, which
are broken down into two separate sections with one teacher in charge of
Section 1 and one teacher in charge of Section 2.

The first section of the course is about Part 1 and Part 2 of the IELTS
Speaking Test, while Section 2 focuses on Part 2 and Part 3 of the test only.
There is a final speaking test at the end of each section; the final speaking
test of Section 1 is in Lesson 6, and that of Section 2 is in Lesson 7.
Instructions on how to conduct the two speaking tests are given in each
corresponding lesson. See the syllabus of each section for more details.

Important notice: The students’ book does not have the optional
material content. To prepare additional learning materials for students,
you can request RES authorised staff to print out these pages from this
book for each lesson, and you can give these printouts to your
students.

C. CLASS PROCEDURES

1. Homework Check (10 minutes)

- Have students review the homework’s vocabulary section. Those who have
already done their homework can compare and discuss their answers.
- Walk around the class and offer assistance where necessary.
- Provide students with the correct answers on the white board.
- Pick 5 – 10 of the most important/useful words for students to learn and
encourage them to remember their other forms using the following table
on the board:

2. Last Lesson Review

- Teachers can use the set of quick check-up questions from the previous
lessons to check if students remember old knowledge and skills. Teachers
can also come up with their own questions to help students recall past
lessons.

3. Speaking

- Help students to do the language focus section in the book.

- Introduce the speaking topic and objectives of the lesson.
- Explain theories and provide tips where applicable.
- Have students practice speaking, give feedback and provide sample
answers.

3.1. Speaking Practice:

- Distribute students’ peer checklists and explain to students what they need
to focus on during their practice.
- Have students practice speaking in groups/pairs.
- Invite 3 students to come forward and interview them while the others
observe and write down their comments. Interview time is 3 – 5 minutes
for each student.
- Pick a student to comment on his/her classmate’s performance. Maximum
comment time is 2-3 minutes.
- Give feedback on all students’ speeches: maximum 5 minutes for the
interviewee, and up to 2 minutes for the commenting student.
- When giving feedback to the interviewee, use the following form on the
board to help students follow the comments more easily.

- Teachers should focus on one particular area and give extended advice to
the interviewee on how they can improve their score in this respect.
- Finally, teachers give students a sample answer and analyse it.

3.2. Post-practice Review

- Ask to see if students understand the content and purpose of the practice, or
give them some questions to check understanding.
- Summarize the theories and skills in the lesson on the board. Elicit answers
from students as much as possible.
- Summarize common mistakes and how to fix them.

4. Lesson Review

- Spend 5-10 minutes helping students to look back at the whole lesson.
- Summarize important knowledge and skills on the board by asking students
questions from the quick check-up list, or by using your own questions.
- Students should also be encouraged to ask questions during the review.
- If there are any parts that the students are unclear about, or questions that
the students want to clarify, please note them down and give the answers
in the next lesson. This is very important; all RES teachers are expected
to do it. In case the questions are simple, you can give the students the
answers immediately.

5. Giving Homework

- While you are supposed to strictly follow the content of the book, it is not
compulsory to cover everything in the book. Remaining parts of a lesson
can be used as homework. Indicate which parts the students should do as
their homework.
- Emphasize to students the need to complete the vocabulary homework
regularly, because it will be useful for speaking in the following lesson.

TEACHERS’ NOTES
 RES encourages both teachers and students to focus more on quality than
on quantity. Students need to be able to use what they’ve learnt, not try to
take in too much at the same time.
 Students are encouraged to come to the school early (1~3 hours) in order to
review old lessons and do their homework in the self-study room.
Assistance is available from a tutor appointed by RES.
 Please remind students to always review what they’ve learnt and pay
attention to English use in their daily activities.
 We recommend the rule 1:2:1, which means 1 hour for reviewing past
lessons and taking notes on confusing points to ask teachers later, 2
hours for homework and 1 hour for extensive English reading or listening
(but try to choose materials close to the topics in class).
 In the first lesson, following the ice-breaking activity, please remember to
spend 15-20 minutes introducing to students the objectives and syllabus
of the course. Forgetting this part may cause students to have inaccurate
ideas about what they will learn, which can also affect their study plans.

LESSON 1 – YOUR LIFE

A. IELTS SPEAKING INTRODUCTION

The IELTS Speaking test lasts between 11 and 14 minutes and consists of
three parts. The exam is recorded.

Part Task type

1 Candidates are asked questions about a variety of

familiar topics such as their family, their job/studies or
their interests. Part 1 lasts 4 to 5 minutes.

2 Candidates talk about a given topic for 1 to 2 minutes.

They are given one minute to read the question
carefully, think about the topic and make notes.

3 Candidates have a discussion with the examiner linked

to the topic in Part 2. Part 3 lasts 4 to 5 minutes.

The examiner assesses students’ ability to communicate effectively in

English, and specifically assesses:

 Fluency and coherence: how well they speak without hesitating and
the organization of their answers
 Lexical resource: the range of vocabulary they use
 Grammatical range and accuracy: the range of grammar they use,
for example, the range of structures and complex sentences using
connecting words like because, for instance, and so, but, and so on.
 Pronunciation: how clear and intelligible they are when they speak

“I went to Masonville Mall 3 months ago. I went over there because I had to do some
shopping. I went to the mall with my cousins. We all had to do some shopping for the
upcoming wedding of a friend, so we all decided to go to the mall.

The mall was extraordinary. I was really impressed by the decoration of the mall. I
had a limited budget, and I had decided that I would spend only $500 on the clothes,
but things were so good that I had to borrow some money from my cousin and then I
bought other stuff.

The best thing about the mall was that the staff over there were very friendly. I have
visited a lot malls around the world, but I have never seen such good customer
service. After doing all the shopping we were so exhausted that we could not even
walk a step. I came up with the idea of eating food, so we went to the food court
which was located in the mall. It was a huge food court and almost everything was
available over there. I had New York Fries and a burger.

I always miss the mall a lot as the trip was fantastic. I sometimes think of going there
again, but these days I am kind of busy, so I do not find the time to go over there.
But, I am planning a visit to the same mall sometime around next month.”

If you want your talk to be coherent, convincing, and engaging, it is important that
you link your ideas well. There are a number of ways in which you can link ideas, for
example:
 using conjunctions like: and, but, so,…
 emphasising ideas
 repeating key words or phrases
 using pronouns to refer to ideas
 using synonyms when repeating ideas
However, do not overuse linking words in your talk.
Memorising them and using them too often will make your talk sound unnatural and
will not give you a better mark in the test.

Sometimes, the task card in Part 2 will have a future focus, and you will have to imagine
a situation or scenario in the future. Make sure you can use various future forms to
answer correctly.
The first type of these questions usually includes the words ‘want to’ to ‘would like to’ to
ask about a future object or situation.
The second type of future focus questions uses words such as ‘dream’, ‘perfect’, or
‘ideal’ to ask you to speculate and imagine a perfect scenario.
For both types of questions, using ‘would + base verb’ is the best way to answer.
Remember, in speaking, this is often contracted to ’’d + base verb’.

Brief introduction – where it is

I’m going to tell you about why I’d like to visit New Orleans – that’s my dream holiday
destination. I’ve travelled quite a lot and visited many countries but I’ve never been
to the States and I really do want to go there one day.
How I would go there
I’m not quite sure how I would go there. I guess I’d have to fly but it’s also possible I
suppose that I might do a grand tour of the US. Fly into one of the major cities like
LA or New York and cross the country on the Greyhound buses to see something of
the interior. I’ve always thought that travelling by coach is a more interesting way to
travel as you get to see so much more and don’t spend all your time in city centres
and airports. I guess that’s particularly true in the States with their great Highway
system – route 66 and all that.
Who I would travel with
I’d probably choose to travel by myself. I’m a very bad tourist and don’t enjoy being
in groups at all. I much prefer to do my own thing, get off the beaten track and
just wander around getting the feel for the place I’m in. I do enjoy museums and so
forth, but I think that you can learn as much by sitting in a cafe watching the world go
by. It’s easier to do that on your own I think.
Why I would go there
Why New Orleans? Well, I’m a huge fan of jazz and that’s where it all started and I’d
love to visit some of the old bars where the greats used to play. I also understand
that it’s a really lively place with a very active street culture and those are the sorts of
places I like to go. The only downside I suppose is that it was devastated of course
by Hurricane Katrina and I know it’s still suffering.

Sometimes, the task card in Part 2 will have a future focus, and you will have to imagine a

situation or scenario in the future. Make sure you can use various future forms to answer

The first type of these questions usually includes the words ‘want to’ or ’would like to’ to ask
about a future object or situation.
The second type of future focus questions uses words such as ‘dream’, ’perfect’, or ’ideal’
to ask you to speculate and imagine a perfect scenario.
For both types of questions, using ‘would + base verb’ is the best way to answer.
Remember, in speaking, this is often contracted to ’’d + base verb’.

LESSON 6 – SPEAKING TEST: PARTS 1 & 2

A. SPEAKING TEST
The speaking test includes Part 1 and Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking Test. Use
the 10 question sets provided on the next pages for your preparation. You can
also prepare your own lists of questions for the students, but make sure that they
are in the IELTS Speaking format. Ask the staff in the materials dept. for some
print-outs, including the question sets and your speaking feedback sheets when
necessary.

Guidance on conducting the speaking test

 Call each student in turn and conduct the individual test following the
sequence of the IELTS Speaking Test (Part 1 – 4-5 minutes, Part 2 – 3-4
minutes, and Part 3 – 4-5 minutes).
 During the speaking test, the student can only be given a topic card in Part 2
to make notes and prepare for the talk. At no time can they read the other
questions in Part 1 and Part 3.
 Each student has one minute to prepare for their Part 2 talk (ask him/her to
make notes on a piece of paper).

teaching folder. RES staff need these in order to inform the students’
parents of their progress.

It is not always the case that a university degree is the best qualification in the world of finance.

B. COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is to help advanced students (IELTS bands 6.0 – 6.5) of English
achieve an IELTS Band Score of 7.0+. All the parts of the IELTS Speaking
Test are subsequently taught during the course. It includes 13 lessons, which
are broken down into two separate sections with one teacher in charge of
Section 1 and one teacher in charge of Section 2.

The first section of the course is about Part 1 and Part 2 of the IELTS
Speaking Test while Section 2 focuses on Part 2 and Part 3 of the test only.
There is a final speaking test at the end of each section; the final speaking
test of Section 1 is in Lesson 6, and that of Section 2 is in Lesson 7.
Instructions on how to conduct the two speaking tests are given in each
corresponding lesson. See the syllabus of each section for more details.

Important notice: The students’ book does not have the optional
material content. To prepare additional learning materials for students,
you can request RES authorised staff to print out these pages from this
book for each lesson, and you can give these printouts to your
students.

C. CLASS PROCEDURES

1. Homework Check (10 minutes)

- Have students review the homework’s vocabulary section. Those who have
already done their homework can compare and discuss their answers.
- Walk around the class and offer assistance where necessary.
- Provide students with the correct answers on the white board.
- Pick 5 – 10 of the most important/useful words for students to learn and
encourage them to remember their other forms using the following table
on the board:

lessons to check if students remember old knowledge and skills. Teachers

3. Speaking

- Help students to do the language focus section in the book.

- Introduce the speaking topic and objectives of the lesson.
- Explain theories and provide tips where applicable.
- Have students practice speaking, give feedback and provide sample
answers.

3.1. Speaking Practice:

- Distribute students’ peer checklists and explain to students what they need
to focus on during their practice.
- Have students practice speaking in groups/pairs.
- Invite 3 students to come forward and interview them while the others
observe and write down their comments. Interview time is 3 – 5 minutes
for each student.
- Pick a student to comment on his/her classmate’s performance. Maximum
comment time is 2-3 minutes.
- Give feedback on all students’ speeches: maximum 5 minutes for the
interviewee, and up to 2 minutes for the commenting student.
- When giving feedback to the interviewee, use the following form on the
board to help students follow the comments more easily.

- Teachers should focus on one particular area and give extended advice to
the interviewee on how they can improve their score in this respect.

3.2. Post-practice Review

- Summarize the theories and skills in the lesson on the board. Elicit answers
from students as much as possible.

4. Lesson Review

- Spend 5-10 minutes helping students to look back at the whole lesson.
- Summarize important knowledge and skills on the board by asking students
questions from the quick check-up list, or by using your own questions.
- Students should also be encouraged to ask questions during the review.
- If there are any parts that the students are unclear about, or questions that
students want to clarify, please note them down and give the answers in
the next lesson. This is very important; all RES teachers are expected to
do it. In case the questions are simple, you can give the students the
answers immediately.

5. Giving Homework

- While you are supposed to strictly follow the content of the book, it is not
compulsory to cover everything in the book. Remaining parts of a lesson
can be used as homework. Indicate which parts the students should do as
their homework.
- Emphasize to students the need to complete the vocabulary homework
regularly, because it will be useful for speaking in the following lesson.

TEACHERS’ NOTES
 RES encourages both teachers and students to focus more on quality than
on quantity. Students need to be able to use what they’ve learnt, not try to
take in too much at the same time.
 Students are encouraged to come to the school early (1~3 hours) in order to
review old lessons and do their homework in the self-study room.
Assistance is available from a tutor appointed by RES.
 Please remind students to always review what they’ve learnt and pay
attention to English use in their daily activities.
 We recommend the rule 1:2:1, which means 1 hour for reviewing past
lessons and taking notes on confusing points to ask teachers later, 2
hours for homework and 1 hour for extensive English reading or listening
(but try to choose materials close to the topics in class).
 In the first lesson, following the ice-breaking activity, please remember to
spend 15-20 minutes introducing to students the objectives and syllabus
of the course. Forgetting this part may cause students to have inaccurate
ideas about what they will learn, which can also affect their study plans.

EXAM TIPS: The Three-step Preparation Method in Part 2

Step 1: Select something that is easy to talk about. Once you have something
easy to talk about, you can concentrate on language features and ways to
increase your score.

Easy things should:

 Have a lot of features
The more features your topic has, the easier it is to keep talking or
developing your Part 2 answer. Generally, it is easier to talk about
“bigger” things than “smaller” specific things.
 Be expandable
So that you can keep adding points on to the end of your speech.

You can make up some details in your story, even if they are not true, as
long as they are appropriate and easy to speak about in your speech.
The examiner only assesses your spoken English and he/she does not
care about whether the content is 100 percent true or not.

Note: Ignore the adjective Lesson 1
Many people get distracted by the adjectives which often appear in the topic
description, e.g., look at the following Part Two topic cards: ... An interesting
building in your city ..."

If you find it hard to think of a building that is particularly interesting, don't try to.
You don't lose marks if your building is not very interesting and you don't get more
marks if your building seems very interesting. Just choose any building that loosely
fits the topic.

Step 2: Vocabulary

The next step in the one-minute preparation is to write down words (particularly
nouns) that prompt you to explain more and extend each point with justifications
and examples.
If time allows, you can also write down as many examples of uncommon
vocabulary as possible. The vocabulary must be directly related to the topic.

(Note: A good method is to ask the following question: “Can this word be used
for many other topics?” If the answer is “Yes” then that word is NOT directly
related to the topic.)

The other words are not directly related to the topic and could probably be used
for many Part Two topics, e.g. interesting (this word could be used for almost
every topic).

It is fine to use the common words during your Part Two talk, but during the
preparation stage you need to find uncommon topic-specific words. However, if
you are not sure about the appropriate use of uncommon words, trying to use
them in your talk may hurt your fluency, you will risk reducing your band score.

When you look at your topic card, decide which tenses you need to use.

Preparation Summary
Remember you only have one minute to prepare so you really do not have time
to write sentences or phrases. The most important things to write on your paper
are probably a few vocabulary items and a grammar reminder. Also note that
one purpose of note-taking should be the organization of the talk.

“Well, I’ll start by mentioning the Vietnamese martial art Vovinam, a skilled art
which is used to promote physical and spiritual well-being. I could also add that
Vovinam is very popular in Vietnam and actually, a lot of universities have this
skill as a compulsory subject for the students.
Regarding the reasons I would like to learn it, what I have to stress here is that I
would really like to get in shape because at the moment I’m quite unfit. Ever since
I was a kid I’ve been kind of fascinated by Vovinam, especially the way it can
help people to relieve stress and improve overall physical fitness.
However, it would be quite demanding at first, but I’m sure I would be able to
deal with the challenge even though it might be tough to master some
complicated techniques.
So to end, if I still have time, I should say that I will definitely register for a
Vovinam class soon, which would be very helpful for me to be able to defend
myself against dangerous situations, for example, a robbery or something like
that.”

I first saw this painting when I was in primary school, my art teacher taught us about Da
Vinci’s paintings and of course the Mona Lisa was one of them. At first I thought it was just a
boring portrait for an old woman but the more I looked at it the more I began to be attracted

by her strange smile. It was also a little funny to me because she had no eye brows and her
hair style is different to what I’m used to.

In my opinion Da Vinci painted her almost like St Mary – She has a kind and gentle look and
is always smiling at you; her sitting posture is also very elegant with one hand over the other.
I think it’s because Da Vinci was a Christian and also painted religious paintings such as the
Last Supper.

I personally think the Mona Lisa is truly an impressive painting, after all it was painted by the
great Leonardo Da Vinci – without it the world just wouldn't be the same.”

1. Facebook is a social networking website. It's a free website that allows you
to keep in contact with friends or find people you've lost touch with. It's one
of the most popular websites in the world, with millions of users in different
countries.
2. All of my friends use Facebook. One of my friends sent me an email inviting

me to join. I signed up and I've been using it ever since.
3. Facebook allows you to keep up to date with what friends are doing. You
have a profile page with information and status updates so that you can tell
everyone what you're doing. You can post messages to other people's
pages. You can upload photos and videos. I find Facebook most useful for
organising my life, keeping in touch with friends and storing photos. I think
social networking websites have become part of everyday life.

Describe a visit to a museum

“Last month my cousins came over to my house and they were insisting on going to
the museum. I was not interested in going to the museum because I do not like
museums at all. They finally persuaded me to go there and when I entered the
museum I was mesmerized by the beauty of the museum.

The museum was divided into sections. The first section was related to great
inventions, whereas the other section was mainly concerned with paintings and all
other stuff. I was more inclined towards the inventions, so I went to the first section.
As I entered the area I could see a huge computer. The computer was made in the
1960s and it was of the size of the room. I was amazed to see its size and I realized
that the computer engineers of today have made a lot of effort to reduce the size of
computers. I also saw the first light bulb and some other stuff.

My cousin came to me and he told me that there was some interesting stuff down
there in the other section so I decided give it a look. The other section consisted of
paintings from the Mughal era. The paintings were very beautiful and they depicted
the beauty of that period. There was also a huge food court in the museum so we
went to eat something.

The overall experience of the museum was simply fantastic. I saw a lot of things and
I came to know about my country’s culture. I think that if I had not visited the
museum I would have regretted this decision for the rest of my life. I feel that
everyone should pay a visit to this museum because it keeps him or her well
informed about culture and we should all applaud the efforts of our ancestors as they
made many sacrifices to make our life easier.”

“Ok, I'm going to talk about a problem with the environment in my country.

One of the most serious problems at the moment is flooding. This is starting to
happen every year and each year it seems to get worse. I think it may be caused by
a number of factors. Firstly there has been a lot of deforestation in the north of the
country, a lot of it from illegal logging. Because of this, when it rains the water has
nothing to soak it up so it just runs down the mountains and into the villages and
towns. Another factor may be global warming. Scientists believe that this is causing
more severe weather, so this may account for the increasing amount of rain that we
seem to be seeing. It also means the soil is drier, so again the rain water runs off it
rather than being soaked up.

Unfortunately, there have been really serious effects on my country. As I said,

the excess water runs into the villages and the towns through the rivers and the

rivers then overflow causing massive flooding. This effects thousands of people who
then become homeless. Several hundred usually die each year as well. It travels
through the country as it starts in the north and goes down to the sea, so it can affect
many towns and the capital city too. This also has repercussions for the government
as they have to spend so much money managing the disasters each year.

The government is trying to tackle the problem, but it is not easy. They are trying
to stop so much deforestation but a lot of the damage has already been done so
what can they do? They are also starting to build defenses such as walls along some
of the major rivers that run through the town to try to stop them overflowing. Another
thing they are doing is trying to improve their response systems. In most towns there
is now a government organization responsible for coordinating relief operations and
making sure they are prepared in advance.

I think this problem is a top priority to solve because it has such devastating
impacts. As I mentioned before, it causes suffering for so many people and it is also
a huge expense for the government, and as we are not a rich country, we cannot
afford this. It means that other services suffer because of a lack of money. There are
other problems that my country has, but I think that is by far the worst.

So, that is the most serious problem in my country, and I only hope that it does not
continue to get worse.”

Tell me about some of the environmental problems that are affecting countries
these days?

“Well, there are a lot at the moment. Although it has not been proven for sure, there
is a great deal of consensus about the fact that global warming is leading to severe
weather change and this is resulting in many problems. We are seeing a lot of
countries with the same problems that they have always had but on a much larger
scale. For example, in the United States there seem to be far more hurricanes and
tornadoes than in the past, with more devastating effects. There seems to constantly
be news of serious flooding in many countries from Asia to Europe. Forest fires also
seem to be getting worse, particularly each year in Australia.”

Do you think that governments around the world are doing enough to tackle
the problems?

“No, usually I don't think they are doing enough. There are countries that do what
they can do help their people when problems occur and they are trying to come up
with measures to mitigate the effects, but when it comes to the major issue of global
warming countries are not doing enough. We see time and again that no agreement
can be made on how to reduce carbon footprints. This is usually because
governments know that to make a serious reduction in carbon dioxide emissions
they will have to sacrifice economic growth and they are not prepared to do this.
Governments think very short-term. They know that if there is economic decline, then
they will be voted out.”

Why do some people not consider environmental problems to be serious?

“I think there are several reasons for that. In some cases it is simply because people
are not affected on a day-to-day basis so it does not concern them. They just see it
on the news affecting other people. It does not mean they do not care, but they will
soon forget about it. Also, some big organizations can be responsible for putting the
wrong information out. For example, oil companies have a vested interest in making
sure people do not believe in global warming as it could affect their profits, so they
play the issue down. Also, some people think as it is a long-term problem, they will
be dead by the time it will affect them so they think it is not important for them!”

What do you consider to be the world’s worst environmental disaster caused
by humans?

“I think that may be the nuclear disaster in Chernobyl, Ukraine. In that case there
was an explosion and nuclear meltdown. It caused great loss of life. The
environment was badly affected and it is still affected today and could be for many
years. There are also many people who are still getting sick from the disaster and no
one can live anywhere near the site. Of course there are many other serious ones,
some more recent such as the oil spills in Africa and the US.”

Why do you think environmental disasters caused by humans happen?

“It could be for different reasons. In some cases it is simply because not enough care
is taken. Maybe procedures are not good enough. It could also be because the drive
for profit means that there is cost cutting and that again could mean that good
procedures are not in place. There is usually a situation when a disaster happens
where blame will be deflected and it is difficult to establish exactly who is responsible.
Nobody wants to admit responsibility because it means they will have to pay
compensation. Sometimes a disaster can happen because of a simple mistake by
someone.”

Do you think there will be more environmental disasters caused by humans in

the future?

“I don't think there will necessarily be more. Procedures are always getting tighter so
in theory there should be fewer, but mistakes will always happen so I'm sure they will
continue unfortunately. Governments must continue to prosecute any companies
that do cause environmental problems or disasters so that they are less likely to
happen again.”

“When we’re the discussing the environment, it’s important not to forget that our
actions have an impact not only on us but on the natural world and other species.
So, for example, certain species are now endangered because of our actions. It’s
not just because of hunting, but because we have destroyed their natural habitats:
they do not enough food or anywhere to live. If we carry on in this way, the
biodiversity of the planet is under threat.”

“I would have said that one of the most serious environmental problems today is of
course pollution. It’s a very pressing green issue and if you travel to any of the
large cities in China, for example, you’ll find that there is very bad air pollution and
there is a layer of smog hanging over the cities. It’s not just air pollution, there is
also water pollution. In many parts of the world, the quality of the water is not
good because rivers have been contaminated by all sorts of industrial waste,
by chemicals and fertilisers. And what we need to do is to recycle our waste and
take care of the planet and try use renewable resources where we possibly can.”

“Another extremely important green issue is of course energy. There are two points
to be made here. The first point is that the way we use energy is causing harm to
the environment. Most of us get energy in the form of electricity. This electricity is
produced by power stations. These power stations emit all sorts of
dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide up into the atmosphere. And these
gases cause acid rain which does harm to our ecosystem and environment. The
second point to make about energy is we need to make sure that we are using
energy in a sustainable way. There is a limit to the Earth’s natural resources and
there is a danger that we use so much energy the Earth is no longer going to be able
to provide us with sufficient coal and fossil fuels. What we need to do is look for
more renewable sources of energy such as wind or perhaps solar energy from
the sun.”

“What’s the greatest threat to the Earth today? I’d have to say it’s probably a
combination of global warming and the greenhouse effect. I don’t understand all
the science behind it, but I understand it’s to do with the buildup of gases such as
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, which means that the planet is slowly but
steadily getting warmer. And one of the results of this is that the polar icecaps are
melting and the levels of the oceans are rising. And it’s caused I understand by
deforestation, particularly of rainforests and particularly in the Amazonian Basin.
And what this means is that we may be doing irreparable harm to the planet and
the future of the planet for our children and our children’s children looks really rather
bleak.”

In Part 3, you need to use frame-working language which is appropriate for the type of
question you have been asked. For descriptive questions, it is often necessary to
generalise about people or situations (use plural nouns to reflect this). For speculative
questions, you will need to use the future simple (will + base verb) and modal verbs of
possibility, such as may, might, and could (+ base verb).

• What is your favorite means of communication?

“There are many means of communication in this world. I would like to tell you
about the means of communication which I use. I use phone, laptop, e-mails
and letter. I personally feel that phone is the best means of communication. I
remember that once I had an accident and I was travelling alone in a rainy
night. I did not know what to do, but I had my phone and I straight away called
for help and I was able to get the help because of the phone.”

• What are the advantages and disadvantages of using it?

“There are many advantages of using a phone as I mentioned earlier that it
can help a person in emergencies. Other than that the phones are operating
as mini-computers as they have all the features which are available in a
computer. We can catch up with a friend without actually meeting the friend
personally. Phones tend to save time if they are used properly, for instance if I
have to cancel a class I simply sends a message to the students and they
come to know that there is no class today. This would apply if you are a
teacher.

There are also some disadvantages of using the phone. The most obvious
ones are that people waste a lot of time and money by talking on the phone
for hours. I also hate the ring tones of the phones so I mostly keep my phone
silent.”

is an independent clause combined with one or more dependent clauses and always
contains a subordinating conjunction such as because, after, while, if, when, and so on.

 Sentences which contain a relative clause

When you write and speak about computers and technology, very often you will be
asked to say how technology has changed or progressed.

Notes
Progress is an uncountable word, while advance is countable. So you say that
“digital technology is an advance” but you cannot say that “there has been progress

Notes
Be careful with the difference between “affect” (generally a verb) and “effect”
(generally a noun). Just to confuse you, in English they sound exactly the same.

“impact” and “influence” are often used with the preposition “on”

Technology and computer words

It is very easy to keep on repeating the same word without knowing it. One way not
to do this is to change the form of the word or to use it in a different phrase.

Notes
Be careful with the spelling of technology.
A “technophile” loves technology and a “technophobe” hates it. In speaking, you
could use the less formal word “geek” for technophile, but I would avoid it in writing.

There is no great difference between “ICT” and “IT”. However, as my example shows
ICT is most frequently used as the name of an academic subject.

Adjectives

Notes
It is normal to use hyphens (-) in adjective phrases such as “state-of-the-art” when
they are used before nouns (“state-of-the-art technology”), but you do not always
need them when they are used without a noun (“this technology is state of the
art”).“Obsolete” is similar in meaning to “outdated”, but is a stronger word to show
that the technology is so old that it cannot be used any longer. It is normal to write
“high tech” rather than “high technology”.

Device words
This is a rather confusing set of words to describe different kinds of objects.

Notes
A “device” is often something fairly small that allows you to complete a task. There is
a strong collocation (very common phrase): “labour-saving device”.

“Equipment” is an uncountable word so you need to say “a piece of equipment”. It is

a very general use word that can be used to describe almost anything mechanical.

“Gadget” is a word often used to describe objects that are either small or have a less
serious purpose.

“Appliance” is typically used in the phrase “electrical appliances” (e.g. irons and
kettles) that are less advanced technology.

LESSON 7 – FINAL SPEAKING TEST

A. FINAL SPEAKING TEST – PARTS 1, 2, & 3

The speaking test includes all the parts of the IELTS Speaking Test. The time for
each individual speaking test is 11-14 minutes. Use the 10 question sets provided
on the next pages for your preparation. You can also prepare your own lists of
questions for the students, but make sure that they are in the IELTS Speaking
format. Ask the staff in the materials dept. for some print-outs including the
question sets and your speaking feedback sheets when necessary.

Guidance on conducting the speaking test

 Call each student in turn and conduct the individual test following the
sequence of the IELTS Speaking Test (Part 1 – 4-5 minutes, Part 2 – 3-4
minutes, and Part 3 – 4-5 minutes).
 During the speaking test, the student can only be given a topic card in Part 2
to make notes and prepare for the talk. At no time can they read the other
questions in Part 1 and Part 3.
 Each student has one minute to prepare for their Part 2 talk (ask him/her to
make notes on a piece of paper).
 Each student has between one and two minutes for their talk.
 As soon as the student finishes their talk, spend five minutes telling him/her
your feedback based on your notes on the speaking feedback sheet (do
NOT give him/her the speaking feedback sheet).
 At the end of the lesson, put all of your speaking feedback sheets into the
teaching folder. RES staff need these in order to inform the students’
parents of their progress.

Possible administrative questions before the speaking test begins

Admin questions
1. Can I see your (photo) ID please? / Please show me your passport. / Can I see
some identification first?
Name
2. Could you tell me your (full) name please?
3. What would you like me to call you? / What should I call you?

Note: These questions are for administrative purposes; thus, do not give very long
extended answers. A short but sufficient answer like:

“Do you prefer Mrs, Miss or Ms? – I would like to be addressed Miss.” is appropriate.

The examiner will tell you when the speaking test actually starts. For example, the
instruction could be: “Now, in this first part I'd like to ask you some questions about
yourself." After that, remember to give extended answers because your responses
will be marked.
