What is READING?

interpreting the written or printed characters.

which serve as stimuli for the recall of
meanings built up through the reader's past
experience (Bond and Tinker, 1967)

THEORIES in READING
1. BEHAVIORISM
> children learn language by repeating words and sentences
given by their teachers or on workbook pages. To learn to
read, children must work through and develop a series of
isolated skills.

2. COGNITIVE
> emphasizes the interactive nature of reading and the
constructive nature of comprehension. Dole et al. (1991) have
stated that, besides knowledge brought to bear on the
reading process, a set of flexible, adaptable strategies are
used to make sense of a text and to monitor ongoing
understanding.
