TD13-00008 Water Leakage From O-Ring of Cylinder Liner

1) The document discusses a water leakage issue found from the O-ring of cylinder liners during engine servicing. 2) It was determined the leakage was likely due to distortion of the O-ring caused by moving the liner during piston extraction. 3) The document provides two improvements - changing to a higher water resistance O-ring made with peroxide vulcanization, and using a new liner fastening jig when extracting pistons to prevent O-ring distortion.

Water leakage from O-ring at the lower cylinder liner was found during
servicing in the market after extracting the piston.
Since no scoring or tear was found in the O-ring, we project that water
leaked due to distortion of O-ring, which was caused by moving the
liner when extracting the piston.
Provide the improved servicing as mentioned below when following
conditions are applicable:
[Conditions]
Change O-ring here
・Servicing be made in winter.
・Temperature gap between seawater and engine room temperatures
is large depending on the season or operating seas.
・Engine stopped and started frequently. Fig.1

・Running hours exceeded 2 years.

Improvement①: Change of O-ring

The vulcanization method during O-ring manufacturing was changed from polyol vulcanization to peroxide
vulcanization for manufacturing O-rings with higher water resistance. Change the existing O-ring to the
improved O-ring for the position specified in Fig.1.

Improvement ②: Use of Liner Fastening Jig

When extracting the piston for servicing, use the new jig (P/N: 147673-92960), shown in Fig.3, for fastening
the liner. Prepared the necessary number of fastening jigs and spacers depending on the engine model and
type of engineering.
