Culture offers a great impact and significance to everyone and every nation.

We

may be diverse because of culture but it shows our own uniqueness that particularly

identify us. We may have different characteristics but it doesn’t signify that we can’t

build a relationship especially to foreign people. As a Filipino, we are born and

governed by culture which mold us even up to these days. It became our traditions and

part of our daily lives which serve as principles and ways how we live life. There may

be some negative attributes that needed to be changed. But we can’t deny, it is a part of

who we are.

The first video entitled “Filipino Values- Understanding Culture” focuses on the

values of Filipinos which can be either positive or negative. Truly, we are distinct to

anybody else but it doesn’t mean we should distinct ourselves when socializing with

other people. I was mostly touch while watching the guard of UP Diliman who works

there for 26 years. He says that a Filipino has the characteristic of being helpful and

accommodating. I can sense that he has the heart to help people even though he lacks a

big sum of money. Instead, by his good service to serve the school and good view of life

to give what he can do, it is more than enough as long as the heart have good

intentions. Moreover, I also highlighted to my mind that Filipinos are truly hospitable

people. Filipinos will surely acknowledge, welcome visitors, and give foods or snacks

even that should be for their own or family. The very fact that we give welcoming

smiles and accommodating behavior will surely inspire others to do it also. Yet, we

can’t hide that there are variety of unnecessary values that we live into. Just like the

crab mentality, manana habit and the famous Filipino time. Well, those values are

instilled to us because we are born and exposed to those. Yet, if a person is guided by

ethical standards or principle, he/she can realize the importance of being ethical.

Going to the second video entitled “Top 10 Philippine Culture and Traditions”, it

focused more on the idea of culture and traditions are passes through the child from its

parents. It is more on our ancestors whom we came from and countries that once

colonized the Philippines. Truly, Filipinos are fond in believing superstitious beliefs

particularly in health, lifestyles and attitudes. The opinion of the elderly are significant

to us since we acknowledge them as people who have more experience than us. But

nowadays, generations are changing and so do the perspective of every people

especially who live at the city. But most on the countryside or rural areas, some still

value beliefs based on superstition. In addition, having fiesta in our baranggay,

municipality or province has always been a part of our traditions. In some ethnic areas,

they still practice some cockfighting and ethnic dance competitions. And of course, each

places particularly to the Philippines, has its own traditions. Because of the one who

colonized us and reside to a specific place, we got their beliefs and practice those even

up to these days.

Lastly but not the least, the third video entitled “Filipino Culture” which American

Missionaries explain what they observe from the Filipinos. What is good about what

they said is that they acknowledge our culture and love them even though their culture

are different from us. They like our attitudes toward life. While watching the video, I’m

thanking and laughing with joy since they observe us in a positive way. I would like to

highlight what they mostly said that Filipinos are very hospitable people. Truly, we

would welcome them if they visit our homes and give them what we can give, share

what we have and do what we can do for them. Moreover, they pinpoint the idea of

being resilient, receptive, and always smiling even there are calamities or problems

which is truly who we are. They also love our holidays and respect how we celebrate

them. They see how generous, kind and friendly we are even we have different race or

nationality. But most of all, I’m grateful that they see us as a religious people even there

are many religions they encountered that we belong into. And I respect them on how

they manage to explain our faith even their religion is different from us.

As a conclusion, we may be different from others but the good relationship that we

build is what’s more important. We don’t need to showcase with pride who we really

are. But instead, humbleness and respect should be instilled in our minds and hearts.

Because if we have the right intention to build relationship even cultures and traditions

are opposite to each other and hinder us to thoroughly understand each other,

kindness, love and other ethical ways will surely help us to establish trust and

fellowship to understand each differences as a human being.
