Exercise 1 - Point to Pattern

Aim: To understand the formation of compositions from points.

Procedure:

1. Use any shape as point.

2. Establish a suitable pattern to be used in a fabric with the help of a 5cm X 5cm
grid.

Exercise 2 – Point, Line, Plane and Volume (Study and Analysis)

Aim: To introduce buildings as multiple components of points, lines, planes and volume.

Procedure:

1. Choose different building or objects to identify and analyze the various point, line,
plane and volume in the respective.
2. Create a space or an object with the help of your analysis.

Exercise 3 – Space and Form (Nature Based)

Aim: To understand the characteristic of a space and its implications in the form.

Procedure:

1. Choose a flower or a leaf.

2. Create an abstract out of it to produce a form.
3. Analyze the space inside it to be used for a specific user.

Exercise 4 – Principles of Visual Composition

Aim: To understand elements of design in basic 2D composition

Procedure:

1. Use any of the following – cube, cylinder, pyramid, cone, sphere or any platonic
solids.
2. Create a meaningful composition to the given topic from the following – school
lobby, shopping mall corridor, architects office, hospital lobby IT office, Hotel
lobby, Restaurant, Outdoor Seating, Auditorium, Textile showroom, meditation
center and bedroom wall.
3. Use a minimum of 2 principles of design – rhythm, symmetry, emphasis, harmony,
movement, unity, balance, contrast, proportion to create the composition.
4. Explain and give justification for the composition.

Exercise 5 – Color Wheel Exploration

Aim: To understand the basics of color.

Procedure:

1. Choose any historical plan.

2. Create a grid out of that plan.
3. Color the inner spaces of the grid with the basics of the color wheel.

Exercise 6 – Color Theory and its Application

Aim: To understand the color theory and its application in the building forms.

Procedure:

1. Use any of the following shapes – square, triangle or circle.

2. Create a pattern with 6 shapes in a 15 cm x 15 cm grid.
3. Explore the color theory – monochrome, analogous, complimentary and split
complimentary in 4 patterns.

Extrude the pattern into a 3D model and apply the color scheme in the interior and
exterior space.

Exercise 7 – Collage

Aim: To understand the principles and philosophies of an Architect’s work.

Procedure:

1. Choose an Architect.
2. Explore his/her design ideas through various numbers of their works.
3. Make a composition (minimum 5 works) of the selected works using newspaper.

Exercise 8 – Geometry and Forms

Aim: To understand the fundamentals of form making and visualizing it.

Procedure:

1. Make the two dimensional shapes and explain the theorems associated with
making of these shapes.
2. Extrude the two dimensional shapes into three dimensional forms.
3. Express the visual abilities through making the objects and drawing them.

Exercise 9 – Texture

Aim: To understand the applied and stimulated textures and its application.

Procedure:

1. Select a space from the following – Children’s play area, Parking, Amphitheatre.
2. Understand the different textures involved in that particular space.
3. Design the space based on your understand.
4. Create a two dimensional model of the space by dip and paint method using
different medium like leaf print, vegetables, sponge, etc,.
Exercise 10 – Geometrical Form for Design

Aim: To understand the comprehension of geometry and structural stability.

Procedure:

1. Select a user space from the following – Fuel Station, Exhibition Pavilion, Viewing
Gallery, Way side Restaurant.
2. Understand the characteristics of the space.
3. Design the space based on the understanding.
4. Create a scale model using the geometrical forms by making the structure stable.

Exercise 11 – Cluster of Forms

Aim: To understand the relationship between built forms and in between spaces through
cluster making.

Procedure:

1. Make repetitive three dimensional forms in terms of form, size, color and texture.
2. Arrange them in clusters to understand the built forms and in between spaces.
3. Recreate the visual in a two dimensional shape.

Exercise 12 – Analysis of a Designer Chair

Aim: To understand the form, function, visual characteristics and ergonomics of a

designer chair.

Procedure:

1. Select an iconic designer chair.

2. Understand the various techniques involved in the making and in the use of it.
3. Recreate a small scale model of the chair with respect to the interior space.

Exercise 13 – Contemporary Sculpture Design

Aim: To understand the solids and voids in forms and spaces.

Procedure:

1. Select a space from the following – Outdoor Garden / Park, Table Top, Trophy.
2. Design a contemporary sculptor.
3. Create a three dimensional scale structure using plaster of Paris (PoP).

Exercise 14 – Analysis of a Building.

Aim: To understand the visual character, form and function, play of light and shade, solids
and voids, colors and texture in an iconic building.
Procedure:

1. Choose an Architect from the Contemporary period and select one of his iconic
work.
2. Create a scale model of the building.
3. Understand the form, function, play of light and structural stability involved in it.
