HISTORY AND PHILOSOPHY OF
THE CHRISTIAN MEDICAL COLLEGE & COLLEGE OF NURSING

The Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore was founded by Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, daughter of Dr. John
Scudder II, an American medical missionary. She was born on 9th December 1870 at Ranipet. The first eight
years of her life was in India with her parents. Later she went back to America for her education. In 1890,
she returned to India to attend to her ailing mother. Ida had plans to go back to U.S.A., but God’s plans were
different for Ida.

In 1891, Ida was faced with a great challenge. One night, she was approached by three men seeking help for
their young wives in labour. Ida’s father Dr. John Scudder, an experienced doctor, offered to help them. But
they refused to have a male doctor and requested young Ida to help their wives during labour. Not being a
doctor, Ida was unable to help them and the three women lost their lives. Young Ida was moved by the death
of these three young Indian women during child birth. She saw the suffering of women in India and realized
the need for women doctors to attend to the women whose traditions did not permit them to be treated by men.
She gave up the dreams of settling down in U.S.A. and answered God’s call and decided to study medicine
and serve the Indian women.

Ida went to America and obtained medical training, specializing in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. She returned
to India in 1900 and established a single bedded clinic in her father’s bungalow at Sainathapuram, Vellore.
As more and more patients started coming to her, the need for more beds and better facilities became a
necessity. In 1902, 40 bedded Mary Taber Schell Memorial Hospital was built. In 1904, Miss Lillian Hart, a
trained nurse was assigned to Schell Hospital. She was also involved in training the young girls from villages
in bed side nursing care. In 1924, the present hospital site was built with 267 beds. The peripheral units of
the hospital include Schell Eye Hospital, Low Cost Effective Care Unit (LCECU), rural hospitals such as
RUHSA and CHAD, New Life Centre for leprosy patients, Rehabilitation Centre and Mental Health Centre.
The College of Nursing Community Health (CONCH) and Urban community programmes cater to maternal
and child health services in rural and urban areas respectively. The LCECU provides medical care for the
under privileged in the urban slums of Vellore. Today, there are over 2866 beds for inpatients. Over 8374
outpatients are treated daily in the main hospital and in peripheral units.

In 1909, Miss Delia Houghton, a Registered Nurse came to India as the first instructor and started a regular
programme for training nurses. The first training school was started in 1909 with five students. This
programme, called the lower grade course, was later upgraded to higher grade training (Diploma Nursing) in
1932. Miss Vera K. Pitman and Miss Florence Taylor were the two pioneers who raised nursing education
to a four year programme leading to a University degree affiliated to the Madras University. In the year 1946,
the first batch of B.Sc. Nursing students were admitted. A tutor course was initiated and continued for few
years which was later upgraded to Post Basic B.Sc. Nursing programme in 1967. This programme was useful
for the Diploma nurses to upgrade themselves. The M.Sc. Nursing programme was started in 1969. Ph.D. in
Nursing, affiliated to the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, Chennai, was started in 1994. Post
Basic Diploma programmes, introduced to meet the special needs of the society are Cardio Thoracic Nursing,
Critical Care Nursing, Emergency and Disaster Nursing, Neurology Nursing, Operating Room Nursing,
Neonatal Nursing, Oncology Nursing, Psychiatric Nursing, Orthopaedic & Rehabilitation Nursing and
Geriatric Nursing, which are recognized by Indian Nursing Council (INC). Burns Nursing and Renal Nursing
are Institutional programmes. Fellowship courses in Family Nurse Practice, Haematology Nursing,
Respiratory Nursing and Paediatric Critical Care Nursing were started after 2005.

The College of Nursing is publishing a biannual, registered National Nursing Journal titled “Indian Journal of
Continuing Nursing Education” (IJCNE) since 2000. Training programmes sponsored by WHO for the South
East Asian Region (SEAR) were conducted in Community Health Nursing, Midwifery Education &

7
Development and Adult Nursing. A National Training Programme in ‘Emergency and Trauma Nursing’
sponsored by WHO was offered to trainees from different parts of India. Recognizing the contributions of
College of Nursing in preparing quality health care personnnel, it was designated as a “WHO Collaborating
Centre” for Nursing and Midwifery Development in 2003.

In the year 2000, the Government of India has also recognized College of Nursing, CMC., Vellore as an
“Institute of Excellence in India”. In 2006 it was also certified as a study centre for National Ph.D.
Consortium by Indian Nursing Council and WHO. College of Nursing had been a sub-recipient of Global
Funding for AIDS/HIV, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) since 2008. This programme was conducted by
Indian Nursing Council in consultation with NACO to train nurses in India. The year 2009 was marked as
Centennial year of formal nursing education in College of Nursing, CMC., Vellore.

In 2014, College of Nursing, CMC, Vellore started short term courses in six different specialities for staff
nurses working in government hospitals, as per the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the
Government of Madhya Pradesh. The College also has MOU with Universities abroad such as Universities of
Washington, York, Pennsylvania and Kansas.

A distance education programme on “Stoma Care Nursing” was initiated in 2014.

The College of Nursing as an integral part of the CMC, Vellore, has the same objective and philosophy as that
of the Christian Medical College Vellore Association which is “The establishment, maintenance and
development of Christian Medical College in India, where women and men shall receive an education of the
highest grade in the art and science of medicine, nursing or one of the other related professions, to equip them
in the spirit of Christ, for service in the relief of suffering and in the promotion of health”.

The College of Nursing prepares nurses with compassion, commitment and dedication. The students and
staff are expected to maintain the highest standard in their professional and private lives. The staff and
students of CMC have been inspired and guided through the years by the motto given to the institution by
Dr. Ida S. Scudder “NOT TO BE MINISTERED UNTO BUT TO MINISTER”. In accordance with the
purpose for which the College has been founded, the faculty believe in providing a professional education
integrating Christian ideals. Nursing education at CMC continues to be at its best for its quality education
which in turn helps to provide quality patient care.
