Semi-Detailed Lesson Plan in Science and Technology 9
Time Frame: 1 hour
I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the grade 9 students should be able to:
1. describe the parts and function of respiratory system,
2. describe how inhalation and exhalation occur,
3. create a model of respiratory system, and
4. explain the importance of spirometry.
I. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Topic: The Respiratory and Circulatory System

D. Materials
D.1. For the teacher: PowerPoint Presentation (Crossword puzzle, illustration of Parts of
Respiratory system and its function), mock up model (lung-bottle
model) laptop or Mobile Phone.
D.2. For the students: Pen, Paper and a branch of tree if available
E. Teaching Strategies: Inquiry based and discovery and collaborative learning
II. Procedure
A. Preliminary Activities
A.1. Greeting
A.2. Prayer
A.3. Classroom Management
B. Elicit
“WORDS HUNT”. The students will search the following words in the crossword puzzle.
1. Pharynx
2. Lungs
3. nose
4. larynx
5. trachea
6. bronchi
C. ENGAGE
“Breath in and Breathe out Activity”
The students will do `the breathing activity that will demonstrate by the teacher. Follow
up question will follow.
1. Can you tell me what you did in taking deep breath?
2. How do you feel when you breathe in and out?
3. How do you feel when you hold your breath for at least 5 second?
D. Explore
Activity: “Balloon-Bottle Respiratory System model”. The teacher will demonstrate how
make Lung model using the Following materials: 1.5-liter plastic bottle, three balloons, two
distros, scissors, cutter, rubber band and clay.
E. Explain
Follow up discussion about the Activity. The teacher will examine the observation and
understanding of the students in the activity through asking questions.
Guide Questions:
1. What does each part of the constructed lung model represent?
2. What happens when you pull down the larger balloon at the bottom of the model?
3. What happen when you push up the balloon at the bottom of the model?
4. How does the movement of diaphragm cause the air to go in and out of the lungs?
5. What do you think will happen if you prick or put a hole in the balloon?
F. Elaborate
The teacher will show a picture of spirometry and will explain how it works.
Spirometry - is a common office test used to assess how well your lungs work by measuring
how much air you inhale, how much you exhale and how quickly you exhale. Spirometry is
used to diagnose asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other
conditions that affect breathing.
The students will give their ideas in this Question. “Why is spirometry important?
G. Evaluation
Label it!
The teacher will show some parts of the respiratory system and the students will name it.
1. NOSE/ Nasal Cavity
2. Oral Cavity
3. Pharynx
4. Larynx
5. Trachea
6. Bronchi
7. Bronchioles
8. Lungs
H. Extend
The students will do some research bout the respiratory diseases and how they affect the
function of the respiratory system.
