exist

2) METLIB - where the MineSight procedure files

exist

These files can be located either on a network or

locally on the users pc.

Tel:+61 8 9436 0700 Fax:+61 8 9436 0777 E-mail: [email protected] Web: www.mintec.com
Four environment variables must be set on the computer prior to
running MS Compass; they are MEDEXE, METLIB, PATH and
DEFIL.
In a standalone installation these will usually be set to the following;
• MEDEXE - should be set to C:\medexe - or, the path to the
subdirectory where the MineSight executable files exist on the
system.

• METLIB should be set to C:\medexe\metlib\ - or, the path to the

subdirectory where the MineSight procedure files exist on the
system.

• PATH variable must include the path to the subdirectory where the
MineSight executable programs are located.

• DEFIL should be set to .\defil or just . (a single period). If the default

procedure responses are saved to ASCII, this environment variable
defines the directory where the responses will be saved to.

1. Create a Project Folder within Windows Explorer

2. Open MineSight® 3-D by clicking on the appropriate desktop shortcut.

The MineSight splash screen will be displayed. This window…
• Displays the current MineSight licensee's name and
their location
• Allows you to specify your project directory.
• Stores the 15 most recently accessed directories and
are displayed in the drop-down window
• Use the "X" button to delete recently accessed
directories from the list (Deletes the project link, not
the project)
3. Browse to and select the new
project folder > Ok
• This Notice window is only displayed when you
specify a directory that does not have a MineSight®
3-D project already started. The project resource
folder is a subdirectory of the main project directory
that contains all the MineSight® 3-D files. This
subdirectory is always called _msresources.
• Click Yes 8
5. Project Settings
115 Newcastle Street / PO Box 8028, Perth BC WA 6000
4. Set the Project Settings
Tel:+61 8 9436 0700 Fax:+61 8 9436 0777 E-mail: [email protected] Web: www.mintec.com

The Project Settings dialog displays the Minimum and Maximum coordinates
of the project, along with a project Cell Size and Project Units. They allow
confirmation of the project limits, the setting of various parameters used when
MineSight® performs volume calculations, and the setting of material properties
for the project. MineSight does allow you to work outside of your project limits.
• If this is a new MineSight 3-D
project, the first thing to do is set
the Project Limits. You can do this
by two ways. Either…
1) Set the limits manually, or
2) Use a pre-existing MineSight
PCF (Project Control File), click on
the 'Initialize from an existing PCF
...' and browse to the PCF file to
use.

Upon completion MineSight creates the various files that it requires to run the
project within the Project Folder. These files are located in a folder called
9
_msresources, which is located as a subfolder of your MineSight project folder.
6. The _msresources Folder
115 Newcastle Street / PO Box 8028, Perth BC WA 6000
Tel:+61 8 9436 0700 Fax:+61 8 9436 0777 E-mail: [email protected] Web: www.mintec.com
The _msresources folder is created when your
MineSight® 3-D project is initialized, and contains
the following default folders and files:
Items, Materials and Settings subfolders, are
created;
The Items folder is initially empty
The Materials folder contains 20 default materials
and should not be deleted, although if they do not
exist on MineSight® 3-D startup, they will be
created.
The Settings folder stores cursor and texture
settings

dialogs.ptf - this file contains user parameter entries from the various
MineSight® 3-D dialogs, as well as specific entries from the Pit Expansion Tool,
the Blast Pattern Editor, Model Coding Geometry sets, etc. Warning: the
dialogs.ptf file should never be deleted.
10
project settings.msr - contains the information

prompted for new project limits on startup of
MineSight® 3-D. This can be useful if you need
to reset your project origin (used for internal
normalization of the project) to a more
reasonable value.

Viewer1.msr, and Viewer1.msr% - The

Viewer1.msr file is the default Viewer object,
and Viewer1.msr% is a backup copy of this
object. If the Viewer1 files are deleted, they will
be recreated the next time MineSight® 3-D is
launched.

msAudit.txt - The MineSight Audit file is created in the local project directory
(not in the \_msresources directory). This file records every entry in the
MineSight Messages window and every run of an MS Compass procedure.

The Data Manager is the main application window
that appears within the Viewer Control Window. The
Data Manager controls…

– The management, creation and deletion of

folders and Data Objects in a project
– Opening and closing folders and objects
– Importing and exporting data

The Data Manager utilizes a Windows Explorer style

interface where folders are used to organize Data
Objects.
Changes to the Projects file structure can made
within the Data Manager or in Windows Explorer. To
see the changes made to the Data Manager when
edited from Windows the <unnamed> folder must
first be Refreshed.

23
The Data Manager also contains a Data Object
filter. This only pertains to the Data Objects that

affect the data displayed in the viewer.

You can also save the Viewer setup and all of the
data open within the viewer as a .msn file. Upon re-
starting MineSight the saved setup can be opened
without the need to reopen all of the data objects
manually.

Blocks within the Data Manger. The Data Manager utilizes a Windows NT®
Explorer-style interface to create and edit folders.
Using numerical prefixes when structuring your
project will help to order your data and enable
more efficient data location and recovery.

Some ideas for structuring your project;

• Use numerical prefixes on folders and
subfolders
• Group similar type data
• Keep the directory structure simple
• In large projects eliminate the use of spaces
when naming files – use _, - or . instead.

This will facilitate quicker validation of data

objects upon project startup.

Tel:+61 8 9436 0700 Fax:+61 8 9436 0777 E-mail: [email protected] Web: www.mintec.com

Geometry Objects are used for the creation, storage and edit of all point,
polyline, polygon, surface and solid data (Elements) and are commonly the
most used of all the Data Objects.

Materials govern how elements within a geometry object are displayed.

Upon creation Geometry objects have a default material type called
Geometry that defines how all elements within the Geometry object are
displayed .
You can attribute elements with unique Material types by one of two ways.
Materials can be attributed at either the;

13.1) Element level, - specific to individual elements (points, polylines or

solids), or at the,

13.2) Geometry Object level - applying a single Material to all elements

The former suits geometry objects containing numerous points, polylines and
solid objects of differing colour and line-style, whereas the latter suits 34
Geometry Objects with a small number of “similar” elements only.
18.1 Attributing Materials at an Element level
• Suits multiple elements with differing

etc) such as development levels within a single Geometry Object.
1. Create unique Material types in the Materials folder
2. Use Element > Attribute to assign the Materials to
the desired strings. Use the icon to browse to and
select the appropriate Material type. Make sure the
Match Name with Material Name option is selected.
3. The Unattribute option removes the assigned unique
Material type and reverts to displaying the element by
the default geometry objects material type.

2. provide planes of reference/orientation for viewing data in both 3d and 2d
(can then be clipped)
3. to slice data – to drop polygons from solids (Ring Design)
4. to define edit grids, which again have a number of functions
Creating a Gridset:
• First choose one of the 5 possible the plane
orientations; 3 orthogonal (Plan, EW, NS),
Non-orthogonal, and perpendicular to a
Polyline. Depending on which plane
orientation are selected, the different
sections of the dialog are activated.

Gridset Definition:
• Orthogonal plane orientations (Plan, EW,
NS) can optionally get their plane definition
from either a user-specified origin or from
the PCF. If the PCF is selected, the plane
orientation is based on the model orientation
within the PCF.
• Non-orthogonal plane orientation requires a
specific origin and cannot be based on a
PCF.

• To define planes in the 3D space

• For snapping points to a plane
• As a reference for creating Gridsets
• With the Triangulator to define a surface
• To determine intersections with a 3D surface or
solid
• For a non-orthogonal model view
• To control the camera view
• To limit the visibility on either side of a plane
• To define the plotting plane

To modify the Edit Grid properties:

• Select the Edit Grid Properties icon and
change the position on the plane, the

Tel:+61 8 9436 0700 Fax:+61 8 9436 0777 E-mail: [email protected] Web: www.mintec.com

The Query function provides you

with information about various
objects in the viewer

• Element - displays any attribute information about the elements in the viewer.
– Polyline or polygon Query --- this is a subset of Element query.
– Solids
– Drillholes
– Model blocks
• Center of Mass (polygons) - finds and displays the coordinates for the center of
mass for a polyline or polygon.
• Center of Mass (surfaces) - finds and displays the coordinates for the center of
mass for a surface or a solid.
• Distance Along Polyline - allows you to specify a starting point on a polyline, and
then drag along the polyline to obtain the length.
• Distance At Angle To Line - allows you to specify a line segment and angle, then
drag to find a distance.
• Minimum Distance Between Elements - allows you to specify two elements; the
program will draw the shortest line segment between the elements, and display the
length of the segment. 39
