Method Statement For Testing of Earth Electrode: Prepared by

The document provides instructions for testing earth electrodes at a site. It describes the required testing equipment, including an earth tester, spikes, and hand tools. It explains how to check the installation and then test individual earth pits by driving spikes into the earth and measuring resistance with the tester to ensure it is below thresholds.

METHOD STATEMENT FOR TESTING OF EARTH ELECTRODE

1.0 AIM: The purpose of this document is to explain the brief procedure for testing the earth electrodes at
site.

2.0 TESTING EQUIPMENTS REQUIRED :

2.1 Earth tester
2.2 Spikes with wires
2.3 Hand tools

3.0 TESTING OF EARTH ELECTRODES:

3.1 CHECK FOR COMPLETENESS OF INSTALLATION AND EARTHING.

3.2 TESTING OF EARTH PITS:

3.2.1 Earth resistance is measured by earth resistance tester; the testing kit comprises a low resistance
measuring instrument earth resistance megger and two metallic spikes and cables.
3.2.2 The current spikes is driven into earth at 30 m from earth point under test.
3.2.3 The potential spike is driven at 15 m from the earth point. The voltage between potential spike and
earth point is given to the potential of the meter.
3.2.4 When the handle of the earth tester meter is rotated, the current is driven through the earth.
3.2.5 As the potential spike is moved at different distance from earth electrode an almost constant value of
earth resistance(R) is obtained by the measurements. This constant value is called the earth resistance
of the earth point. (Refer Fig.2)
3.2.6 The earth resistance of combined value should not exceed 1.0 ohm, and the individual value of
earth electrode resistance should not exceed 5 ohms.

R→E/I Resistance → combined (125 / I) Ω

I → Fault current;
125 → Constant
