Chapter 1 Introduction
Thank you for buying the Advantech MIC-3723/3723R. MIC-3723/
3723R is a non-isolated analog output card for CompactPCI systems.
Each analog output channel is equipped with a 16-bit, double-buffered
DAC. It also features auto-calibration function and a BoardID switch.

MIC-3723/3723R is an ideal solution for industrial applications where

multiple analog output channels are required.

The following sections of this chapter will provide further information

about features of the multifunction cards, a Quick Start for installation,
together with some brief information on software and accessories for the
MIC-3723/3723R card.

1.1 Features

• Auto calibration function

• Each analog output channel is equipped with a 16-bit DAC
• Flexible output range: ±10V, 0~20 mA, 4~20 mA
• Synchronized output function
• Output values retained after system hot reset
• 2-port (16-channel) user-defined digital input/output
• BoardID switch
• Rear I/O Module (for MIC-3723R only)

MIC-3723/3723R offers the following main features:

Auto-calibration Function
MIC-3723/3723R provides an auto-calibration function by using a cali-
bration utility. The built-in calibration circuitry of MIC-3723/3723R cor-
rects gain and offset errors in analog output channels, thereby eliminating
the need for external equipment and user adjustments.

MIC-3723/3723R User Manual 2

Flexible Voltage Output Range
MIC-3723/3723R provides a fixed voltage output range at ±10V to fulfill
the flexible range needed for various applications. You can define a spe-
cific voltage output range and output the data format via the enclosed
software utility and driver.

Keep Output Values after System Reset

You can independently set the eight outputs to different ranges: ±10V,
0~20mA or 4~20mA, and all the ranges are software selectable. When the
system is hot reset (power not shut off), MIC-3723/3723R can either
retain the last analog output values, or return to its default configuration,
depending on jumper settings. This practical function eliminates danger
caused by operation errors after unexpected system resets.

BoardID Switch
MIC-3723/3723R has a built-in DIP Switch that helps define each card’s
unique identifier when multiple MIC-3723/3723R cards have been
installed in the same PC chassis. The BoardID switch setting function is
very useful when you build a system with multiple MIC-3723/3723R
cards. With correct BoardID settings, you can easily identify and access
each card during hardware configuration and software programming.

Troubleshooting Device Drivers Error

Driver functions will return a status code when they are called to perform
a certain task for the application. When a function returns a code that is
not zero, it means the function has failed to perform its designated func-
tion. To troubleshoot the Device Drivers error, you can pass the error
code to DRV_GetErrorMessage function to return the error message. Or
you can refer to the Device Drivers Error Codes Appendix in the Device
Drivers Manual for a detailed listing of the Error Code, Error ID and the
Error Message.

3.2.2 Setting the Analog Output Mode After Reset

Some may want the capability of clearing each analog output when the
system (or PC) issues a reset signal on the CompactPCI bus. MIC-3723/
3723R satisfies both these needs with jumper JP9. Depending on the
application, this setting can allow analog outputs to be "ZERO" without
requiring a complete shutdown of processes controlled by the card.

Complete loss of power to the chip clears the chip memory. Thus, no mat-
ter how JP9 is set, if the power to the MIC-3723/3723R is disconnected,
the analog output initial power-on state will be "ZERO".

There are three types of voltage output connections:
1. Floating load.
2. Grounded load.
3. Differential load with ground.
They are shown in the following illustrations.

Current Sink Connections

MIC-3723/3723R’s current loop output uses a 0 to +5 V (unipolar) volt-
age output as each channel’s driving source. Current drive circuits consist
of a power field-effect transistor (FET). The current output’s voltage bias
must be less then 50 V for accurate results. The card also provides an
internal +12 V power source for current loop excitation.
You can use three types of current sink connections:
1. Grounded load with a floating power supply.
2. Floating load with a grounded power supply.
3. Floating load with an internal +12 V power supply.
These are shown in the following illustrations.

Current Sink Load and Power Supply

You have to select the current sink load and power supply carefully.
The current sink circuitry of the MIC-3723/3723R is as shown below.

Figure 3.11: Current Sink Circuitry

MIC-3723/3723R User Manual 32
Where
VS: Power supply voltage of current sink.
RL: Load of current sink.
PD: Power dissipation of FET.
When you determine VS and RL, three conditions must be satisfied.
VS > (RL + 251) ( 0.02)
PD = (VS - (RL + 251) * 0.02) * 0.02 < 0.2

Example 1
If you use the internal power supply VS = +12 V,
RL must be less than 349 W. (12 / 0.02 - 251 > RL).
Select RL = 200, PD = 0.0696 < 0.2 OK!

Example 2
If you use the external power supply VS = +40 V,
RL must be less than 1.75 kW (40 / 0.02 - 251 > RL).
Select RL = 200 W, PD = 0.62 > 0.2 fail!
Reselect RL = 1 kW, PD = 0.3 > 0.2 fail!
Reselect RL = 1.5 kW, PD = 0.1 < 0.2 OK!

3.4 Field Wiring Considerations

When you use the MIC-3723/3723R to acquire data from external

sources, noises in the environment could significantly affect the accuracy
of your measurements if due cautions are not taken. The following mea-
sures will be helpful to reduce possible interference running signal wires
between signal sources and MIC-3723/3723R.

• The signal cables must be kept away from strong electromagnetic

sources such as power lines, large electric motors, circuit breakers or
welding machines, since they may cause strong electromagnetic inter-
ference. Keep the analog signal cables away from any video monitor,
since it can significantly affect a data acquisition system.

• If the cable travels through an area with significant electromagnetic

interference, you should adopt individually shielded, twisted-pair wires
as the analog output cable. This type of cable has its signal wires
twisted together and shielded with a metal mesh. The metal mesh
should only be connected to one point at the signal source ground.

• Avoid running the signal cables through any conduit that might have
power lines in it.

• If you have to place your signal cable parallel to a power line that has a
high voltage or high current running through it, try to keep a safe dis-
tance between them. Or, you should place the signal cable at a right
angle to the power line to minimize the undesirable effect.

• The signals transmitted on the cable will be directly affected by the

quality of the cable. In order to ensure better signal quality, we recom-
mend that you use the PCL-10168 shielded cable.
