Ammonia: DR 900 Analytical Procedure

The document describes a colorimetric method for measuring ammonia in water samples using a DR 900 colorimeter. The method involves reacting ammonia in the sample with reagents to produce a compound that results in a green color, the intensity of which corresponds to the ammonia concentration. Interferences from other substances are also discussed.

Ammonia

DR 900 Analytical Procedure AP-73/900

SPECIFICATIONS
Method: Colorimetric (DR 900)
Range: 0.04 to 0.50 ppm as NH3-N
Testing Time: 30 minutes

DESCRIPTION
Ammonia reacts with chlorine to form mono-chlo-
ramine. The resulting monochloramine reacts with
salicylate to form 5-aminosalicylate. This complex
is then oxidized in the presence of sodium nitro-
prusside catalyst to form a blue-colored compound.
The blue color is masked by the yellow color of
the excess reagent present, giving a green-colored
solution that is directly proportional to ammonia
concentration.
