Tools ,Materials and Equipment for Shaving and Tweezing

"shaver" is generally an electric face hair remover, "razor" is the blade version.

"clipper" would be a head hair cutting machine and "trimmer" is a bit generic - I have a
beard trimmer which is pretty much the same as hair clippers.

Tools for Shaving

Straight razor (cut-throat razor) are open steel blades, and were the traditional tool

used for shaving before the invention of the safety razor. -

Safety razor-- this design are not meant to be disposed of frequently, though their
cartridges are.

Head blade------A head blade is a razor specially designed for shaving the head.

Electric razor---Electric razors are safer than safety razors

Shaving brush -commonly used with shaving creams distributed in tubs and tubes and
with shaving soaps. It is used to work the cream or soap into a lather and apply the lather
to the face
Shaving cream- -use shaving cream to protect your skin

Tools, Materials for Tweezing

Tweezers- Although painful and time consuming, tweezers offer the most precision of
any method of hair removal
Types of Tweezers

1. Slant Tip Tweezers --the most popular and easy to use. ,best tweezers for eyebrow
shaping, as the slant follows the contour of the brow

2. Pointed Tip Tweezers --best for when ultimate precision is required e.g. the removal
of ingrown hairs, splinters, glass fragments or anything just below the skin's surface.

3. Pointed-Slant Tip Tweezers----As already stated, the pointed slant is designed to have
the best of both worlds.

Three important elements which make up a good and effective pair of tweezers are:

1.Alignment - the tips must be precisely aligned so that they meet properly, all along the

edge, to grasp the hair

2.Sharp Tips - to ensure that, once grasped, the hair does not slip when pulled to remove

3.Tension - ideally you need a gentle resistance when squeezing the two arms together

LO3 PERFORM COLD WAVING

Week 5-8

What is cold waxing?

Cold waxing is a technique in which wax is pre-applied to pulling strips. It can be a
lifesaver when you are short of time and cannot book a waxing appointment at the salon
for some reason.

How to use cold wax?

Following are the steps to use cold wax:

 Prepare your skin by exfoliating in advance using a loofah or body scrub. This is
because cold wax strips will adhere easily to the surface of smooth skin.
 Once you have dried your skin, firmly press the strip down in the direction of hair
growth
 Make the skin above the strip taut before pulling it off quickly in the opposite
direction of hair growth
 Repeat until all hair has been removed and clean off excess wax with a wipe, or
soap and water

Following are the benefits of a cold wax:

 Cold wax at home is extremely comfortable, especially in summer. For instance,

Veet cold wax strips are not only easy to apply but also stick easily to the tiniest
of hair.
 You can remove the growth in a matter of seconds.
 Cold waxing is also potentially less painful than warm waxing. This is because you
do not run the risk of burning your skin with overheated wax.
 It is also less messy, and you can dispose of the strips easily. It is also easy to use
the cold waxing technique for hard-to-reach contours of the body, such as the
bikini line.
 To use cold wax in these areas, cut the strips to fit that specific area, and these
can be reused repeatedly until it loses its grip.

LESSON 4: PERFORMS BODY SCRUB AND MASSAGE

WEEK 1-2 LO1:Perform client prior to body scrub

Body scrub is a popular body treatment that is basically a facial for the body: It
exfoliates and hydrates your skin, leaving it smooth and soft. A body scrub is done with
an abrasive material—usually sea salt or sugar—mixed with some kind of massage oil
and an aromatic like essential oils.

A Step-by-Step: Full Body Salt Scrub

https://www.dermascope.com/exfoliation/a-step-by-step-full-body-salt-scrub

1. Prepare the aesthetic bed by first laying down a blanket, followed by a sheet, plastic,
and two towels – one by the foot of the bed and the other near the client's head

2. Have the client lie on top of the towels, allowing them time to get comfortable and
relaxed.

3. Put on a clean pair of gloves and use a spatula to mix together six to eight scoops of a
salt scrub and six to eight pumps of a moisturizing lotion. NOTE: The amounts used will
vary from client to client depending on their height and weight.

4. Check the client's skin for lesions, cuts, and scratches, making note to avoid those
areas. NOTE: In order to keep the client as warm and comfortable as possible, apply the
scrub to one section of one side of the body at a time – starting with the feet and
working up the body – by pulling back the blanket, sheet, and plastic.

5. After applying the scrub to one side of the client's body, pour warm water into a large
bowl and wet the gloved hands.

6. If a shower is available, have the client wash their body without soap so that the
minerals from the treatment stay on the skin and continue to work

7. Once the client has been washed, hydrate their skin with a quality moisturizer,
massaging the lotion into the skin towards the heart.

Different types of scrub

While there may be variations in how the scrub is given, the main difference between
scrubs is usually just the product used.

Salt and oil: finely granulated salt is mixed with an essential, moisturising oil. The salt
might be sea or mineral

Sugar is also used, mixed with oils or creams

Loofah: some body scrubs use cream and a loofah to slough off dead skin cells

Herbal: a therapist may mix a herbal oil with the exfoliating scrub, such as rosemary,
lavender or aloe vera, depending on your skin type and whether the scrub is designed to
wake you up or relax you

Fruit (edible!): some body scrubs mix crushed seeds with fruit oils, oatmeal and other
edible products to nourish and soothe the skin

Tools ,Materials and Equipment

Sea salt - helps to cleanse pores deeply, balance oil production

Bath towels - used for drying or wiping a body or a surface.

Spa milk salt scrub -It remover dirt deposit and dead skin cells

from your body, giving you a new and radiant skin

LESSON 6: PERFORM FINAL CHECKING AND POLISH OUTPUT

WEEK 6-7 LO1: Checking of Output

Why Should I Get Scrubbed?

https://www.amospa.com/get-scrubbed-what-to-expect-from-a-luxurious-spa-
scrub/#:~:text=During%20a%20spa%20scrub%2C%20you,coffee%2C%20salt%20or%20nu

1. Accelerate Cell Turnover

Just as a good facial can help rid the skin of old, dead skin cells, so too will a good body
scrub. . A good, thorough scrub will leave you with silky skin that tans more easily and
evenly, as well as gorgeous glow.

2. Stimulate Collagen Production

By scrubbing the skin and encouraging dead skin cells to shed, new skin cells are
inadvertently brought to the surface. During this process, the turnover rate of all cells is
increased, including collagen and elastin. In other words, getting a good scrub regularly
can help boost collagen and elastin production which creates more youthful looking skin
texture.

3. Boost Circulation and Encourage Lympatic Drainage

During the treatment, your therapist will use a mixture of long strokes and short, circular
motions to hit pressure points while working the product on your skin. The combination
of pressure and strokes has the same benefits that a light massage has. It will help
improve blood circulation and encourage your lymph fluid to move from stagnant areas.

4. Reach Neglected Areas

You can expect a thorough scrubbing when you have it done professionally. In between
toes? Check. Thigh fold? Check. Basically, every nook and cranny including those that
have been neglected or forgotten about will be thoroughly scrubbed and left baby soft.

What to expect in body scrub?

1. During a spa scrub, you will be led into a treatment room.

2. Asked to change and lie down on an individual treatment slab.

3. Your body will be massaged with a lightly abrasive product.

Note: The scrub is usually made of natural ingredients such as clay, sugar, coffee, salt or
nutshell husks.

LESSSON 7 PREPARE CLIENT PRIOR TO BODY MASSAGE

Week 7-8 LO1 HOW TO PREPARE FOR A MASSAGE

Massage-the rubbing and kneading of muscles and joints of the body with the hands,
especially to relieve tension or pain.
HOW TO PREPARE YOUR FIRST MASSAGE

https://spatrainingacademy.edu/how-to-prepare-for-your-first-massage-therapy-
session/

1. .Make Sure the Room is Ready- Y ou will want to arrive early so you will have plenty
of time to prepare before the client arrives. Make sure the room is clean and warm and
that you have all the supplies you need on hand. You may want massage oils, tissues, a
trash can and towels or robes. A well-prepared room will help you feel more prepared as
well.

2. Tend to Your Physical Needs-Take a few minutes before the client arrives to prepare
yourself physically. Go to the bathroom, get a healthy snack and get a drink of water.
Take a few deep breaths and try to calm your nerves. You may also want to spend a few
minutes listening to calming music in the massage room. Do whatever you need to do to
relax.

3. Be Friendly, Yet Professional

Start the session off on the right foot by being friendly, yet professional. Introduce
yourself, ask how the client’s day is going, and ask what the client’s concerns are or why
they have come in today. This will help relax your nerves as you build a trust between
you and your client. It will also help your client to relax and trust you as well.

4. Realize That the Client May Be As Nervous As You Are

Sometimes it helps to realize that the client may be nervous as well. While some clients
may be completely comfortable with and familiar with the process, many will be
uncomfortable lying naked on a table. Keeping a relaxed and calming demeanor is
essential so you can help the client relax and enjoy their massage.

5.Don,t Be Afraid to Ask Questions

Quarter 4

ASSESS INTERVIEW CLIENT

LO 1: Assess client

Every client entering residential care should be given a comprehensive assessment to

identify individual needs, preferences, and strengths. The assessment is undertaken by
an interdisciplinary team and covers various aspects of their’ lives such as: physical,
spiritual, cognitive, social, mental, and emotional.

Draping the Client

Draping is a procedure done to ensure the privacy and comfort of the client/customer. A
drape may either be a blanket, towel or sheet.

Draping Procedures when accessing the abdominal area of a female client/customer:

A. Use of sheet and pillowcase (watch video)

B. Use of Towels (watch video)

One (1) towel is used for male and two (2) towels for female clients/customers. When
using a towel, fold the towel back or under to reveal the area to be massaged.

C. When turning a client/customer from Prone to Supine Position (watch video)

D. Placing the Bolster/s (watch video

The bolster comes in different shapes and sizes depending on the built of the
client/customers and areas of massage application, it can be a rounded pillow or
a rolled towel.

https://www.e-tesda.gov.ph/mod/hvp/view.php?id=1199

Client/Customer Positions

Proper positioning of the client/customer is important to make sure that the

client/customer is relaxed and comfortable throughout the massage session.

In supine position, the client/customer can either lay his/her back on the bed when
working on the anterior or front section of the body. In prone position, the client lays
face down the bed while the therapist is working on the posterior or back section of the
body.

Supine - nakatihaya

In the supine position, the person is lying horizontally on his/her back.

 Place bolster under the client’s ankles.

 Cover the eyes using clean linen.

 Be sure the neck is not flexed.

Prone- nakadapa

 Assist the client to the massage bed.

 Tell the client to lie face down in a horizontal position.

 The most supported areas in this position are anterior ankles and the face.

Note : Use a face rest frame or cushion (in the absence of face rest frame) to keep
your client’s/customer's neck straight while lying.

Benefits of Conducting a Client Assessment

 Opportunity to get to know the client as an individual

 Establish areas of potential risk
 Ascertain a client’s preferences and needs
 Acknowledgement of cultural, religious, and ethnic values
 Advocate freedom of choice and independence
Client Interview Questions You Should Be Ready to Answer
1. What Are Your Prices?
2. Plan your interview

3. You and your firm should appear professional to your client.

4. tell you their story or concerns, preferably in chronological order.

5. Avoid legal jargon, be respectful

6. Discuss legal fees (if applicable) and leave time for questions.

7.Finally, walk your client to the exit and thank them.

Preparing for a client interview?

1. Do your research.

2. Self-reflect on your strengths, weaknesses, and experience.

LO 2: APPLY WELLNESS MASSAGE TECHNIQUES

Body mechanics help a massage therapist to effectively perform massage without

compromising his/ her and the client's well-being. The proper stances used in Swedish
massage are:

o Bow Stance (Archer's Stance)

o Warrior Stance (Horse Stance)

Bow Stance

To do the Bow Stance one foot, called the lead foot, is positioned pointing towards the
direction of the movement while the other foot called the trail foot is pointing sideways
between 30 to 50 degrees.

Warrior Stance

Sometimes called the Horse Stance, Warrior stance is used when applying a massage that
requires compression and deep friction into a muscle.

Warrior Stance

In this stance, toes are pointed forward and feet positioned apart parallel to the hips.

Slightly flex the legs at the knees while keeping your back straight when raising or
lowering your body.

BASIC MANIPULATION AND TECHNIQUES

Different modalities make use of different massage techniques. A massage therapist

should be familiar with the different modalities in order to provide the client/customer
the service appropriate for him/her.

Swedish massage -makes use of different manipulation and strokes. It is characterized by

the use of five basic massage techniques: effleurage, petrissage, friction, tapotement and
vibration.

Effleurage

Effleurage or gliding is a type of manipulation that uses gliding movements of the palms,
fingers, and forearms over a portion of the client’s body with varying amounts of
pressure.

The different variations of effleurage are the following:

One-handed

Raking – is a technique that uses the the index and middle fingers, held together or
apart, thus forming a letter “V”, to glide toward one direction. Raking is used to check the
proper alignment of muscles.

Ironing - is a technique that uses the gliding movements of the palms, forearms and
knuckles. It calms the nervous system when done slowly. Slow gliding movements are
done to deepen the pressure applied on the muscles.

Circular – is a technique performed by gliding the hand in a circular motion around the
shoulder, hip, knee and abdomen. This technique relaxes the client and prepares the
area for deeper strokes.

Alternate hand

Raking – This technique uses two hands alternately gliding in a continuous movement
while maintaining contact with the skin and usually applied along the spine.

Circular/ Sun Moon – is a technique done by gliding one hand in an outward manner to
form a circular or crescent shape while the other hand follows the same motion.

Nerve stroke - is a technique done using the weight of the fingers or hands to apply light
or feather-like pressure as they glide down the body. This is used as finishing stroke in
massage therapy.

Petrissage/ Kneading

Petrissage/ Kneading involves repetitive compression and releasing of muscles. Its

variations may include one-handed, two-handed or alternate hand applications.

One-handed - uses the entire hand or palm to lift and roll the muscle away from the
bone, then release it with squeezing and compressive motion.

Two-handed

Praying Hands – use of both hands with fingers interlaced to squeeze and release the
tissues. This is usually applied over the length of the upper and lower extremities.

Ocean Waves – done using both hands to compress and lift the tissues while
simultaneously moving in opposite directions. It is typically applied across a larger
muscular area such as the back.

Alternate Hand – uses alternating movement of the hands to grasp, lift and compress
the superficial layer of tissues.

Fulling – done by using both hands to lift, compress and spread out the tissue laterally.

Skin Rolling – uses the fingers and thumbs to grasp, lift and compress the skin and
superficial fascia and involves rolling the skin as the fingers and thumbs move across the
treated area. This may be done in diagonal or transverse directions applicable over bony
areas.
Friction/Rubbing

Friction/Rubbing involves light, brisk or deep strokes by chafing or rubbing the skin. This
stroke produces heat on the skin and superficial layers of the muscles.

Superficial Warming/ Heat Rub – done by briskly rubbing the palms of the hands against
the area being massaged to produce heat.
Sawing – done by compressing the muscle firmly using the ulnar surface of the hand with
fingers extended while moving in back and forth motion without losing contact with the
skin.

Rolling - uses rapid back and forth movement of two hands to roll the client’s/customer’s
limb while moving perpendicularly along the limb.

Wringing – use of both hands to vigorously compress the muscle in opposite

direction, like wringing a cloth to squeeze the water out. This is best suited for arms, legs
and fingers.

Cross-Fiber/ Deep Transverse Friction – done by applying firm and consistent pressure
perpendicular to the muscle fibers. It is a very precise and penetrating form of friction
massage.

Chucking/ Parallel Friction - uses the back and forth movement of the thumb or fingers to
rub the superficial tissue parallel to the muscle tendons or ligaments. It is usually
performed with one hand over bony areas while the other hand supports the body part
being massaged.

Circular Friction - uses small, circular and gliding movements of the fingers or palms on
the superficial tissue around joints and bony areas.
Superficial Warming/ Heat Rub – done by briskly rubbing the palms of the hands against
the area being massaged to produce heat.
Sawing – done by compressing the muscle firmly using the ulnar surface of the hand with
fingers extended while moving in back and forth motion without losing contact with the
skin.

limb while moving perpendicularly along the limb.

performed with one hand over bony areas while the other hand supports the body part
being massaged.

Circular Friction - uses small, circular and gliding movements of the fingers or palms on
the superficial tissue around joints and bony areas.

Pinching/ Plucking – uses the fingertips to squeeze, pull and release the skin.

Hacking/ Chopping - done by striking the muscles with the sides of the hands.

Quacking - is a variation of hacking but performed with palms lightly pressed together.

Cupping - is done by striking the skin with the C-shaped palm curved downward.
Pounding/ Beating – done by striking the body surface using the sides of one or both
loose fists.
Rapping – done by striking the body surface using a loose fist with the palm facing down.
Rambling/ Diffused – is done with the free hand striking the dorsal surface of the other
hand placed over the area to be treated.

Clapping - uses the palm of both hands to alternately strike the body surface.
Tapotement/Percussion

involves quick and rhythmic striking using the hands and fingers
Vibration

is a type of stroke that involves rhythmic shaking of the limbs and body surfaces.

Fine – done by producing a light vibratory motion using the hand while keeping your
wrist and fingers relaxed.

Rocking - done by back and forth pushing of the client’s body with one hand and catching
it with another hand.

Coarse – done by grabbing a body part, usually a limb, with one or both hands and
shaking it vigorously.

Jostling – done by holding the body part, usually the limbs, and shaking it vigorously and
rhythmically.
