Activity 1. What would you do?

Directions: Read, comprehend, and carefully analyze the following situational dilemmas below.
Provide your decisions considering yourself that you are the primary person experiencing the
dilemmas in different situations. Write your answer in a short bond paper following the sampled
format as indicated.

MORAL DILEMMA NUMBER 1: A doctor refuses to give the terminal patient morphine, but the
nurse can see the patient is in agony.

 For me, why the doctor didn’t give the morphine because maybe he knows what is best for
the patient. It is the right of the doctor what is best for the patient in order to save the
patient that is why he refused it.

Activity 2. Transactional writing

Directions:  Give your analysis of this predicament. Here is the situation: A lot of
people have been violating the home quarantine that was imposed by the Government
because they need to work. Can you blame those people for going outside despite the
mandate of the Government to stay at home? Write your answers aligning it to the 7-
step model for ethical decision making.

MORAL DILEMMA NUMBER 2: A husband learns he has a terminal illness and he decides
to ask his wife for assistance in ending the pain before it gets too bad. If you are the wife what
would you do?
 We really know that terminal illness is a decease or condition which can't be cured and is
likely to lead to someone's death. It's sometimes called a life-limiting illness. if I am the
wife, and my husband told me that he had this decease I would probably bring him to the
hospital to check and get some medication that would doctor recommendations. Also as a

LESSON 2
Engaging Activity 1. UNDERSTANDING NATURAL LAW
[LO 1: recognize how St. Thomas Aquinas made use of ancient Greek concepts to
provide a rational basis to an ethical theory based on the Christian faith]
Directions: Research and discuss among the following topics guided by the natural law
of St. Thomas:
1. whether abortion is morally acceptable and in what circumstances

Abortion is such an immoral act -- evil by its very nature (intrinsically evil), since it
directly attacks the most fundamental human right. Nor can such an act be justified by
any utilitarian purpose, however good, since natural law forbids using an intrinsically evil
means to attain a good end. Abortion has never been purely a matter of individual
wellbeing or social gain, and this fixation leaves us with a hopelessly tangled personal
and political muddle that satisfies no one. In an effort to settle one of the most polarizing
issues in the world, she argues that morality is inextricably connected to the abortion
issue and takes the emphasis back to ethics. Building on the traditions of sociological
thought and moral philosophy, that true respect for human life and respect for individual
conscience require that we respect the right of a woman to decide. She notes that it is to
compromise her autonomy, dignity and agency, which are the core of her humanity, to
prohibit a woman from making her own decision to continue or end her pregnancy.

2. whether contractual labor is morally acceptable and why or why not

Contractual employee" includes one employed by a contractor or subcontractor

to perform or complete a job, work or service pursuant to an arrangement between the
latter and a principal. (d) "Principal" refers to any employer who puts out or farms out a
job, service or work to a contractor or subcontractor. Work is the duty of man. This duty
arises from the very needs of man's life, as well as from the meaning that work holds for
his perfection. Without work it is not possible either to sustain life or to reach the full
development of one's personality. Where parties have on-going relationships, such as
those between management and labour unions, moral means of self-regulation derived
from contracts are more likely to be successful. The paper describes how the existing
law and proposed reforms fail because they concentrate on equity as a feature of union
winning rates, and then outlines a strategy to exploit clear moral contractual obligations
and related behavioural requirements to establish a mechanism as equal as possible for
workers to vote up or down on unions.
3. whether same-sex couples have a right to marry

Marriage is both ubiquitous and central. All across our country, in every region,
every social class, every race and ethnicity, every religion or non-religion, people get
married. For many if not most people, moreover, marriage is not a trivial matter. It is a
Republic of the Philippines

key to the pursuit of happiness, something people aspire to—and keep aspiring to, again
and again, even when their experience has been far from happy. To be told “You cannot
get married” is thus to be excluded from one of the defining rituals of the American life
cycle.

The keys to the kingdom of the married might have been held only by private citizens—
religious bodies and their leaders, families, other parts of civil society. So it has been in
many societies throughout history. In the United States, however, as in most modern
nations, government holds those keys. Even if people have been married by their church
or religious group, they are not married in the sense that really counts for social and
political purposes unless they have been granted a marriage license by the state. Unlike
private actors, however, the state doesn’t have complete freedom to decide who may
and may not marry. The state’s involvement raises fundamental issues about equality of
political and civic standing.

Same-sex marriage is currently one of the most divisive political issues in our nation. In
November 2008, Californians passed Proposition 8, a referendum that removed the right
to marry from same-sex couples who had been granted that right by the courts. This
result has been seen by the same-sex community as deeply degrading. More recently,
Iowa and Vermont have legalized same-sex marriage, the former through judicial
interpretation of the state constitution, the latter through legislation. Analyzing this issue
will help us understand what is happening in our country, and where we might go from
here.

Before we approach the issue of same-sex marriage, we must define marriage. But
marriage, it soon becomes evident, is no single thing. It is plural in both content and
meaning. The institution of marriage houses and supports several distinct aspects of
human life: sexual relations, friendship and companionship, love, conversation,
procreation and child-rearing, mutual responsibility. Marriages can exist without each of
these. (We have always granted marriage licenses to sterile people, people too old to
have children, irresponsible people, and people incapable of love and friendship.
Impotence, lack of interest in sex, and refusal to allow intercourse may count as grounds
for divorce, but they don’t preclude marriage.) Marriages can exist even in cases where
none of these is present, though such marriages are probably unhappy. Each of these
important aspects of human life, in turn, can exist outside of marriage, and they can
even exist all together outside of marriage, as is evident from the fact that many
unmarried couples live lives of intimacy, friendship, and mutual responsibility, and have
and raise children. Nonetheless, when people ask themselves what the content of
marriage is, they typically think of this cluster of things.

Engaging Activity 2. IDENTIFYING NATURAL LAW

[LO 2: identify the natural law in distinction from the other types of law: eternal law and human
law]

Problem Analysis

The Problem of Overpopulation

The Catholic Church argues that artificial family planning methods are against natural law. It
only agrees with natural birth control. But the government says that overpopulation is a huge
social problem that needs to be addressed to solve human poverty. Politicians say that a huge
population requires sufficient resources. But the Church says that the problem is not in the
number of people but the rampant corruption among public officials.

1. Do you agree with the Church?

• Absolutely yes.

2. Would it be morally acceptable to use artificial methods of family planning?

• For me, I think it would be fine or morally acceptable to use artificial methods for
family planning. As a couple, they have the decision of using methods of family planning
or not. It is depends of them how they are going through.

3. Does the dynamism of the natural law mean that it has to adapt to the
circumstances of the present? Explain your answer.

• Base on the dilemma asserted that people should do the best for society and in
the family. Family planning occurs that it is also reasonable to be done by the couple,
but human existence is to do good things as they live. The church only wants us to do
good aspects, engaging in artificial methods is against the natural law and they just want
us to avoid evil doings.

[LO 3: apply the principle of natural law to contemporary moral issues.]

Persuasive Essay: Reflection

Instruction: Discuss the morality of the following:

1. Same-sex marriage

From my own perspective if it okay to marriage with the same-sex, I would probably
answer no. Because we really know that woman is to women and we can read it to the Bible
which Bible is the word coming from our God. We really know that is a sin because they against
the command coming from the Lord.

But, as of these days, many people engaging to this kind of relationship and LGBT’s
community is being recognized and they are proud to raise their flags. In my other side, even I
am not compatible to same sex marriage, as I refer that they are human too, I will respect and
support them all because we don’t have any things to do with their decisions in life. As long as
they love each other, we can’t ever do just to take them apart.

2. Surrogate

Surrogacy is an arrangement, often supported by a legal agreement, whereby a woman

agrees to bear a child for another person or persons, who will become the child's parent after
birth. Surrogacy will help to other. Surrogacy means something different to each person it
touches. For intended parents, it is the chance to finally complete their family and realize their
dreams of parenthood. For surrogates, it is the chance of a lifetime to give selflessly to another
family who needs them. For both parties, surrogacy is an extraordinary journey and a deeply
rewarding experience unlike any other. In this article, discover some of surrogacy’s top benefits
for the couples and individuals whose lives are changed by this experience.

3. Birth Control

Birth control, also known as contraception and fertility control, is a method or device
used to prevent pregnancy. Birth control has been used since ancient times, but effective and
safe methods of birth control only became available in the 20th century. By using Contraception
pills, even though the purpose of birth control is to prevent pregnancy, many women choose to
use contraception because of certain health advantages. For example, some hormonal birth
control methods may help regulate your period, reduce acne, and/or lower endometriosis-
related pain.

Birth control is important to those couple who are planning for the good of their family.
Many couple said it is very necessary to have birth control avoidance in poverty and suffering.

SCENARIO/S
1. Should I cheat on the exam or should I simply do what I can do to pass the
exam?
From my own experience, I should cheat on in terms of difficulties because I
want to pass the exam. We are all experience cheating and being cheated on. All of us
experienced it, so, we don’t have to deny it. A person who denies it are those who are
want to impress that they perfect in terms in school. Doesn’t mean we’re cheating, is we
are having a low understanding or how they say it “poor brain”, except we don’t read or
study the lesson or we just forgot what is does mean.

2. Should I copy and paste the contents of my project or should I write it on

my own?
For me, maybe I should copy and paste it some of it or just paraphrase it. I think I am
better to do this to prevent hassle and I can pass it on earlier. It helps me more to have an idea
and able to add my idea on it. I made that decision for easy way to create my project.

3. Should I go to play computer games with my friends or should I attend my class?

Play computer games or should I attend my class? For now, I choose to attend or stay in
the classroom because it’s time for class. I am not leaving at home during week days just to
play online game at computer. I am leaving at home for class. Shall I say, playing on computer
games is fun but we must think first that education is more important. As learners, we must to
do good something for ourselves.

4. Should I pay attention to the online class or should I just doodle around while the
class is going?

I am going to pay attention to the online class even though it is difficult for everyone but
this new normal learning, we still so lucky because we get some knowledge however it is little.

SCENARIO/S
1. Should I wear a mask when I go outside or should I just do what I am
comfortable with?
This time of pandemic, we really have to wear mask when we go out because we
really don’t know that people we meet are infected with the decease. Also, our opponent
cannot be seen which is the corona virus decease. Wearing a mask also is one of the
protocols that DOH requires us to wear; it helps us to prevent from the sick.

2. Should I follow medical protocols or should I just do what I want to do when I go

out?
I should follow the medical protocols because it the great way that DOH has
recommended to not get infected of the virus. In this time of pandemic, this protocols are
the best recommendation to all of us and it is for safety also and to not get infected by
the virus. So we really follow the medical protocols in order for us to be safe.

3. Should I sanitize my hand before interacting with people or should I just interact
with them the way I want to?

I should sanitize my hand first before I interact with others. It is better to get
yourself clean and hygienic before anyone else come close to you. My moral doing
would help me and other people close to me to be safe and secure through this time of
pandemic.

4. Should I share what I have or should I just prioritize myself?

I shall share what I have. As an understanding person, I will help those people
who really need it, because I know the feeling of being nothing at all.

SCENARIO/S
1. Should I steal from the rich to give to the poor? (Robin Hood dilemma)
Is a no for me; because from the word itself “steal” you’re stealing from
someone is a sin. Even though you’re stealing just to give to the poor but in the
name of your stealing, you have commit sin. It is better to give little with love
instead of giving but coming from stealing.

2. Should I kill someone to harvest the organs to save others? (Doctor’s dilemma)

For me, it is a no. from the world itself “killing”, it is the biggest mistake for
the Lord. We are human too but why we need to kill our fellowmen just for the
sake of someone lives. If it the time of passing away the life of a patient then let it
be and accept it, not to kill someone just for the sake of the patient who are in
agony.

3. Should I kill one to save others? (Train trolly dilemma)

The trolley dilemma and its variations demonstrate that most people
approve of some actions that cause harm, yet other actions with the same
outcome are not considered permissible. Not everyone answers the dilemmas in
the same way, and even when people agree, they may vary in their justification
of the action they defend. Like for me, as what I have answer below of this item is
the same. From the word itself you’re killing someone and you committed a big
sin.

4. Should I lie to save someone’s life? (The Killer’s friend dilemma)

If lying will save someone’s life, I think I will commit. Although
circumstances occurs to be tough to deal with, but if someone is at risk and need
to protect, I will do my part. For instance, I encounter a teenager stealing food
from the marketplace and then we chat for a while and ask him why he steals
food, hence, tears fall down from my eyes hearing those words from him that he
did it for his family are starving. Thus, I let him escape. The guards tried to look
for him and ask me if I see a teenager passing through and then I prevaricate.

Activity 1: Introductory Activity: Organ transplants
Directions: Answer the question in a paragraph form.

Scenario: Imagine you are a surgeon. Five patients in the hospital are in urgent need of
different organ transplants to survive. One of them needs a heart, one a lung, one a
liver, and the other two each a kidney. All five happen to have the same rare blood
type, so it is hard to find the right donor. At this time, a foreign traveler came to the
hospital for a simple body check. By chance, he has the same rare blood type as
theirs. With your expertise, as long as you use some simple medication to end the
life of the traveler painlessly and without the notice of others, then his organs can
save the five people awaiting organ transplants.
Question:
What would you do? Would you kill one person to save five people?
If I am the surgeon, in order to save the five patients who are in desperate
need of organ transplantation to survive, I will not kill the traveller. Deontological
ethics is about doing what is "right" rather than doing what is "good." It is nice to
save more lives in this situation, but it is wrong to kill someone who is innocent to
save those people in need. The right to do so in this case, in my view, is to find
donors even though it is difficult to find one. Doing what is right is upholding your
responsibility as well. Although doing "right" could produce unfavourable
outcomes, it is still better than doing wrong.

Case Study 3: Daniel in the Lions' Den

Daniel, the Jew, was one of three administrators in the Persian palace. Though
Daniel was a man in power, he was very dedicated and faithful to the Lord, the Jewish
God. Daniel prayed to God three times a day, every morning, noon, and evening, and
he never worshipped any other god or spirit. With the blessings of the Lord, he
distinguished himself from the other administrators and the Persian King wanted to set
him over the whole kingdom.

On hearing this, the other administrators envied Daniel and tried to find grounds
for charges against him and plotted to kill him, but in vain. Finally, they thought of a trap
to set him up. They asked the King to establish a royal statute that within thirty days,
whosoever shall ask a petition of, worship or pray to any god or man, save the King,
should be cast into a den of lions and be preyed by the lions.

Daniel was a very keen worshipper of the Lord. He took no notice of the ban and
kept worshipping and praying to God three times every day. When the administrators
against him were informed of his worshipping, they complained to the King and accused
Daniel of violating the prohibition, asking the King to throw him into the den of lions. The
King felt he was in a dilemma as he very much appreciated Daniel’s talents. He
regretted that he had issued such a senseless ban. Then, he suddenly realized that
there was not any evidence to verify the claim that Daniel had worshipped other Gods;
as long as he denied the accusation, he would be safe since there had not been any
proof.

On the thirtieth night after the order of the ban, the Persian King went to Daniel’s
home with his administrators. He asked Daniel, “I issued the ban on worshipping any
God and human beings except me - those who ignore the ban will be thrown into the
Lion’s Den. But now I think that this is a senseless order, and if I was allowed to choose
again, I would have never issued such a divine order. In the past few days, there had
been accusations that you have violated the ban. You are my most beloved servant. If I
do not see you violate the ban with my own eyes or hear you admit that you have
disobeyed the order, I would not believe in any accusation against you. Now I am at
your home and do not see you worship any other god. Can you tell me if you have
worshipped any other god in the past thirty days?”
Although the Persian King knew Daniel had disobeyed this ban, his words
implied Daniel’s denial of the administrators’ accusation. Finally, Daniel preserved his
faith and principle and admitted the charge in front of the King and the administrators,
though he understood the King’s thought. The King thus had no choice but to order the
soldiers to throw him into the den of lions.

Questions for discussion:

1. The administrators have no evidence to prove the accusation of ‘worshipping

another god’. Daniel would not be killed if he denied it. Why did he still make the
frank confession?
It's because Daniel had faith in his God. He felt that he would never be
ignored by God and would do what was right for his people. Also, God loved
Daniel because he was a humble man and prayed with all his heart on a regular
basis. "Do not be afraid, Daniel, for your words have been heard from the first
day when you set your heart to understand and to humble yourself before your
God" (Daniel 10:12).

2. From the perspective of deontology, do you think Daniel’s frank confession was a
moral decision?
From the standpoint of ethics, Daniel's confession was a moral judgment. It's
because telling the truth is always "right" in itself in Kant's deontological
philosophy, even though doing so could yield some unfavorable results.
Therefore, telling a lie, on the other hand, is always false.

3. From the perspective of utilitarianism, do you think Daniel’s frank confession was
a moral decision?
I think the confession of Daniel was a moral choice from the viewpoint of
utilitarianism. This is because Daniel prays for everyone. And also, for the benefit
of the managers who put the trap on him. According to the philosophy of
utilitarianism, as long as it creates maximum gains for many people, a utilitarian
does not care if an action is performed out of deceit, lies, or coercion.

From the quotes below, I have learned that we must do well because
every action caused what and who we really are. In order for us to be virtuous or
ethical person we really have a high principle of conduct. One becomes virtuous
by living an ethical life, following a moral code which respects others, treats
others with kindness and compassion, and is not engaging in corrupt, criminal or
malicious actions.
