3 Concepts
3.1 Pipe series
Dimensionless number related to the nominal outside diameter of a pipe and its wall thickness (designated
by S). On the basis of this number the wall thickness, s, is to be calculated as follows:
d
s=
2S + 1
where S is to be taken from table 1 of ISO 4065.
If the wall thickness is to be calculated on the basis of design stress (assumed to be 10 N/mm²) and working
pressure, the following equation is to be used:
s = pe, zul × d/2s v, zul + pe, zul
where
sv, zul is the design stress, in N/mm 2;
p e, zul is the allowable working pressure at 20 °C, in bar.
3.2 Standard dimension ratio
The ratio of the outside diameter of a pipe to its wall thickness. It is to be calculated as follows:
SDR = 2 S + 1 ≈ d/s
where S is to be taken from table 1 of ISO 4065.
4 Material designation
The material designation is based on the minimum required strength, MRS (i.e. the resistance to internal
hydrostatic pressure) in water at 20 °C for 50 years, as specified in DIN EN ISO 12162. The minimum required
strength for PVC-C 250 is 25 N/mm².
5 Safety factors
Safety factors shall be specified in the appropriate product standards. Minimum values for pipes made from
PVC-C are set at 1,6, according to DIN EN ISO 12162. In table 4, the allowable working pressures include a
safety factor of 2,5 for all temperatures.
6 Dimensions, designation and allowable working pressure
s
Designation of a pipe made from PVC-C, with an outside
diameter, d, of 32 mm and a wall thickness, s, of 3,6 mm.

added to the wall thickness; the outside diameter is the nominal size. The values were rounded off to a

Local increases in wall thickness of up to +0,2 s are permissible for s ≤ 10 mm, and of up to +0,15 s for
s > 10 mm. The mean of the measurements shall, however, still lie within the given limit deviations.

Allowable working pressure1)
1) The allowable working pressures given do not apply to pipes which are exposed to the effects of UV radiation.
Adding appropriate substances to the moulding material can reduce the negative effects of UV radiation where
the service life is less than ten years.
2) The bracketed values apply where testing can be shown to have been carried out for longer than one year at
95 °C.

6.4 Pipes conveying other fluids
Pipes which come in contact with aqueous fluids or fluids which are particularly hazardous are recommended
to have a lower S or SDR number.
7 Form supplied
The pipes are to be supplied in specified lengths subject to limit deviations of ±10 mm.
8 Marking
Pipes conforming to this standard shall bear the following information, marked indelibly at 1 m intervals:
Example:
– manufacturer’s identification xyz
– quality or inspection mark RAL
– material designation PVC
– DIN number DIN 8079
– S or SDR value S 4 or SDR 9
– outside diameter × wall thickness 32 × 3,6
– date of manufacture 01-04-97
– machine number 7
This marking is only to be used for pipes which are not covered in other product standards or other technical
rules.
Explanatory notes
With regard to the specifications for outside diameters, this standard corresponds to ISO 161-1; with regard
to the specifications for wall thickness, it corresponds to ISO 4065. The tolerances on outside diameter,
circularity and wall thickness conform to ISO 11922-1.
The pressure rating (PN) is no longer used for pipe designation in basic standards for plastics pipes. However,
for the purpose of comparison, table A.1 correlates the old PN values with the S and SDR values.

It should be noted that the pipe outside diameters were selected from a preferred number series.
The service life of PVC-C pipes at operating temperatures of up to 50 °C, previously given as fifty years, may
now be assumed to be at least one hundred years.
The nominal sizes and allowable working pressure to be used in particular applications will have to be included
in the appropriate product standards or other applicable technical rules.
According to current knowledge of the long-term stability of PVC-C it can be assumed that pipes conveying
water are capable of resisting the pressures given in table 4.
Where fluids are to be conveyed which could be hazardous if handled incorrectly, the pipe manufacturer should
be consulted.
