Unfortunately, Microsoft has ended support for Windows 7, but they still
provide the Windows Update service & there is a hack we can use to get
updates until 2023.
Check whether your version of Windows is 32-Bit or 64-Bit
➢ By opening Control Panel\System and Security\System – next to
‘System type:’, you will find out.
➢ If it says ‘32-Bit operating system’, this means you must use the
update files/folders with ‘32-Bit’ or ‘x86’ in their name.
➢ If it says ‘64-Bit operating system’, this means you must use the
update files/folders with ‘64-Bit’ or ‘x64’ in their name.
Firstly, make sure you have installed Service Pack 1 for Windows 7
➢ Check which Service Pack you are using by opening the Start Menu
– in the Search box, type ‘winver’ & click ‘winver’.
➢ Next to the version number, it should say the Service Pack number.
➢ If it says nothing, it means you’re using the RTM version – you
must upgrade to Service Pack 1.
➢ If it says ‘Service Pack 1’, you can continue installing the updates.
➢ If it says nothing, you must install Service Pack 1 (from:
https://filehippo.com/download_windows_7_service_pack_1/ (32-
Bit) or https://www.techpowerup.com/download/microsoft-
windows-7-service-pack-1/ (64-Bit)).
Go to Control Panel\System and maintenance\Windows Update & click
‘Change settings’ – under Important updates, select ‘Never check for
updates (not recommended)’.
Secondly, install some updates to make sure Windows Update works
➢ Install KB3020369: https://www.microsoft.com/en-
us/download/details.aspx?id=46827 (32-Bit) or
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=46817
(64-Bit)
➢ Then, KB3172605: https://www.microsoft.com/en-
US/download/details.aspx?id=53335 (32-Bit) or
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=53332
(64-Bit)
If Windows Update still doesn’t work, restart your computer & try again.

Then, install Internet Explorer 11 from: https://www.microsoft.com/en-

I would highly recommend downloading another browser (such as Firefox,
Edge, Opera or Chrome), then disabling Internet Explorer (in Control
Panel\Programs and Features\Turn Windows features on and off), as IE is
no longer supported by Microsoft so is prone to security holes (which
could give you viruses), and it is just a bad browser.

[email protected]Fourthly, install Convenience Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 (KB3125574)
This update includes all the updates from the release of Service Pack 1
(February 2011) to April 2016 – it is like a Service Pack 2.
First, you must install the April 2015 Servicing Stack Update
(KB3020369):
➢ 32-Bit: https://www.microsoft.com/en-
us/download/details.aspx?id=46827
➢ 64-Bit: https://www.microsoft.com/en-
us/download/details.aspx?id=46817
Then, you can install the Convenience Rollup (KB3125574):
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=3125574
Fifthly, install the latest version of .NET Framework, you can download
this from: https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet-framework.
Install all the updates through Windows Update
Firstly, restart your computer to make sure no processes are running.
After restarting, go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution & delete all the
contents of the folder.
(If your Windows 7 installation is on a different drive, replace the drive
letter (for example, 'D:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution')).
Go to Control Panel\System and maintenance\Windows Update & click
‘Change settings’ – under Important updates, select ‘Install updates
automatically (recommended)’).
In Control Panel\System and maintenance\Windows Update, click ‘Check
for updates’, wait for the check, then installing the ones that are
available.
➢ If it gets stuck on ‘Preparing to install…’, go to the start menu –
next to ‘Shut down’, make sure there is the Windows Update logo –
if there is, click it to install the updates whilst shutting down – you
will have to manually turn your computer back on to finish the
installations & carry on…
➢ If you don’t use Microsoft Edge or any language packs, hide these
updates (by right clicking & clicking ‘Hide update’).
➢ If, after restarting, your theme changes to Windows 7 Basic mode –
change the theme back to Aero by going to Control
Panel\Appearance and Personalisation\Personalisation & selecting
the Aero theme you'd like to use.
➢ If it won't allow you to change the theme back and you can't load
certain games after this, you may have to reinstall your graphics
driver.
➢ Hide any updates that refuse to install (by right clicking & clicking
‘Hide update’).

[email protected]Keep checking for updates until there are none left – you will have to do
this many times…
You have installed all the updates when you have checked for updates &
‘Windows is up to date’ appears.
Finally, make your computer able to get Windows 7 Updates until 2023 by
being able to install the Post-EOL Updates
Firstly, install the following updates:
Once again, go to Control Panel\System and maintenance\Windows
Update & click ‘Change settings’ – under Important updates, select ‘Never
check for updates (not recommended)’.
(Don’t worry if some of these updates don’t apply to your system)
➢ KB4490628:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=449062
8
➢ KB4474419:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=447441
9
➢ KB4531786:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4531
786
➢ KB4555449:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4555
449
➢ KB4538483:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4538
483
(Install the update that is a few hundred KB first, then install the
update that is a few MB)
➢ KB4575903:
http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB45759
03
➢ KB3138612:
https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB3138
612
Then, install BypassESU to be able to install these updates:
➢ I would recommend temporarily disabling your antivirus.
➢ Then, search for ‘services.msc’ & click ‘Services’, then click
‘Windows Update’, then ‘Stop the service’.
➢ Once again, restart your computer to make sure no processes are
running. After restarting, go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution &
delete all the contents of the folder.

[email protected] (If your Windows 7 installation is on a different drive, replace the
drive letter (for example, 'D:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution')).
➢ You can find out the updates ‘from ## Recommended Updates’ &
download the latest version of BypassESU under ‘## Download’:
https://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/bypass-windows-7-
extended-security-updates-eligibility.80606/ (you have to sign up
with your email & password – this is free & safe) (under ‘##
Download’, click one of the links & download the file – make sure it
is the latest version), then extract the file – the password is ‘2020’.
➢ Open the folder, then the file ‘LiveOS-Setup’ as administrator (right
click & click ‘Run as administrator’).
➢ Wait for the prerequisites to be checked…
➢ Press ‘1’ to install (or to update from the previous version).
➢ Wait for the patches to be applied…
Then, install all the updates:
➢ If you have disabled your antivirus, reenable it.
➢ Go to Control Panel\System and maintenance\Windows Update &
click ‘Change settings’ – under Important updates, select ‘Install
updates automatically (recommended)’).
➢ In Control Panel\System and maintenance\Windows Update, click
‘Check for updates’, wait for the check.
➢ If your previously hidden updates appear, (particularly Microsoft
Edge & the language packs) hide all these, install any updates
available, restart, then check for updates again.
➢ After successfully checking for the new updates, there should be 2
rollup updates for Windows & .NET Framework with the numbers of
the current month (or the previous month, if it hasn't been Patch
Tuesday yet (the second Tuesday of each month) - for example, if it
is February 2021, its name will have '2021-02' in it, maybe as well
as some updates for Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows
Malicious Software Removal Tool & Servicing Stack Updates. Install
these.
Once again, keep checking for updates until there are none left…
Microsoft keep trying to find ways of blocking these patches in the
later updates – if you find that when you install future updates &
they refuse to be installed, go to this website or my OneDrive &
see if there is an update available for BypassESU (a higher version
number) – if there is, you will have to manually install it, in the
same way we have just installed the program.
