Bearing Capacity

This document discusses bearing capacity and shallow foundations. It defines key terms related to bearing capacity, provides example calculations, and asks multiple choice and free response questions about determining bearing capacity, factor of safety, and sizing foundations. The document covers how water table, soil type, load eccentricity, and soil shear strength parameters impact bearing capacity. Example problems calculate ultimate and allowable bearing capacity for strip and square footings in sand and clay soils.

A footing 2.25*2.25 m is located at a depth of 1.5 m in a sand layer, the shear
strength parameters to be used in design being c` = 0.0 and Φ` = 38˚.
Determine the ultimate bearing capacity:
(a) if water table is well below foundation level and,
(b) if water table is at surface. The unit weight of the sand above the water
table is 18 kN / m3, the saturated unit weight is 20 kN / m3.

7- A strip footing is to be designed to support dead load of 500 kN / m` and an
imposed load of 300 kN / m` at a depth of 0.7m in a gravelly sand layer.
Characteristic values of shear strength parameters to be used in design being
c` = 0.0 and Φ` = 40˚.
a. Determine the Required width of footing if (lumped) factor of safety is 3.0
against shear failure is specified and assuming that the water table may rise
to foundation level.
b. Would a foundation of that width satisfy the bearing resistance limit state?
The unit weight of the sand above the water table is 17 kN / m3, and
below the water table, the saturated unit weight is 20 kN / m3.

8- A footing 2.0*2.0 m is located at a depth of 4.0 m in stiff clay of a
saturated unit weight of 21 kN / m3. The undrained shear strength at a depth
of 4.0 m is given by characteristic parameter Cu = 120 kN/m2
(Φu = 0.0˚). The foundation supports a permanent load of 1200 kN and a
variable load of 700 kN . What is the actual used factor of safety?

kN/m, respectively. The eccentricity of the base reaction is 0.36 m.
