Optimal Sleep Directions: Vastu Insights

The document discusses the effects of sleeping direction according to Vastu and medical sciences. Sleeping with the head facing north is considered the worst direction and can increase blood pressure, disturb sleep cycles, and reduce melatonin production. Sleeping with the head facing south is generally the best direction and promotes sound sleep, health, wealth and happiness. East is also beneficial but southeast should be avoided, while west can help with business but northwest should be avoided. The magnetic fields of the earth and human body are believed to interact in a way that affects sleep when facing certain directions.

EFFECT OF DIRECTIONS ON SLEEP

Best Direction to Sleep as Per Medical and Vastu Sciences And

The Effect of North
Vastu Acharya Dr Venugopal Rao Veeramaneni
Ph.D., in Medicinal Chemistry & Vastu Sciences

Sleep is essential and crucial for both physical and mental health. It is
also known that sleep can also be controlled by ourselves and our habits. The
knowledge about the power we have to control our sleep which influences
our metabolism is thus very important for one and all. According to the Vastu
sastra the directions are said to play a very important role and have an effect
on the quality of our sleep.
According to the Vastu Sciences, the Indian Traditional Architecture, as
well as Medicine & Bio Engineering, they have researched and given
specifications about the direction of bed and the position of head while
sleeping which has powerful effects on health. The Vastu sastra considers four
basic directions in influencing the quality of sleep. This has been proved by
Indian and Chinese philosophy too.
Sleeping with Head Towards East: East is the source of more energy and
power as per Vastu. This Energy is derived from the Sun rise which will help
create good health. If you place your head towards east while sleeping, then
you would certainly feel better in the morning. It triggers solutions that can
help you overcome health-related problems. This position is also good for
students, as it increases memory and concentration. East enhances memory,
health and spiritual inclination and leads to higher concentration and
retention power. Also the energy from the sun enters from the head and
leaves through the feet by creating a cool head and warm feet.
Note: Head facing towards East is rewarding but head position at East
of South East should be avoided.

Sleeping with Head Towards West: This position is not as good as East or
South, but it helps us in succeeding and gaining more profits in business by
generating great Ideas. Vastu Shastra allows keeping your head towards
west while sleeping. Also, this direction can relieve you of any unwanted
negative energies in your life. Also the energy from the sun enters from the
feet and leaves through the haed by creating cool feet and a warm head.
Note: We should wake up before the sun rises; Sun, i.e., Sun god rises in the
East in the morning hours, because of this reason we should not place our
feet towards east i.e. towards Sun God. Other reason is that energy from the
Sun in the morning enters from the feet towards the head.
Head facing towards West is good but avoid head location at West of North
West.
Sleeping with Head Towards South: This is the right sleeping position
according to Vastu, especially if you are in the northern hemisphere. This
direction gives you sound sleep and increases wealth and happiness. South
gives us fame, name, relaxation, skills and good relationships. All these can
be enhanced when you place your head in the southern part from the
centre of your home in any bedroom. According to magnetic pole theory, a
mutual attraction between the head and the south (head positive & south
negative) creates a harmonious exchange that draws energy into the body,
rather than out, as in the case of North.
Note: Head facing towards South is advisable but avoid head location at
South of South West.
Sleeping with Head Towards North and Its Effect on Animals: This is the
one direction that should be completely avoided while placing our head to
sleep. Our heart is not exactly in the middle of our body but three-fourths of
the way up helping it to pump blood better against gravity and the arteries
that go upwards towards the brain end up in very fine and fragile capillaries
that cannot handle high blood pressures as well as the arteries and capillaries
of other organs. They are almost hair-like and cannot take even a single extra
drop of blood. When that extra blood is pumped in, they burst leading to
haemorrhages. If you sleep in this direction, blood starts flowing more towards
your head owing to the Earth’s magnetic field. You wonder why? Your blood
(Haemoglobin) has large quantities of iron in it. The Earth’s magnetic pull
increases the blood flow towards the head without you being aware of it. If
the flow increases, it could lead to haemorrhage. Most of us live with little
amounts of it, but if it takes place on a massive scale the result could turn
fatal. At the same time, these haemorrhages can cause your brain to slacken
and increase the rate of the fall in your memory graph.
When the body is positioned horizontally, you can immediately make
out that your pulse rate drops. The body makes this adjustment because if
blood is pumped at the same level, too much will go into your head, causing
damage. Now, if you place your head to the north and stay that way for 5 to
6 hours, the magnetic pull will cause increased pressure in your brain’s vessels.
If you are beyond a certain age and your blood vessels are weak, you could
have haemorrhages and paralytic strokes. Or, if your system is sturdy and
these things don’t happen to you, you could get up agitated because there
is more circulation in the brain than there should be when you are sleeping.
We also learned that the earth has a magnetic pole extending from
North to South, with the positive pole at the North and negative pole at the
South. Consider the idea that the human being is also like a magnetic pole,
with the top of the head positively charged and the bottom of the feet
negatively charged. If you grab two magnets and try to place the positive
poles together, they repel. If you lay with your head to the North, there are
two positive poles at work trying to repel each other. Earth pole will always
win, and we will wake up feeling exhausted from the subconscious battle our
head has been ensuing all night.
This magnetic effect affects the circulation of blood causing stress,
illness and disturbances in mind.
If you are in the northern hemisphere (north of equator), do not sleep
with your head in the north direction. According to Vastu, it is the worst
sleeping direction and causes nightmares for the above mentioned reasons.
But if you are in the southern hemisphere (in countries like Australia,
South Africa, New Zealand, Zimbabwe, Brazil) then the opposite rules apply.
Sleeping towards the South direction would bring bad effects on the body,
while sleeping with head towards the North direction would be okay.

Earth’s Electro Magnetic Field also affects the Melatonin production in

the body. Melatonin is a hormone produced by the Pineal Gland from
Serotonin. Pineal Gland is located near the centre of the brain. Melatonin
hormone is responsible for the sleep-wake cycle in all animals. The Magnetic
Field created in the North & South Poles affects the Melatonin production in
our bodies which causes changes in the sleep cycle. Disturbances in the
sleep cycle can lead to various neurological disorders including depression.

One of our Spiritual quotes says, “Only dead people sleep pointing
North.” It is a Hindu custom to arrange a corpse so that the head of the
deceased is pointing north until cremation. The Hindu belief is that North is
the route that the soul takes to exit the body. Because of this notion North
sleeping is thought to be desirable only for lucid dreaming and astral travel.

It is also scientifically confirmed with strong evidence that it is not

advisable to sleep keeping head towards North. A Team of Indian scientists &
doctors from HIMS, Dehradun worked on medical students by asking them to
sleep in all 4 directions for 12 weeks in each direction and it was observed
that Systolic blood pressure (SBP), Diastolic blood pressure (DBP) , Heart Rate
(HR) and Serum cortisol were lower in subjects who were instructed to sleep
towards the South direction as compared to east & west. Blood Pressures of
those students that slept towards North were found to be abnormal.

A Team of Doctors & Scientists from The School of Public Health and
Community Medicine, University of Washington & Fred Hutchinson Cancer
Research Centre, Seattle have performed a research on a group of people
and reported in The American Journal of Epidemiology that Electro Magnetic
Field has effects on Sleeping pattern in humans.
A Team of Doctors & Bio Medical Engineers from Saint Louis University &
James Madison University, Harrisonburg performed research on rats to
understand the effect of Electro Magnetic Field on Melatonin production and
confirmed that EMF reduces Melatonin production which leads poor sleep
followed by unusual behaviour.
Considering the above evidences, Vastu Sciences teaches you that if
you sleep with your head to the North, you may experience misery,
frustration, crankiness, lack of emotional stability, diminished willpower and
physical elements.
Final words on Sleeping: South is given the Priority over East, followed by
West but NEVER NORTH.
