1. TERMS AND DEFINITIONS


• Owner/Client: Abadan Petrochemical Company

• EPC Contractor: Butane Procurement & Engeneering Services Company, Shall Mean
the Contractor Responsible For Engineering, Procurement & Construction of the Project.

• Vendor: The manufacturer /manufacturer's representative selected by the contractor &


approved by the client to supply equipment tools.

• Will: Is normally used in connection with the action by the "company" rather than by
a contractor, supplier or vendor.

• May: Is used where a provision is completely discretionary.

• Should: Is used where a provision is advisory only.

• Shall: Is used where a provision is mandatory.

2. SCOPE
2.1 This specification covers flange gaskets for piping system.

2.2 Gaskets shall be furnished to the sizes and ratings, etc. as specified in the purchase order.

2.3 Manufacturer shall be Vendor List of client.

Notes:

• Any deviation from this specification shall be clearly mentioned in the vendor’s proposal.
In case of any deviation between the statements of this spec and also between this spec
with referenced standards, project engineering proposal shall be considered.

3. CODES AND STANDARDS


3.1 Except as supplemented or amended by this specification CAF gasket and spiral wound
ones shall be manufactured and tested in accordance with:

API Standard 601

Flat Gasket shall conform to ANSI 16.21


Ring joint Gasket and spiral wound Gasket shall conform to ANSI 16.20
Standard Practice MSS-SP 44

3.2 All requirement contained in this specification shall be considered as additions to or


clarification for implementing the above mentioned standards.

3.3 All codes and standards quoted herein shall be the latest editions and revisions such as
IPS-M-PI-150.

4. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
4.1 The following types of gaskets are acceptable subject to conforming to the requirement of
this specification.

a) Non-metallic type consisting of a flat continuous ring.


b) Combination type consisting of either a metallic core and a non-metallic casing, or a
metallic retainer with a non-metallic insert.
c) Metallic type (ring joint type)

5. RATING
5.1 Gaskets shall be suitable for service with the fluid and maximum design and operating
pressures and temperatures specified in the purchase order.

5.2 Gaskets shall be capable of withstanding a hydrostatic pressure of at least 1.5 times the
design pressure without any detrimental effect on sealing properties in service.

5.3 All gaskets shall be clearly identified by the supplier with flange size, rating and the
purchase order reference.

6. MATERIALS
6.1 Non-metallic gaskets shall be manufactured either from graphite with an approved binder,
or other suitable material already proven in service and approved by the purchaser.

6.2 Spiral wound type;

6.2.1 The metal winding shall be 18 chromium 8 nickel, ANSI type 316, and stainless
steel.

6.2.2 The filler shall be of graphite strip, made with a suitable binder.

6.2.3 The centering ring shall be of carbon steel plate coated with cadmium or epoxy
powder with electrostatic method to resist atmospheric corrosion.

6.2.4 For spiral wound gaskets inner & outer ring shall be considered.

6.3 Ring joint gasket manufactured from stainless steel 316 and surface roughness shall be
1.6 micro meter.

6.4 All materials shall be free from age hardening properties which may ultimately impair
their sealing properties.

6.6 Minimum allowable carbon content in graphite layers shall 0.98%Wt in spiral wound
Gasket.

6.7 For ring joint Gasket, casting quality is not acceptable.

6.8 Raw material certificate shall be submitted in accordance with the latest edition of
EN10204 type 3.1 requirements before manufacturing.

6.9 Chemical, hardness and roughness test shall perform on final product according to the
ASME B16.20 and ASME B16.21.

5.10 other mechanical tests and metallography may be requested by client if originality and/or
traceability of documents can not be proved by manufacturer.

6.11 All types of gaskets shall have non-asbestos quality.

7. CHARACTERISTICS AND DIMENSIONS


7.1 Gasket characteristics and dimensions shall conform to the following.

a) Up to and including 24 inch nominal size ANSI-B 16.5 appendix E.


b) Above 24 inch and up to and including 36 inch nominal size
MSS-SP. 44

The ID of gasket (G) shall be as listed.

OD (R) shall be increased to bolt BCD minus one bolt diameter of flange.

c) Above 36 inch nominal size


In accordance with accepted practice, shall be extrapolated from MSS-SP-44.

d) All ring joint gaskets dimensions shall conform to ASME B16.20.


e) All gaskets shall provide a continuous contact face to their adjacent flanges.

8. STRESS CONDITIONS
8.1 The supplier shall provide the recommended torque to be applied to stud bolts for each
size of flange for which gaskets are furnished.

9. REPORTS AND CERTIFICATES AND DOCUMENTS


9.1The Supplier shall furnish the purchaser with the followings (6 sets)

a) Catalogs
b) Manufacturing certificate
c) Certified reports giving chemical analysis and physical properties of materials.
d) Hydrostatic test certificates
e) Material test certificate (MTC) shall be supplied in accordance with last edition of
EN10204 type 3.1 requirements.
