Research Assistant: Semra Horuz
Tue: 10:00 - 13:00, 14:00 - 18:00 / Fri: 14:00 - 18:00

Course Description

The  senior  year  design  studio  puts  emphasis  on  the  designer’s  responsibility  to  understand  the
reciprocal  relationship  between  historic  and  contemporary  contexts  and  encourages  added-value
solutions  through  program  suggestions,  spatial  organization  and  material  selection.  Throughout  the
semester  the  participants  will  develop  and  design  an  interior  space  articulated  according  to  new  users,
functions  and  materiality  within  individualized  approaches.  Each  participant  is  expected  to  analyse,
question  and  critically  propose  a  program  and  develop  technical  detailing  encompassing  from  urban
contextual  decisions  to  the  1/50,  1/20,  1/5  and  1/1  scale  specifications.  Principles  of  using  natural  and
artificial  light,  use  of  color,  indoor  climatic  conditions  for  providing  comfort  will  also  be  explored  as
fundamental aspects of interior space.

Objectives

This  course  aims  to  foster  participants’  understanding  of  transforming  an  existing  structure;  encourages
them to propose critical programs and promotes their ability to express the language of form and material.
The  exercises  in  the  course  are  devised  to  develop  individual  scenarios  and  transform  existing  structures
with formal and technological requirements accordingly.

Requirements & Outcomes

Participants are expected to finalize the semester with the following outcomes:
Individualized Program / Scenario
Critical understanding and intervention to the existing structure/building/location
Program/Function/User correspondence
Material/Color/Pattern/Atmosphere/Ambiance decisions
1/1 Production details

Project & Process

Under the Bridge, A Kitchen

The  focus  of  this  semester  is  the  notion  of  ‘kitchen’  in  the  broadest  sense,  from  sourcing  to  preparation;
from  preservation  to  cooking;  from  serving  to  eating;  from  gathering  to  cleaning.  The  ‘Kitchen’  as  a  space
and  as  metaphor  will  be  researched,  analyzed  and  interpreted  in  order  to  suggest  a  program  specifically
for  Golden  Horn  Bridge.  Connecting  one  of  the  most  hectic  parts  of  Istanbul,  Golden  Horn  Bridge  will  be
the project site with a focus on potential and existing interiors under the bridge.

The  course  consists  of  different  phases  for  the  development  of  the  project.  As  participants,  you  will
undertake  research  and  experimentation as an integral part of the design process. You will prepare weekly
reports  on  your  experience  and  achievements.  Individual  critiques  will  guide  this  process.  Participation  to
the  Studio  is  assessed  not  only  through  individual  works,  but through the degree of your involvement and
engagement  with  the  discussions  taking  place;  your  verbal  and  visual  skills;  as  well  as  your  abilities  of
commentary  and  reaction,  both  on  your  own  and  your  fellow  students’  works.  This  will  be  manifested
through  an  active  presence  during  our  meetings,  and  the  table  crits.  There  will  be  also  design  charrettes
during the Tuesday morning sessions to boost your design process.
