5 VALVE SELECTION 6
1 SCOPE
This specification details the minimum acceptable standard for the Supply of block valves to
be installed in pipelines for Medco E&P Indonesia. The Specification applies only to pipeline
which are designed and constructed to one of the following codes:
Only pipelines operating in the range from 0oC to 100oC are covered. Small bore drain and
by-pass valves to 1 inch are excluded.
The following codes and standards shall form a part of this Specification. The requirements
defined therein shall be applicable:
3 DESIGN
3.1 General
- Flanged ends
- Trunnion mounted ball for ANSI Rating 600# and above, Floating Ball for ANSI
Rating 300# and below
- Low friction bearings
- Floating seats
- Body vent for block and bleed duty
- Emergency secondary sealant ports for stem and seats (Class 600 and above)
- Operating mechanism
Valves in the ANSI range Class 150 to Class 1500 shall conform to API Standard 6D.
Valves in the API range 3000 to 5000 inclusive shall conform to API-6A. All valves
shall be supplied complete with the appropriate API monogram.
3.3 Materials
3.4 Seals
Seat Inserts Teflon, Nylon Viton. Filled TFE acceptable below 1000 psig.
3.5 Bearings
Valve balls shall be mounted on trunnions with all ball loads taken on low friction
trunnion bearings. Bearings shall be Teflon or TFE based.
Valves shall be equipped with sealant injection ports complete with non-return valve to
provide for emergency seat and stem sealing.
The valve body shall be tapped and plugged with 1/2 inch NPT to permit block and
bleed service.
3.8 Operators
Valve 6-inches and larger shall be supplied with gear operators. Four-inch valves
3000 psig MOP and above shall also be gear operated. All other valves shall be
furnished with wrench operators. All valves shall positively identify open and closed
position.
3.9 Marking
All valves shall be marked and filled with nameplates in accordance with Section 7 of
API-6D and MSS SP-25.
4 FABRICATION
4.1 General
Valves shall be fabricated and assembled in accordance with API-6A or API-6D and
with accepted good practice. The manufacturer shall carry out all non-destructive
tests necessary to verify the quality of castings, forgings and fabricated components.
4.2 Testing
All valves shall be subject to hydrostatic shell and seat tests by the manufacturer in
accordance with API-6D Section 5 and MEP-P-ES-006. The manufacturer shall
furnish test certificates to the COMPANY.
4.3 Inspection
The COMPANY may inspect or may appoint a third party inspector to inspect the
manufacture of the valves and to witness tests. The manufacturer shall afford access
to the inspector as required by the API Codes and by MEP-P-ES-006.
4.4 Painting
All valves shall be shot, grit or sand blasted to near white metal finish (NACE No. 2)
and shall be coated with an inorganic zinc silicate primer in accordance with the
Hardwood, 1/2" minimum thickness protectors shall be fitted, covering the whole face
of both flanges.
The valves shall be wrapped in waterproof plastic and shall be securely mounted in
robust wooden crates to prevent movement during shipment. Handwheels and
wrenches shall be shipped detached.
The crates shall be of export quality and shall be sufficiently strong to withstand
handling by forklift and wire rope slings.
Crates shall be clearly marked on top and on two sides with the Purchase Order
number, the Consignee's name and address and other data as specified on the
Purchase Order.
