Involvement of BS Criminology Students in Peace and Order and other Related
Activities in Pangasinan State University - Binmaley Campus
CHAPTER I
Rationale
BS Criminology students help maintain peace and order in the school campus. In
the conduct of important events and activities when many students may fail to observe
orderliness and organization, BS Criminology students play an important role in
overseeing events. They help in preventing chaos and ensuring that the events and
activities will flow smoothly. In turn, the school was able to give them first-hand
experience in maintaining peace and order, which is one of the most important roles of
police officers.
In line with this, the research seeks to discover more ways on how BS
Criminology students will be able to help maintain peace and order in the campus, and
what are the ways in which the university can enhance the first-hand learning experience
of the students.
Conceptual Framework
How BS Criminology students will be able to help maintain peace
and order in the campus, and what are the ways in which the
University can enhance the first-hand learning experience of the
students.
The survey or comments from Pangasinan State Review from existing data of Police
University Binmaley Campus will show how officers’ practices on how they maintain
satisfied they are with the service of peace and order; these practices will apply
Criminology students. They will also give to the BS Criminology Students deployed in
suggestions on how BS Criminology students Pangasinan State University Binmaley
will maintain peace and order and prevent Campus
chaos.
Statement of the Problem
BS Criminology students help maintain peace and order in the campus, thus it is
important to learn more about their contributions. The researchers seek to identify more
ways in which the students can improve in terms of creating and maintaining peace and
order, and how the university can enhance the students’ learning experience.
CHAPTER II
Review of Related Literature
As the former UN Secretary General said: “Education is, quite simply, peace-
building by another name." Peace and order is an essential ingredient in maintaining
economic development, social order and political stability. A condition of peace and
order facilitates the growth of investments, generates more employment opportunities and
attracts more tourists. Economic development generally refers to the sustained, concerted
actions of policymakers and communities that promote the standard of living and
economic health of a specific area. Peace refers to absence of hostility. It refers to an
environment that is characterized by healthy interpersonal and international relationships,
acknowledgment of equality and fairness. The following are eight pillars of peace
(Robiolle, 2013):
● a well functioning government,
● a sound business environment,
● an equitable distribution of resources,
● an acceptance of the rights of others,
● good relations with neighbors,
● free flow of information,
● a high level of human capital,
● low levels of corruption.
While the aforementioned statements define peace and order at a national and
societal level, it can also prove to be of importance to schools and universities. Peace and
order is an important factor that contributes to the quality of education in schools. Having
a safe environment to learn at will help improve the students’ overall academic
performance. Meanwhile, it is also important that students, especially those studying
criminology, learn that peace and order is very important, because they will be one of the
future policymakers and peacekeepers of the society.
In line with this, schools have the responsibility to promote and maintain peace
and order in the campus. The following are ways on how schools can help foster a more
peaceful world (Shaffer, 2015):
● Model kindness and empathy
● Repair, don’t punish
● Create a democratic space
● Use experiential learning
● Give a voice to the excluded
● Encourage collaboration in diverse groups
● Discuss controversial issues
● Integrate service learning
One of the key interventions in promoting peace through education is development
of conflict-sensitive education policies and plans. This entails conducting conflict
analysis on education systems, structures and delivery to identify the drivers of conflict
and violence, and the dynamics therein leading to development of concrete and realistic
intervention that leverage on the capacity for peace through education.
There should be a paradigm shift towards programs that encourage maximum
realization of an individual’s potential and optimal development of human capital
(Mwaniki, 2017).
While schools have the ultimate responsibility in maintaining peace and order in
the school, it is also important that students help in its promotion as well. “Children need
to practice, from very, very early on, how to take action, to solve the problems in their
community, to have a positive effect,” says Diazgranados Ferráns. “They don’t need to
wait until they grow up to change the world.”
While the word “children,” might not make any sense to describe and relate to
criminology students, what Ferráns said is undeniably indispensable. It is important that
students of criminology will have practical experiences related to policymaking and
peacekeeping inside the school campus.
CHAPTER III
Research Design & Research Method
The researchers used a quantitative research approach, wherein, it will
focus on utilizing descriptive research method that enabled the researchers to gather data
and information about the involvement of BS Criminology students in peace and order
and other related activities in Pangasinan State University - Binmaley Campus.
Descriptive research method is a theory-based design method which is created by
gathering, analyzing, and presenting collected data. The researchers utilized related case
studies and other related literatures and survey questionnaires to obtain descriptive
information using BS Criminology students of Pangasinan State University - Binmaley
Campus as the center of the research.
Locale of the Study
The study was conducted at the criminology department of Pangasinan State
University - Binmaley Campus.
Respondents of the Study
The researchers aimed to conduct the survey among the 100% population of the
criminology students of Pangasinan State University - Binmaley Campus. However, to
account for the current situation of online classes due to the community quarantines, the
researchers conducted the survey among only the 25% of the criminology students.
Total Population of Criminology Students of Pangasinan State University * 25% = N
Instrumentation
The instrument that will be used to gather the quantitative data that will be used to
derive the findings of this study is survey questionnaire.
The survey questionnaire included the following questions:
