Excessiveness in anything can cause harm to anyone, which leads to a habit or addiction that
may affect self-control. If this practice remains without proper treatment, it may results to adverse
effects in social life as portrayed in the movie “Confession of a Shopaholic 2009” which shows the
protagonist’s compulsive buying disorder.
As I have watched the movie, I made a realization that my impulsive actions in life may cause
great consequences. Similar with Rebecca Bloomwood, also known as Becky, the protagonist who
struggles due to her shopping addiction, there were times that I buy something that I want without
m
hesitations. Although I am not diagnosed with Becky’s type of disorder, I somehow relate myself in some
er as
parts of her behavior. However, unlike Becky, I still do have self-control in purchasing new stuff no matter
co

how tempting it is to do so, especially when I do not have any money. Furthermore, I never drown in
debts. In addition, I have learned from my grandmother when she was still alive that saving money will

improve my behavior and will increase the possibility of me becoming successful in the future.

Despite having her aforementioned disorder, Becky still does have a good quality which is being
hardworking. Although she did not successfully attain her dream of working for the fashion magazine
"Alette,” she never stops until she achieves it. Unexpectedly, she found an opportunity to work as a
o
journalist and write a column called "The Girl in the Green Scarf.” Becky meets his boss, Luke Brandon

where she feels pretty good at her job but the only problem is she cannot even apply it to herself.
Because her buying behavior disturbs her eyes and influences her decision to spend money on other
things that satisfy her. She cannot help herself out of this habit where the impact of this buying addiction
adds problems to her social life. In which, I can say that we have similarities when it comes to doing a job

school, prioritizing my responsibilities in the church and even in our house, etc. with proper
management because I don’t want to a make rush or do cramming. But still, on the other side, Becky has
a problem with her excessive shopping condition which is different from me.

Based on the movie, after many trials in her condition, she learned to take control of herself

even though she described herself as a shopaholic and believed that this brings real happiness. She also
paid her debts from the debt collector who is also her ex-boyfriend, Derek Smeath by selling her green
scarf in a way of auction. This gave me new learning in life that can solve problems and troubles; achieve

freedom of mind. In spite Becky’s situation, she still proves that nothing is impossible. Relating to real-
life experiences, other people still weak and afraid to show what they can do or simply do not believe in
themselves. But for me, I always make myself believe in my abilities and skills. Because my mother
taught me, “If others can do, you can do it by yourself” and this creates a better me. This cause of my

achievements and this is the reason why I continue to work hard in pursuing my dreams and goals in my
life.
At the end of the video, Rebecca attends her best friend’s wedding, Suze. Rebecca is a
bridesmaid wearing the dress she reclaims. Suze forgives Rebecca. Afterward, Luke and Rebecca reunite
where Luke returns Rebecca’s scarf after revealing that the woman who takes the scarf in bidding was his
agent and it was all an act. As time goes by, Rebecca starts working for Luke’s new company and
continues living romantically. This ending only shows that a real friend can forgive just to stay and bind
their relationship which also related to me. Because I have a circle of friends who hold on in our
friendship through ups and downs. In terms of having a relationship with the opposite sex like Luke and
Rebecca, I have also mine. He is a man of my life who always chooses me and willingly does the best for
my sake.
The movie represents a great story that conveys values and lessons about Rebecca. It is a
recommended film for everyone especially those who suffer from compulsive buying disorder. This is

also an eye-opener to closed minded people who judge someone with mental disorder. More

stereotypes, this film greatly shows that a disorder is not a hindrance to someone’s dreams; and a sign of
rs e
a disorder does not mean that a person is not trying to battle against it everyday.
