Chapter 1

LESSON 1: Multi-Digit Multiplication

Course/Year/Section : BEED 2-B

Subject : TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN THE INTERMEDIATE GRADES
Objectives : At the end of the session, the students should be able to:
a. multiply up to 3-digit numbers by up to 2-digit numbers without or
with regrouping
b. solve word problems involving multi-digit multiplication
Date : February 13, 2021

Lesson Opener:

The Circle of Mathematicians of 123 Elementary School solicits notebooks to be donated to the
schools in the far-flung area of a certain municipality. They collected a total of 232 packs of notebooks.
If each pack contains 12 notebooks, how many notebooks did the organization collect?

Let’s Focus:

To visualize the problem, we can draw 232 packs with 12 notebooks each. But drawing these
will take us time. Instead, we can simply put this into multiplication sentence as 232 x 12 = N.

We can write the factors vertically to easily perform the operation as shown below:
232
X 12

Let us first recall the terms involved in multiplication. Factors are the numbers which we
multiply. Product is the answer which we get in multiplication.

232 factors
X 12
N ------ product

232 ------------multiplicand
X 12 ------------multiplier
N ------product

In multiplying a three-digit by a two-digit number, we follow these steps.

Step 1: Multiply the ones place of the multiplicand by the ones place of the multiplier.

X 12

Step 2: Multiply the tens place of the multiplicand by the ones place of the multiplier.

Step 3: Multiply the hundreds place of the multiplicand by the ones place of the multiplier.

232
X 12

Step 4: Multiply the ones place of the multiplicand by the tens place of the multiplier.

Step 5: Multiply the tens place of the multiplicand by the tens place of the multiplier.

Step 6: Multiply the hundreds place of the multiplicand by the tens place of the multiplier.

Step 7: Add the partial products.

+ 232

Therefore, the Circle of Mathematicians donated 2 784 notebooks.

Properties of Multiplication:

1. Commutative Property: a x b = b x a
It states that the order of the factors does not change the product, that is, it does not matter if
you multiply 5 x 2 or 2 x 5, the result will always be the same, 10.

Example: 20 x 10 = 10 x 20, the result is always 200

43 x 15 = 15 x 43, the result is always 645

cra-2-13-2021
2. Associative Property: a x b x c = a x ( b x c) = (a x b) x c
It states that, in a series of consecutive multiplication, the order in which their factors are
multiplied makes no difference. So, to multiply 3 x 2 x 5 would be the same as solving 3 x ( 2 x 5), it will
always result to 30.

Example: 7 x 6 x 10 = 7x (6 x 10) = (7 x 6) x 10, the result is always 420.

11 x 2 x 3 = 2 x ( 3 x 11) = 3 x (2 x 11), the result is always 66.

3. Distributive Property: a x (b + c) = a x b + a x c
It states that multiply a number by a sum or subtraction is the same as multiplying that number
by adding or subtracting and adding or subtracting that results.

Example: 4 x (3 + 2) = 4 x 3 + 4 x 2, the result is 20.

4 x ( 3 – 2)= 4 x 3 – 4 x 2, the result is 4.

Different Effective Strategies in Teaching Multi-Digit Multiplication

1. Using Properties of Multiplication
2. Multiply by 10, 100, and 1000.
3. Using the Box/ Window Method
4. Partial Products
5. Lattice Method
6. Using Factors/Long Method

Lattice Method: Example: 232 x 12

Step 1: Prepare.

2 3 2

Step 2: Multiply

2 3 2
0 0 0
2 3 2 1
0 0 0
4 6 4 2

2 3 2
0 0 0
2 3 2 1
0 0 0
2 4 6 4 2

7 8 4

Using the Lattice Method, the product is 2 784.

Applying the Distributive Property of Multiplication over Addition:

Example: 232 x 12 = N

12 can be renamed as 10 + 2
So, our new equation is 232 x ( 10 + 2) = N

Working the equation, we get the results as follows:

232 x (10 + 2 ) = n
232 x 10 + 232 x 2
2320 + 464 = 2, 784

Using the Box/ Window Method:

Example: 232 x 12

10 2
2000 400
200

300 60 30

20 4 2

Add:
2,000 + 400 + 300 + 60 + 20 + 4 = 2 784
