STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I am glad to introduce myself as Aman Tiwari, a prospective student from Chemical

Engineering stream, aspiring to pursue my Master’s in Canada. I, hereby submit my study
permit application as I have been accepted to undertake M.Eng in Chemical Engineering at
University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada for the January 2019 intake.
Motivation for Master in Chemical Engineering
As it is often said the journey of exploring the realm of knowledge and probing into the
unknown is infinite and strenuous. However, to me the desire to fulfil ambitions and joy
from discoveries prevailed over any sense of hardship. Thus, I found that Chemical
Engineering is the branch that truly interests me and I decided to join Chemical
engineering at Thapar institute of Technology, Patiala.
During my undergraduate study, I had opportunities to interact with brilliant professors
who have contributed exceedingly to scientific literature and this instilled a passion in me
to delve into and solve challenging problems by means of novelty. In my sophomore year, I
developed a great interest in subject viz. Material and Energy balance, heat transfer,
Thermodynamics, Environmental Studies, exposure to labs on varied Chemical engineering
aspects strengthened this interest. To get a firsthand experience, I undertook a six weeks
industrial training at United Breweries Limited, Ludhiana. This training had benefitted
me eminently as I was made acquainted with the whole operation line from bottle washing
section to fresh beer packaging section, I was capable to correlate this with all the evident
theoretical knowledge I had accrued.
As a part of our curriculum, additionally I have worked on a capstone project on
‘Production of Monochlorobenzene from Benzene and Chlorine’, which rendered an
equitable sense about plant economics and designing of equipment such as reactor,
distillation column etc. To further intensify my knowledge, I undertook a research project
at CSIR: Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), Dehradun, India, under the guidance of Dr.
Anshu Nanoti, Senior principal scientist, Absorption and Membrane separation division,
IIP. The prime objective of the project was ‘Propane/Propylene separation using
adsorptive methods’. We procured an appreciable product recovery and purity can be
attained through PSA which reduces the cost and energy demand required in separation
process.

Furthermore, I had an opportunity to experience industrial working environment when I

was selected by ‘Reliance Industries Limited’ – a Fortune 500 company, appointed as a
Shift Manager in a Gas cracker plant, Nagothane, Maharashtra, I am designated as a panel
officer handling the production of ethylene and propylene which involves a constant check
on all the process parameters, administering startup and shutdown, work permit
management and safe operation.
Research and Industrial experience had exigently given me carte blanche to traverse more
in the field of research and made me keen to pursue advance research in field of Energy
and Risk management, Corrosion Inhibition, Industrial Pollution Abatement and
Environmental Studies.
