Steel Design: Problems & Applications

A steel design task document provides instructions and problems to solve regarding steel structures. Problem 1 involves determining the maximum tensile stress and normal strain in a suspended W8x67 beam. Problem 2 involves calculating the change in length and force in a member given its strain. Students are instructed to solve additional problems from the textbook and to evaluate three lateral force resisting methods for seismic loads by outlining the advantages and disadvantages of each.

STEEL DESIGN TASK 1: INTRODUCTION AND DESIGN CONCEPT

PART 1: INDIVIDUAL PROBLEM

Instructions:
1. Solve the following problems.
2. Summarize your answers.
3. Show complete solution.
4. Submit calculation in pdf format.
5. Do not write calculation of two problems on 1 face of a paper.
PROBLEM 1: A 20-foot-long W8x67 is suspended from one end. If the modulus of elasticity is
29,000 ksi, determine the following. Note: Use the ASEP steel handbook for the wide flange
properties.
 What is the maximum tensile stress?
 What is the maximum normal strain?
PROBLEM 2: The strain in member AB was measured to be 8.9x10–4. If the member is an L 3
×21⁄2 × 1⁄4 of A36 steel, determine the following. (Use the internet to determine the property of
the member and research what is an A36 steel.)
a. What is the change in length in inches?
b. What is the force in the member?
PART 2: PROBLEM SET
Instructions:
1. Solve the following problems.
2. Summarize your answers.
3. Show complete solution.
4. Submit calculation in pdf format.
5. Do not write calculation of two problems on 1 face of a paper.
SOLVE PROBLEM EXERCISE OF CHAPTER 2 FROM OUR TEXTBOOK.
PART 3: PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Instructions:
1. Answer the following questions technically.
Given: A building to be designed to resist seismic loads and three different lateral force resisting
methods are to be evaluated.

Find:
 Three possible methods that may be used
 The advantages of each method
 The disadvantages of each method
