Lesson 2 Polynomial Functions

The document discusses polynomial functions. It defines a polynomial function as a function of the form f(x) = a0xn + a1xn-1 + ... + an, where a0 ≠ 0, n is a non-negative integer, and the ai coefficients are complex numbers. It states that the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra guarantees every polynomial function has at least one root. The document provides several theorems about the relationship between the degree of a polynomial and the number of roots it has. It gives an example of finding the roots of a polynomial function and provides practice problems for students to solve.

Lesson 2
Polynomial Functions

Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. Recognize a polynomial function
2. Recall the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra and other results on the roots of
polynomial functions
3. Understand the importance of finding the roots of a polynomial function

Polynomial Functions

A function defined by f(x) = aoxn + a1xn-1+…+an, where a0≠0, n is a non negative integer and ai (i = 0,
1, ...,n) are fixed complex numbers is called a polynomial of degree n in x. Then numbers a0, a1, …, an
are called the coefficients.

If α is a complex number such that f(α)= 0, then α is called zero of the polynomial.

Activity 2
Polynomial Functions

Answer the following problems.

1. Find a polynomial equation of the lowest degree with rational coefficients having √3 and
1 – 2i as two of its roots.
2. Solve 4x5 + x3 + x2 – 3x + 1 = 0, given that it has rational roots.
3. Solve x3 – x2 – 8x + 12 = 0, given that has a double root.
