AC30 Technical Description - Rev03

The AC30 is an intelligent magnetic pulser designed to generate reliable pulses for electronic calculators. It uses 3 Hall effect sensors and an embedded microprocessor to analyze signals from the sensors and filter out pulses caused by vibrations or oscillations. The AC30 outputs accurate volume pulses on two channels by processing signals from the 3 sensors. It is approved for use in explosive environments and operates between -25°C and +55°C.

AC30

Electronic Pulses Transmitter

Technical Description

Revision 03.02

02/12/2015

Author: Pierre Jacoviac

1. Introduction
1.1. Purpose

The AC30 is a new generation of SATAM. It is an “intelligent” magnetic pulser, design to be

associated the whole SATAM calculator range including EQUALIS S, EQUALIS MPC or any other
compatible electronic controller.

1.2. Presentation

The AC30 magnetic pulser is designed to generate fully reliable pulses to delivery calculators. For that,
an intelligent processing of the sensors signals is used to filter pulses due to vibrations or oscillations,
and to send error message to the calculator in case of failure.

Basically the AC30 is a 3 channels pulser generating a 2 channel output signal. The third channel is used
by the internal process of the pulser in order to discriminate all vibration and parasite signals on the 2
main channels, in order to deliver to the calculator accurate pulses representing the actual volume
delivered.

This principle and technology is patented and already used for 10 years on all SATAM equipments.

It is based on a rotating wheel having magnetic sectors read by 3 Hall Effect sensors. These 3 signals are
permanently analyzed and processed by an embedded Microprocessor.

2. System Description
- Voltage input : 5V +/- 5% (SI spec see ATEX certificate)

- Current : 15 mA

- Voltage output : 0 – 5 V

- Impedance 10 kΩ Pull up.

Pulses characteristics: 20 pulses / tour which means for a ZC17/80 meter >> 20 impulsions = 2.27
liters

2.2. Magnetic Wheel

The rotating part used to generate pulses is a magnetic wheel having successive North and South
poles sectors (40 sectors per revolution).

One wheel revolution generates 20 pulses on each output channel.

2.3. Hall Effect Sensors

Three Hall Effect sensors are used to detect the successive poles. Their respective positions are
defined to ensure correct signal generation and to control any transitory effect.

The sensor's output turns high with a north pole and turns low with a south pole.

Sensors A and B generates the two main channels, giving the volume pulses and the rotation
direction of the disc.

Sensor C is used for detecting whether sensor A or B are defective, and for distinguishing vibrations.

2.4. Metrology approval

The AC30 has passed all tests requested by MID, OIML R117-1 and GOSTANDAR

2.5. Explosive environment :

The AC30 pulser has been developed and Approved in accordance with intrinsic safety conformity
(EN50020).

AC30 Technical Description_rev03.docx Page 4 of 13

2.6. Operating temperature:

The operating temperature for the AC30 pulser is -25° to +55°C.

3. Internal Process description

3.1. Main functions

The embedded software of AC30 has the following functions:

- Verification and transmission of the pulses from the sensors SA and SB to the channel A
and channel B outputs during a normal process

- Detection of a sensor failure

- Suppression of the pulses due to vibrations or oscillation

- Checking of the output level

- Permanent verification is own process : Watchdog

3.2. Guaranty on Reliability of Pulses

Sensor inputs SA and SB are continuously read at very high frequency.

Each new state of sensor SA and Sensor SB are checked 3 times before being considered as valid and
being treated by the processing software.

3.3. Elimination of pulses due to small oscillation

If a backward rotation occurs, the software is waiting for 2 complete pulses before transmitting the
pulses to the outputs. When the backward rotation is finished and a forward rotation restarts, the
software is waiting for 2 complete to transmit pulses again.

3.4. Detection of a sensor failure

At each new state of sensor SA and SB, the coherence between sensor A, B and C is checked.

If this coherence is not validated, then an error is send to our calculator through the “Pulser
present” output and the delivery is stopped or unauthorized.

AC30 Technical Description_rev03.docx Page 5 of 13

3.5. Elimination wrong pulses due to vibrations

Wrong pulses due to vibration are eliminated in the same way as described in 3.3.

But to distinguish vibration from a defect on sensor SA or SB, we check the coherence of signals with
sensor SC.

For vibration, no pulses are sent to the calculator.

For a defect sensor SA or SB, the "Pulser Present" output indicate an error to the calculator which
stops the delivery.

3.6. Checking of the output level

Each time the software changes the outputs level, this level is read. If there is no correspondence
between the outputs level and the software state, the "Pulser Present" output is set high to indicate
an error.

This test allows detection of defective output and short-circuits.

3.7. Permanent verification is own process: Watchdog

The good running of AC30 process is checked every second, to prevent from any micro-controller
failure. In case of problem the "Pulser Present" output is set to stop or forbid any delivery.
