Statics 213 Module 3.3 Resultant of Concurrent Forces in SPace HCC

The document provides the steps to calculate the resultant force of three concurrent forces acting in space. It first calculates the components of each force along the x, y, and z axes. It then sums the components to find the x, y, and z components of the resultant force. Using these, it calculates the magnitude and direction of the resultant force. The final section is worked example determining tensions in cables AC and AD such that the overall resultant is vertical, setting up equations for the sums of forces along the x and y axes to solve for the unknown tensions.

MODULE 3.3
➢ Resultant of Concurrent Forces in Space

Rx = ΣFx ; Ry = ΣFy ; Rz = ΣFz

R2 = Rx2 + Ry2 + Rz2

Where:
R = resultant of the force system
Rx = algebraic sum of all forces along x - axis
Ry = algebraic sum of all forces along y - axis
Rz = algebraic sum of all forces along z - axis
• Determine the magnitude of the resultant and the angles θx,
θy and θz which defines the direction of the resultant.
F1 = 20N (4, 5, -3)
F2 = 40N (-6, 4, -5)
F3 = 30N (4, -2, -3)

• Note: the distances (dx, dy and dz) of each force are already
given.
• Solution

• Step 1: Solve for the diagonal “d” of each force.
