1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 ORIGIN
The word modular has been used this way since the 1930s — earlier,
it was a purely mathematical term, from the Latin word modulus, or "small measure."
Modular (adj.) 1798, as a term in mathematics, "pertaining to modulation," from
French modulaire or directly from Modern Latin modularis, from Latin modulus "a
small measure," diminutive of modus "measure, manner" (from PIE root *med- "take
appropriate measures").
1.2 DEFINITIONS
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary, modular means -of, relating
to, or based on a module or a modulus. Modular learning arranges information in a
way that presents points in an intelligent way, and it can be individualized according
to learners' needs. Traditional course frameworks generally present information
sequentially, and the perception by the learner is one of monotony. Taneja (1989)
defined module as a unit of work in a course of instruction that is virtually self-
contained and a method of teaching that is based on the concept of building up skills
and knowledge in discrete. A module is a set of learning opportunities organized
around a well - defined topic which contains the elements of ordinate dictation,
categorical objectives, edifying cognition activities, and evaluation utilizing
criterion. Modular learning is a form of distance learning that uses Self-
Learning Modules (SLM) based on the most essential learning competencies
(MELCS) provided by the Department of Education. The modules include sections
on motivation and assessment that serve as a complete guide of both teachers' and
students' desired competencies.
1.3 BEHAVIOURAL, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFECTS OF
MODULAR LEARNING TO THE STUDENTS OF ST. MATTHEW THE
EVANGELIST
Mental effects of modular learning include stress, anxiety and depression,
which can result in a breakdown between mind, behaviour and emotions. That can
result to more serious disorders that are difficult to recover from. Physical and
behavioural effects has so much in common like insomnia, laziness (procrastination),
eating disorder and other illnesses that can lead to more serious ailment.
2.0 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
2.1 RESPONDENTS AND LOCALE
The respondents of this survey are the Sacred Heart Academy- Grade 10
St, Matthew the Evangelist students through online, video call, chats and etc.
The students were not forced to use the English language for they aren’t
comfortable with it. All the questions were related to the title.
2.2 METHOD AND DATA ANALYSIS
The method to be used in gathering information would be short
questionnaires with follow-up questions. The gathered data would be tallied
and analyzed for accurate results for this research. The data includes some
informations about the audience’s opinion, but will only used for this
research.
2.2.1 SURVEY AND QUESTIONNAIRE
The questionnaire would only consist of 5 multiple choices and 3 free
response questions with follow-ups. The survey questioned a number of more
than 30 students and asked about their perspective on this kind of learning
system and what changes on their life because of modular learning. They are
divided into 6 groups with a leader as the interviewer. Some items have more
replies from the respondent since there are many possible effects, both positive
and negative, of modules.
3.0 EFFECTS OF MODULAR LEARNING TO THE STUDENT OF ST.
MATTHEW THE EVANGELIST
The survey shows the effects of modular learning towards the students of
St. Matthew the Evangelist. Top effects include both stress and anxiety.
Students get stressed and having anxiety because of today’s new
way of getting educated. Modular learning affects the students’ health and
mental problems. For them, modular learning is more stressful and tiring
and it shows that many of them experienced a lot of effects in this new
way of getting educated. The more students having hard time, the more
they can’t focus in their studying. Table No. 1 shows the answers of
the interviewees about how modular learning affects them.

4.0 CONCLUSION
After a short survey, one can conclude that students of St. Matthew the
Evangelist are having a hard time of adapting and adjusting the modular learning.
Some students are already having a hard time in understanding the lessons in face-to-
face classes and it doubles now that we’re in this set-up, the modular learning. A lot
of adjustments are needed to the students in using the modular learning. Also,
students will easily be distracted due to the presence of social media and mobile
games. Many challenges are faced by the students in today’s way of education.
Adapting in the new way of learning is hard, but learning to adapt it takes time.
Challenges may make us stronger but it is still the reason why we are struggling.
